Masculinity, Violence and Aggression
Element 03 for this week asks you to read three articles the examine different instances of arguably masculinized aggression:
- “The Boys are Not All Right,” which asks what the mass shooter crisis in America says about masculinity,
- “Saint Elliot Roger and the Incels who Canonize Him,” which looks at masculine entitlement over women’s bodies, and
- “Under the Skin: Why that ‘Arrested Development’ Interview is So Bad,” which examines masculinized aggression in a very different context than the prior two articles but which may round out our understanding of masculinized aggression by examining the everyday interaction rather than just viewing the extreme cases presented in the first two articles.
For this discussion post, please reflect on the three articles and discuss your reaction to the content. If you need a more direct prompt, you might think about – but certainly don’t have to restrict yourself to – the question: is there a problem with masculinity in America?
