My Leadership SMART Goal:

Guidelines

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to develop a SMART-formatted goal related to your professional leadership applicable to your current practice setting or future leadership aspirations. This goal is about YOUR leadership development, not those of the organization or the department where you work. Many organizations have developed the SMART-goal framework as they strive for performance improvement. Your goal may tie to one of the departmental or organizational SMART goals but the components of the goal are about YOUR leadership development The Institute of Medicine’s quality initiative has identified five core healthcare profession competencies. This assignment focuses on only two of those initiatives. Either Patient-Centered Care or Working in Interdisciplinary and/or Interprofessional Teams will serve as a framework for identification of YOUR leadership SMART goal.

Course Outcomes

Completion of this assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes.

CO 1: Apply leadership concepts, skills, and decision making in the provision of high quality nursing care, healthcare team management, and the oversight and accountability for care delivery in a variety of settings. (PO #2)

CO 4: Apply concepts of leadership and team coordination to promote the achievement of safe and quality outcomes of care for diverse populations. (PO #4)

CO 5: Apply improvement methods, based on data from the outcomes of care processes, to design and test changes to continuously improve the quality and safety of healthcare. (PO #8)

CO 8: Apply concepts of quality and safety using structure, process, and outcome measures to identify clinical questions as the beginning process of changing current practice. (PO #8)

Due Dates

This assignment consists of the completion of the My Leadership SMART Goal paper. Submit assignment to the Dropbox by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT, by the end of Week 4.

Points

This assignment is worth 200 points.

Directions

Review the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) core healthcare competencies. Select ONE of the competencies that you will work on for developing a Leadership SMART Goal. You are to select one of the following competencies for YOUR SMART goal.

Managing Patient-Centered Care or

Working in interdisciplinary and/or interprofessional teams;

1. Create ONE leadership goal that is in the SMART goal format. You practiced this in the Week 3 Discussion, and received valuable feedback from your instructor and peers. Please refer to this as you work on the assignment.

S – Specific (Who besides YOU is involved in the goal, what is YOUR goal, where will it take place?)

M – Measurable (How are YOU going to achieve the goal?) Be specific with measureable outcomes.

A – Attainable (What resources and/or experts are available to assist YOU with attaining YOUR goal?)

R – Realistic (Is YOUR goal something that is realistically obtainable in YOUR professional practice?) Be specific.

T – Time bound (What specific dates or weeks will YOU accomplish each task related to your leadership goal?)

· Example NOT in SMART format: I will learn how to be a manager. This goal is lofty, not measurable, and unattainable in the time allotted, probably not realistic, and not time bound.

· Example in SMART Format: I will learn the disciplinary process of an employee who has excessive absences, by locating the organization’s attendance policy and meeting with the unit manager, reviewing peer-reviewed articles and credible websites to obtain information on the disciplinary process by Week 4 (or specified date).

Note: This particular example relates to Core Competency: Managing Patient-Centered Care.

This example is a SMART goal that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound.

S-Specific

· Who– Your name, or “I” Indicate others who may be involved.

· What– Learn the disciplinary process of employees who have excessive absences

· Where– Your organization

M-Measurable

· How: Through locating the organization’s attendance policy and passing a quiz on the content of the policy.

A-Attainable

· Resources and/or Expert: Meeting with the unit manager, reviewing peer-reviewed articles, and credible websites

R-Realistic

· Realistically obtainable: Access to the organization, policies, and unit manager. Various resources are available.

T-Time bound

· Specific dates: By Week 4 (or specific date)

2. Go to the Chamberlain library (http://library.chamberlain.edu) and search the databases (under Menu tab) to locate scholarly articles related to your SMART goal. Also, search for credible websites to gain insight into how to accomplish your goal.

3. Construct a plan of action to reach My Leadership SMART goal. Be specific by creating a timeline of when you plan on doing each action; explain how, when, and where you plan to communicate with an expert; and identify specific resources you will use to help you achieve your goal.

a. Example Plan of Action for above mentioned example:

· Seek approval to review the organization’s policies and schedule a meeting/interview with the unit manager by _____ (fill in date).

· Review the policies on disciplinary action by _____ (fill in date).

· Review the American Nurses Association website and peer-reviewed articles in the American Journal of Nursing and Journal of Advanced Nursing by _____ (fill in date).

· Evaluate the findings from the above resources by _____ (fill in date). Pass the quiz.

4. Write a scholarly paper that follows APA formatting guidelines. Organize your content logically and express your thoughts clearly. Use appropriate headers to separate sections of your paper. Check for any grammar or spelling errors before submission.

5. Submit your completed NR 447 My Leadership SMART Goal paper, which should be approximately six pages (excluding title page and references) to the Week 4 My Leadership SMART Goal Paper Dropbox by Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT at the end of Week 4. Note: This assignment is automatically submitted to Turn It In.

Final Research Paper

In the Final Research Paper, you will examine your own culture from an etic (outsider’s) perspective and another culture from an emic (insider’s) perspective to demonstrate your understanding of cultural relativism and examine misconceptions and ethnocentric beliefs concerning each of these cultures. In doing so, you will demonstrate a culturally relativistic perspective, in order to understand why different groups of people do what they do, without expressing a positive or negative opinion of their cultural practices. Keep the distinction between cultural relativism and moral relativism in mind as you write your final paper. Even if you do not personally agree with a cultural practice, demonstrate your understanding of the practice in its cultural context. Avoid opinionated or judgmental language in your paper.

Your Final Research Paper will consist of two main parts, framed by an Introduction and a Conclusion. See the flow chart for a quick overview of the assignment.

Introduction

Begin with an introductory paragraph that has a thesis statement at the end. The introduction should set up your topic, giving a preview and summary of the analysis you will present in the body of the paper. The thesis statement is the last sentence or two of the introduction and states what the main point structuring your paper will be.

Here is an example of an Introduction.

Part I

Using the Miner (1956) article and the feedback you received from your instructor on your “Summarize Your Sources for the Final Research Paper” assignment in Week Three as a guide, describe one aspect of your own culture from an etic perspective. See the appropriate sections in the textbook, based on your chosen topic from Week Three, for information on how to approach your paper from an anthropological perspective. You can describe American culture in general, as Miner does, or you can describe an American subculture, such as a specific geographical group (e.g., New Yorkers), a particular ethnicity (e.g., African Americans), or an age-related category of Americans (e.g., millennials).

Use reputable statistics and/or scholarly research to support any factual statements. Do not rely solely on personal experience or opinion. Here is an example of how to properly support your statements.

Potential sources you can use to support your analysis are listed below. You can also conduct your own research to find other sources.

Important: see additional instructions in Part I under Final Paper Requirements.

Here is an example of Part I.

Part II

Refer to the article you chose for Part II of the “Summarize Your Sources for the Final Research Paper” assignment in Week Three and describe an aspect of another culture from an emic (insider’s) perspective. You do not have to do research beyond reading your chosen article; however, if you do choose to conduct additional research make sure to use reputable statistics and/or scholarly sources to support any factual statements. Do not rely solely upon personal experience or opinion.

Important: see additional instructions in Part II under Final Paper Requirements.

Here is an example of Part II.

Conclusion

End with a concluding paragraph that reinforces your thesis. Summarize and tie together your main points for the reader. Provide a brief self-reflexive analysis of what you learned while writing this paper.

Important: see additional instructions in Conclusion under Final Paper Requirements.

Here is an example of a Conclusion.

Cultural relativism

Cultural relativismis the idea that the beliefs and practices of a culture should be understood within the context of that particular culture’s background, history, and current events surrounding it. We should not ethnocentrically impose our own beliefs and opinions, which are products of our own enculturation

Cultural relativism is not the same as moral relativism, however. As Crapo (2013) notes:

“We need not, for instance, come to value infanticide in order to understand the roles it may play in peoples’ lives in a society where it is customary. What cultural relativism requires of us is simply that we do not confuse our own feelings about such a custom with understanding it. To do the latter, we must investigate the meanings the custom has for those who practice it and the functions it may fulfill in their society.”(section 1.4, “Cultural Differences: Cultural Relativism,” para. 3)

Sociology Essay , I Have Instructions In Black And Also A HELP ESSAY In Red That The Professor Gaved Us. Please Read Them Well Before U Start

So often, influential people make claims about the way things are (or should be) based on their own ideological beliefs and not on actual facts.  This essay is all about finding and interpreting real data to “fact-check” such statements and learn the real truth, not what others want you to believe.  For this exercise, you’ll compare talk and reality around some aspect of work and money in America; then once you know the truth, you’ll apply some sociological theory to go beyond the headlines and really explain what’s happening.

  1. A quote describing the American economy, American workers, or work in America. Your quote must fit all of these guidelines:
    • Printed by a legitimate news source (major newspaper, magazine, news website) within the last 5 years or so.
    • Spoken by a prominent “opinion leader” (someone many people listen to, like a politician, reporter, religious leader, famous businessperson, etc.).
    • Makes a claim about something real that you can fact-check with a statistic (NOT a feeling, dream, thoughts on God or human nature, etc…)
  1. A statistic printed by a legitimate source (news, academic articles/books, government report, etc.) or pulled from a database (like the World Bank, US Bureau of Labor Statistics, US Census, etc.) that clearly relates to your quote.
  2. Explain whether your statistic either proves or disproves what the quote said. (If neither, you need a new statistic, or quote, or both!)
  3. Now that you know the truth, pick at least one major sociological theory (functionalism, conflict theory, interactionism) and use it to explain the meaning of your statistic.
  4. An in-text citation following your quote and your statistic, and a separate “references page” detailing the sources of your quote and statistic.
    • Use any format you’re comfortable with—APA, MLA, ASA…just be consistent.
    • Your references page does not count toward the 2-3 page recommended length for this essay.

Citations and references are important.  Small errors in format make you look unprofessional, and will cost you a few points.  Major errors may make it impossible for me to track down your sources myself, so your quote and/or statistic may not count (how do I know you didn’t make them up?), which will cost you way more points.  And complete lack of quotation marks, citations, and references means you’re plagiarizing, which will get you a zero for the assignment.

Try to give equal attention to explaining the quote, comparing it to the statistic, and your sociological analysis at the end.  Each task should get about the same amount of space in this essay.

The Focus Of This Paper Is To Explore How Residential Patterns Affect Intergroup Relations. You Will

The focus of this paper is to explore how residential patterns affect intergroup relations. You will use research approaches such as observation and secondary data analysis to further understand your community. You will need to choose whether you will research your city, county, or state. Be sure to choose a large enough geographic area to perform meaningful analysis. For example, if you live in Hawaii, you may want to research your state. If you live in a small town, you may want to research your county. If you live in Atlanta or another big city, researching at the city level should be fine.

Step 1: Using Secondary Data
Use the data gathered on your chosen locality in the Week Three assignment, “Demographic Report,” . If more data is needed, use demographic data from the latest census (available online using the US Census American FactFinder) and identify the various social and economic characteristics (i.e., education, population, housing, race, class, etc.) of this locale. You can also check government websites for your state, county or city for data. Present your findings in two to three pages of the paper.

Step 2: Using an Observational Study
Taking the information you have gathered in Step 1 regarding social and economic characteristics, and take 30 to 60 minutes observing your community or use a newspaper if you’re unable to physically go to your community. Take notes of what you observe. Compare this data to what was found in the census data and make note if there are differences. Present your findings in one to two pages of the paper.

Step 3: Analysis and Reporting of Research
Analyze your data and present your responses in two to three pages in the paper:

  • Describe how segregated the neighborhoods are in your locality. Be sure to consider the various social inequality indicators: race, ethnicity, class, gender, and perhaps sexuality for some areas.
  • Indicate if there are policies, practices, or specific circumstances that have created and maintained these patterns.

Here are some examples of aspects to consider: Historically, has there always been racial segregation or not? Was it traditionally an area of immigration from a certain ethnic region? Is there an LGBT community? Was it an industrial area that had a strong working class community, or is it a technology area with highly educated citizens? Have there been efforts to desegregate or plans in the future?

  • In Chapter 1 and throughout the text, you have explored several sociological theoretical perspectives. Indicate which theoretical perspective best presents your analysis of your locality. Describe why you have chosen this theoretical perspective and ensure you include detail on which theorist’s work is most representative.

The Research Paper:

  • Must be seven to nine double-spaced pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.
  • Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
  • Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
  • Must use at least five scholarly resources, including a minimum of two from the Ashford University Library.
  • Must document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate reference page
