Reducing Intergroup Conflict

Reducing Intergroup Conflict

(Reducing Intergroup Conflict)

Research suggests a number of strategies to reduce intergroup conflict. To further explore these strategies, in addition to readings in your text, read the following article paying particular attention to pages 588 to 593. Hewstone, M., Rubin, M., & Willis, H. (2002). Intergroup bias. Annual Review of Psychology, 53, 575-604.

You are a counselor in a detention center for delinquent adolescent boys. Your current project is to devise a way to reduce intergroup conflict that has been escalating between the boys at the center, many of whom were active in local gangs.

    • Discuss in detail the concepts that lead to the intergroup conflict, such as stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. How have these attitudes and behaviors created and perpetuated the ongoing conflict?

    • Discuss the different strategies to reduce intergroup conflict found in your text and the Hewstone article.

    • Looking back at the course discuss 2 to 3 additional concepts that could be applied in helping a person overcome these negative attitudes and behaviors.

  • Keeping these strategies and concepts in mind, what activities and/or programs can you create that will help these boys overcome this conflict and learn to work together, respect each other, and come to see each other’s differences as valuable. Briefly summarize each program/strategy in 2 to 3 sentences each in preparation for part 2 of this project.

Answer the above points in a 3- to 4-page paper. Your paper should be double-spaced, typed in 12-point Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.

(Reducing Intergroup Conflict)

Part 2:

Create a 4- to 8-slide PowerPoint presentation (not including title and reference slides) to present to the board of directors for the detention center that will cover the following:

    • A detailed outline of each of the 3 to 4 programs/strategies that you would like to put into place at the center.

  • Discuss for each program/strategy why you believe it will be effective within the context of your detention center.

By Saturday, May 3, 2014 deliver your assignment to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox.

Case Studies For Doctoral Learners

Case Studies For Doctoral Learners

(Case Studies For Doctoral Learners)

According to General Colin Powell, “Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers who can cut through argument, debate, and doubt to offer a solution everybody can understand” (as cited by Harari, 2002).

Assignment Preparation

For this assignment, imagine that you are the manager of a health care organization confronting numerous issues potentially affecting the provision of safe, high-quality health care practices. You have decided to focus first on the issue that has particular relevance to your area of specialization or professional goals, or that presents a situation you might expect to encounter in your leadership role. As you consider an appropriate course of action to address this issue, you have decided to begin by searching the case study literature with the intention of possibly gaining insight into the actions of other health care leaders who have dealt with similar issues and may have provided a sound solution to the problem or issues he or she faced.

A colleague with whom you have spoken about this has recommended the Buchbinder, Shanks, and Buchbinder text, Cases in Health Care Management as an excellent case study reference.

For your convenience, Appendix B lists all cases by topic (Leadership; Quality/Patient Safety; Finance; Healthcare Professionals/Human Resources; Health Disparities/Cultural Competence; Ethics/Law/Conflict of Interest; Crossing the Line/Fraud) and by primary and secondary settings.

In the Buchbinder, Shanks, and Buchbinder text, locate two case studies that are most closely aligned with the issue(s) you have decided to address. In addition, be sure that your selected case studies will enable you to

· Evaluate the effectiveness of different leadership approaches in facilitating collaborative professional relationships across disciplines.

· Evaluate health care leaders’ ability to communicate effectively.

· Analyze the role of communication in both creating and resolving a problem in health care leadership.

· Evaluate how effectively leaders address any issues involving ethical practice, diversity or inclusion.

· Evaluate health care leaders’ ability to manage and prioritize leadership responsibilities to resolve issues.

Note: The case studies in the text may not supply all of the information you may need. In such cases, you should consider a variety of possibilities and infer plausible conclusions.(Case Studies For Doctoral Learners)

Assignment Instructions

Complete the following steps:

1. Include a title page, abstract, and reference page.

o An APA Style Paper Tutorial [DOCX] and the associated APA Style Paper Template [DOCX] are linked in Resources to help you in writing and formatting your paper. Format your work per these documents.

2. Include on your cover page the titles of the case studies you have chosen. For example, your title could read: “Demonstrating Effective Leadership: Case 82 – When Yes Means No and Case 83 – Emergency Divert Status.”

o Include the case study in your references and use in-text citations when appropriate.

3. In the body of the paper, begin by briefly summarizing the facts surrounding the case studies. After you identify who the leaders are and the issues they are faced with, analyze the factors that you believe contributed to each issue.

o Note: In graduate level writing, you should minimize the use of direct quotes. Lengthy quotes do not count toward assignment minimums. It is your interpretation of the material and its application to practice that is assessed.

o Remember, the case studies may not supply all of the information you may need. In such cases, you should consider a variety of possibilities and infer plausible conclusions. However, please be sure to identify any speculations that you make as such.

o An excellent tool for analyzing factors that contribute to a problem is the Fishbone Diagram, linked in the Resources. Use of this tool is highly recommended, but it is optional, and you will not hand in your diagram with this assignment.

4. Compare and contrast the leadership approaches or styles these leaders use. Analyze how the approaches or styles make these leaders more or less effective in building interprofessional relationships across disciplines within the organization. Based on your analysis, determine how likely it will be that these leaders will be able to build and maintain such relationships with other communities and leaders outside their organization. Support your analysis with citations and appropriate APA references to peer-reviewed journals or scholarly sources.

5. Analyze how well these leaders communicate, verbally or in writing. Analyze the role of communication and communication strategies in both creating and resolving the issues presented in the case study.

6. Summarize and analyze how well the leaders managed professional responsibilities and priorities to resolve the issue in the case. What lessons could you take away from this case that could be applied by other leaders?

7. Summarize and evaluate how effectively the leaders addressed any issues involving ethical practice, diversity or inclusion in the case. What key lessons do these cases provide for leaders? Use examples to clarify and support your ideas.(Case Studies For Doctoral Learners)

Submission Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

· Written communication: Write coherently to support central ideas, in appropriate format, and with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.

· Length of paper: 5–6 typed, double-spaced pages, not including the title page, abstract, and reference page.

· References: At least four different resources (peer-reviewed journals or other scholarly resource, assigned unit readings, and the like).

· APA formatting:

o Include a properly formatted title page, abstract, and reference page.

o An APA Style Paper Tutorial [DOCX] and the associated APA Style Paper Template [DOCX] are linked in Resources to help you in writing and formatting your paper. Format your work per these documents.

o Apply correct formatting to all in-text citations and references.

· Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

1-I like these questions!  Our hospital does have drills but we have not had an “active shooter” drill yet.  We talk about it within our department but not as an entire hospital yet.  They have set up emergency response communication via  text messaging and they have used that a few times but not for anything catastrophic.  The topic makes me sick and sad as this is becoming our reality and that this is becoming a part of life.

I did perform CPR on a Grandfather who was attending “”Disney on Ice” at our huge arena.  It was a snowy night and I got there early.  I was on the level above when I saw him go down and heard the screams from family.  Not many people there yet.  By the time I had gotten down to the level where he was seemed like an eternity.  He was pulse less and blue.  I did do CPR and continued until EMS arrived.  He did die at the hospital and I later found out if was from a pulmonary embolism.  The family was very thankful and obviously devastated.

I have been called several times from the stands at my girls sporting events to help with injuries or emergnecies as most of us as nurses have been.

2-enjoyed reading your post and also feel like the tertiary prevention phase is very important in the recovery phase. This is the phase that will help individuals long term . The aftermath of the 2010 Haitian earthquake was devastating it is at this phase focus can be put on prevention measures such s counseling, chronic disease rehabilitation, services for housing and any type long term maintenance.

3-I can definitely identify with compassion fatigue. I am a mental health nurse and each night I clock in I have the privilege of being a listening ear for someone who feels that life is hopeless. Sometimes I am able to lift spirits sometime not. What I try to do is take my time away so regardless of how much they call me stating staffing is low I don’t come in. During that time off I go  do to the gym, spend time with my family and most importantly worship,  pray and praise my Lord.

Fica response

Ethical issues about an individual’s ability to obtain appropriate access to health care services (Access to healthcare in the U. S., n.d). This inequality and often unethical inconsistency in access are primarily due to a lack of universal medical insurance. Unlike European and other industrialized countries, the United States does not have universal health care coverage. As a result, almost forty-four million Americans lacked health insurance coverage during 2002 (Trotochaud, 2006).

Although there have been significant declines in the number of uninsured since 2002, mostly due to because of the Affordable Care Act, presently millions remain without affordable coverage. Among the majority of the remaining uninsured are poor adults in states that either chose not to expand Medicaid or undocumented immigrants who do not qualify for Medicaid or Marketplace coverage. I believe that healthcare should be a right, not a privilege (Vasques, 2017). According to the US Census Bureau, there are some factors that negatively impact an individual’s ability to access health care coverage. These factors are race, age, gender, education, and employment status. Research showed that people who have health insurance in this country have better access to healthcare and better healthcare outcomes than does who do not. However, this does not mean that all individuals with health insurance received “equal treatment.” People who receive Medicaid often complained that private providers refuse to accept them as patients. Patients who are enrolled in managed care complained that their treatment options are more limited than private traditional private insurance because of the use of gatekeepers, requires authorizations, and queuing and even people with private insurance also suggest that out-of-pocket cost and deductibles the cost of care beyond the reach of many (Vasques, 2017).

It is essential that more health plans, both non-profit and for-profit, start to be held accountable for fairness framework to begin the strict process of addressing issues of fairness, entitlement to an equitable distribution of our limited health care resources. More importantly, this process must be collaborative and include a wide variety of decision-makers and stakeholders across all levels of society. Raising social awareness around the unjust distribution of resources and the lack of access to basic health care services by many impoverished and disadvantaged individuals is a critical first step. Lastly, The U.S. health care system needs to change the way people from received health care services based on their ability to pay and begin to focus on a practical method for rationing services as called for by the theory of justice Reference(Exploring Impactful Healthcare Policies)

Trotochaud, K. (2006). Ethical issues and access to healthcare. Journal Of Infusion Nursing, 29(3), 165-170.

Dirks response

When examining the concept of health care as a right, one may consider it as either a legal or a moral one. People argue whether healthcare is a right, a privilege, or a responsibility. A system that distributes healthcare unevenly, on the basis of any determining factor other than necessity, raises numerous questions about how ethical that system is. In a society where disparity in the level of care or access to care exists, inevitably there will be individuals who fail to receive the care for which they desperately need (Fuchs, 1996). Failure to access care early on will undoubtedly lead to individuals consuming a greater proportion of healthcare resources, should the degree of their morbidity escalate, and therefore increase the burden on health provision.

Although some might consider that enshrining health care as a right in law may lead to over-utilization of healthcare resources, the consumption of these resources does not result in fiscal or otherwise measurable gain for the individual seeking them. Ethical frameworks further support the notion of healthcare as a human right (Fuchs & Emaneul, 2005).

  1. Suffering from a lack of medical care is harmful.
  2. If it is within our power to prevent something harmful from happening, without sacrificing anything nearly as important, it is wrong not to do so.
  3. By improving health care, suffering can be prevented without making significant personal losses.
  4. Therefore, by not improving health care, and to an extent, by not introducing health care as a right, we are doing something wrong.

With that said, it could be argued that although people need health care, food, and shelter, this does not necessarily obligate others to make such provisions available. Food, for example, is not considered a right; companies are permitted to sell it, and it can be withheld from those who cannot afford it. The difficulty in introducing health care as a right lies in the fact that care, unlike other goods, cannot be simply quantified and allocated equally to members of a society (Fuchs & Emaneul, 2005). Thus, there comes a point where the lack of responsibility of one person must be compensated by an increase in another, where the healthy pay for the unhealthy. We, therefore, find that the question of whether health care should be offered as a right very complex, with ethical, judicial and financial tensions.

Many think that an all Payer System could be a better regulation approach to access healthcare. This system has control over multiple insurance payers and thus standardize payments for physicians through a governmental authority. This can lead to equality when paying for the third-party payers. Also, health care providers or physicians will not be motivated to care for a patient more that another because their payments are uniform across several insurance payers. Also, physicians will not be able to offset the plan of cost reduction by cost shifting because no insurance company underpays or overpays for any service (Vladeck & Rice, 2009). This system allows control over the market for the patients (demand side) who can now be financially safe in their choices of health care providers (supply side). The all-Payer system programs allow for hospitals to get reimbursements when they treat the uninsured, so this seems like an added value benefit for both the provider and the purchaser.(Exploring Impactful Healthcare Policies)

A fundamental difficulty with considering healthcare as a right is that this right, unlike many others, is dependent upon the resources of a society, and the ability to meet the demands of the population without disparity in distribution and allocation of medical care. As such, even if this right were to be upheld universally, there would still be a void in care for individuals between different societies (Freeman, Holderby-Fox, & Housepian, 2015). To address this apparent void we need to assess what exactly constitutes a fair system of distribution. It would seem to make sense to me to consider establishing a minimum level of health care provision.

Dissociative Disorders

Dissociative Disorders

(Dissociative Disorders)

For some time, criminal defendants and their attorneys have attempted to introduce mental health issues into the court setting. Indeed, the legal system has recognized that certain behaviors, prompted by mental health diagnoses, need to be taken into account when dealing with a defendant. Arguably, no diagnosis given in this area is more controversial than dissociative disorders. Many defendants, with little success, have attempted to use dissociative symptoms in hopes of mitigating their responsibility of alleged criminal wrongdoing. Therefore, it is especially important to know this area of disorders and how they are diagnosed.

To prepare:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Focus on Chapter 8 of your text, and on the dissociative disorder classifications in the DSM-5.
  • Consider the challenges dissociative disorders might present to a forensic psychology professional in a legal setting.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a comparison (similarities and differences) of dissociative identity disorder and one other dissociative disorder. Highlight the difference between the disorders in a way that allows you to accurately distinguish between the two when making a diagnosis. Then explain challenges dissociative disorders might present to forensic psychology professionals when introduced in a legal setting.

Dissociative disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by disruptions in consciousness, identity, memory, and perception. Individuals with these disorders may experience a disconnection or detachment from their thoughts, feelings, memories, or even their sense of identity. The most well-known dissociative disorder is Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder, where a person exhibits two or more distinct identities or personality states.

Other types of dissociative disorders include Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder, where individuals feel detached from their own body or reality, and Dissociative Amnesia, involving memory gaps for significant personal information. These conditions often result from severe trauma, such as abuse or extreme stress, serving as a coping mechanism for the mind to protect itself from overwhelming experiences.

Treatment typically involves psychotherapy, focusing on integrating fragmented aspects of one’s identity and addressing the underlying trauma. A supportive therapeutic relationship and a safe environment play crucial roles in helping individuals with dissociative disorders regain a sense of continuity and self-awareness.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Health Care Discussion

Health Care Discussion

(Health Care Discussion)

Health care is a critical societal issue that requires comprehensive attention. Accessible and affordable health services are fundamental rights, essential for individual well-being and overall community health. A robust health care system should prioritize preventive care, ensuring early detection and management of diseases. Adequate funding and resources must be allocated to support healthcare infrastructure, medical research, and healthcare professionals.(Health Care Discussion)

Additionally, the integration of technology can enhance efficiency, patient engagement, and data-driven decision-making. Policymakers need to address disparities in healthcare access, considering socio-economic factors and geographical distribution. Collaborative efforts between public and private sectors, along with international cooperation, are vital for addressing global health challenges. Ultimately, a holistic approach that combines preventive measures, technological advancements, equitable access, and international cooperation is necessary to achieve optimal health outcomes for all.(Health Care Discussion)

Please answer the following questions in 100-150 words PER QUESTION. CITE ANY SOURCES USED.

1. Using the internet, research the organ donation laws in the state of Georgia, and provide a summary of those laws, and copy and paste in the URL address(s) that support(s) the information. Are you yourself listed as an organ donor and why or why not? If you so wish, you may also share if your family has had any experiences with organ donation and what your family would or would not do differently if a similar situation arose.

2. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) has impacted all patients with the general intention of protecting our privacy and rights as a patient. Research HIPAA and provide and reflect on what this Act was intended to address.  Also provide a brief overview of how this has impacted you as an individual consumer/patient.

3. Research two medical coverages from different companies and share your opinion of both medical coverages. Contrast the two and comment on the similarities and differences.

4. Describe why registers/registries are important in the healthcare setting. Be sure to reference a specific register/registry as a supportive example.

5. Think of a time when your healthcare visit was documented entirely via an Electronic Health Record/Computer?  Did this impact the overall quality of care that you received during your encounter?  Why or why not?

6. Think of a time when you read about fraud in the healthcare industry. What occurred and how was the specific activity flagged as fraud to begin with? In your reflection also list out how this could have been prevented and what can be/is done to prevent it from continuing to occur.
