4-3 Project One Submission Assignment/ Western South Central Region

Competencies

In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competencies:

  • Apply statistical techniques to address research problems
  • Perform regression analysis to address an authentic problem

Overview

The purpose of this project is to have you complete all of the steps of a real-world linear regression research project starting with developing a research question, then completing a comprehensive statistical analysis, and ending with summarizing your research conclusions.

Scenario

You have been hired by the D. M. Pan National Real Estate Company to develop a model to predict median housing prices for homes sold in 2019. The CEO of D. M. Pan wants to use this information to help their real estate agents better determine the use of square footage as a benchmark for listing prices on homes. Your task is to provide a report predicting the median housing prices based square footage. To complete this task, use the provided real estate data set for all U.S. home sales as well as national descriptive statistics and graphs provided.

Directions

Using the Project One Template located in the What to Submit section, generate a report including your tables and graphs to determine if the square footage of a house is a good indicator for what the listing price should be. Reference the National Statistics and Graphs document for national comparisons and the Real Estate County Data spreadsheet (both found in the Supporting Materials section) for your statistical analysis.

Note: Present your data in a clearly labeled table and using clearly labeled graphs.

Specifically, include the following in your report:

Introduction

  1. Describe the report: Give a brief description of the purpose of your report.
    1. Define the question your report is trying to answer.
    2. Explain when using linear regression is most appropriate.
      1. When using linear regression, what would you expect the scatterplot to look like?
    3. Explain the difference between response and predictor variables in a linear regression to justify the selection of variables.

Data Collection

  1. Sampling the data: Select a random sample of 50 counties.
    1. Identify your response and predictor variables.
  2. Scatterplot: Create a scatterplot of your response and predictor variables to ensure they are appropriate for developing a linear model.

Data Analysis

  1. Histogram: For your two variables, create histograms.
  2. Summary statistics: For your two variables, create a table to show the mean, median, and standard deviation.
  3. Interpret the graphs and statistics:
    1. Based on your graphs and sample statistics, interpret the center, spread, shape, and any unusual characteristic (outliers, gaps, etc.) for the two variables.
    2. Compare and contrast the shape, center, spread, and any unusual characteristic for your sample of house sales with the national population. Is your sample representative of national housing market sales?

Develop Your Regression Model

  1. Scatterplot: Provide a graph of the scatterplot of the data with a line of best fit.
    1. Explain if a regression model is appropriate to develop based on your scatterplot.
  2. Discuss associations: Based on the scatterplot, discuss the association (direction, strength, form) in the context of your model.
    1. Identify any possible outliers or influential points and discuss their effect on the correlation.
    2. Discuss keeping or removing outlier data points and what impact your decision would have on your model.
  3. Find r: Find the correlation coefficient (r).
    1. Explain how the r value you calculated supports what you noticed in your scatterplot.

Determine the Line of Best Fit. Clearly define your variables. Find and interpret the regression equation. Assess the strength of the model.

  1. Regression equation: Write the regression equation (i.e., line of best fit) and clearly define your variables.
  2. Interpret regression equation: Interpret the slope and intercept in context.
  3. Strength of the equation: Provide and interpret R-squared.
    1. Determine the strength of the linear regression equation you developed.
  4. Use regression equation to make predictions: Use your regression equation to predict how much you should list your home for based on the square footage of your home.

Conclusions

  1. Summarize findings: In one paragraph, summarize your findings in clear and concise plain language for the CEO to understand. Summarize your results.
    1. Did you see the results you expected, or was anything different from your expectations or experiences?
      1. What changes could support different results, or help to solve a different problem?
      2. Provide at least one question that would be interesting for follow-up research.

Your manager wants current employees and new hires to understand how the company’s benefit offerings reflect and support the company’s vision, mission, and organizational strategy.

Instructions

The website content should include information on both mandatory and discretionary benefits that are commonly offered in your industry. Use the Benefits Website Content Assignment Template [DOCX] to complete the assignment, which includes the following:

  1. Write a short overview of the company that includes the organization’s vision, mission, and values.
  2. Identify a minimum of three mandatory employee benefits.
  3. Provide the legal justification crucial to understanding the mandatory benefits offered.
  4. Identify a minimum of three discretionary employee benefits.
  5. Provide related information that is crucial to understanding the discretionary employee benefits offered.
  6. Evaluate how the discretionary and mandatory benefits align with the company’s organizational strategy.

The website content should include information on both mandatory and discretionary benefits that are commonly offered in your industry. Use the Benefits Website Content Assignment Template [DOCX]

to complete the assignment, which includes the following:

(Dr. Vic: Remember, you MUST use the template provided within this assignment’s instructions!  Also, make sure you have answered our DB for this week, “Trends in Benefits Packages” this will put you in the right frame of mind for this written assignment.

Also, I need to see  4  pages of material!  Even though this assignment needs to be on our template, please do not briefly reply to our questions, you need to reply fully should you wish to earn an “Exemplary” rating/score (per our assignment rubric) on each portion of the assignment. I have provided substantial help for you below, please reply with strong graduate-level substance. Thanks.

1.  Write a short overview of the company that includes the organization’s vision, mission, and values.

(Dr. Vic: remember, mission means – what you intend to do (why does the organization exist), vision is how you intend to do it, and values is what behaviors do you intend to use).

(Dr. Vic: you should be able to develop legal justification(s) – what laws apply to mandatory benefits, from your research on Question #1).

4.  Identify a minimum of three discretionary employee benefits.

(Dr. Vic: think big-picture here, what are three optional – but very common, benefits that everyone at the company/ organization would get, HINT: accrued time off [vacation/sick time], Retirement acct.….and….)

5.  Provide related information that is crucial to understanding the discretionary employee benefits offered.

(Dr. Vic: what kinds of data would you need to know in order to create a well-crafted optional employee benefits package? For example, would you conduct a local market study of benefits from similar companies? BMGT 496 – Project 1: News Event (20%)

Project 1 is due Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. eastern time of week 3 unless otherwise changed by the instructor.

Purpose:  In the first assignment, you have the opportunity to see how ethics can play out in a real-world scenario.  You will read the case scenario and answers the questions in a narrative format. Use headings for each question.  Headings are not the question.  You are required to use the course material to support your reasoning and the conclusions made.

Outcomes met by completing this project:

1. identify ethical issues that arise in domestic and global business environments using an understanding of ethical concepts and of legal and business principles

Case Scenario:

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic required Americans to shelter in place thus causing the U.S. economy to freeze-up, resulting in millions of lost jobs.  The U.S. Congress passed legislation to try and limit the economic damage.  Included in the legislation was a stimulus package that would give $1,200 to single tax filers making $75,000 or less and $2,400 to married couples making $150,000 or less.  The purpose of the payment was to give people emergency funds and to stimulate the economy.  Also included was the CARES Act that provided the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).  The PPP was a program administered by the Small Business Administration that was targeted at small business.  It provided for a government loan that was forgivable if used to pay employees’ salaries and benefits, mortgages, rent, and utilities. According to the SBA website, “[t]he Paycheck Protection Program is a loan designed to provide a direct incentive for small businesses to keep their workers on the payroll.”

USAA is a member-owned organization that provided insurance and financial services exclusively to current and former members of the military as well as their family members.  USAA has an excellent reputation as a well-run organization and for giving its members good service.  Many USAA members maintain checking accounts with it.  Some of those members who have checking accounts had overdrawn their balances and had a negative balance in their accounts.  When the $1,200 or $2,400 stimulus check were deposited, USAA used those amounts to offset the negative balances in some of its members’ accounts.  Members were not informed in advance that this would be the case.  This resulted in some USAA members not having any access to the stimulus money.  The action USAA took in crediting the funds to existing account deficits was perfectly legal.

Shake Shack is a corporation that owns and licenses restaurants selling traditional American fare like hamburgers and milk shakes.  It currently operates 124 locations in the U.S. and overseas.  As of May 4, 2020, the company had a market capitalization of $2.06 billion.  The company is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.  In 2019, Shake Shack’s CEO received $2.3 million in compensation.  Shake Shack applied for and received a loan of $10 million under PPP.  The loan was permissible under a provision in PPP the allows restaurant chains to apply when each location has fewer than 500 employees.  Shortly after Shake Shack received the loan, the PPP ran out of funds and many small businesses did not receive loans.

and the course material.   Using course material goes beyond defining terms and are used to explain the ‘why and how’ of a situation.  Avoid merely making statements but close the loop of the discussion by explaining how something happens or why something happens, which focuses on importance and impact.  In closing the loop, you will demonstrate the ability to think clearly and rationally showing an understanding of the logical connections between the ideas presented in a case scenario, the course material and the question(s) being asked.  Using one or two in-text citations from the course material throughout the entire paper will not earn many points on an assignment.  The use of a variety of course material is expected consistently supporting what is presented.  The support must be relevant and applicable to the topic being discussed.  Points are not earned for mentioning a term or concept but by clearly and thoroughly explaining or discussing the question at hand.

NOTE: If external sources are used, what is presented will not count and a penalty for following instruction will apply.

Project Requirements

Introduction

Write an Introduction paragraph.  The Introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of the paper and will be used to describe to the reader the intent of the paper explaining the main points covered in the paper.  This intent should be understood prior to reading the remainder of the paper so the reader knows exactly what is being covered in the paper. Consider writing the introduction last to ensure that all of the main points are covered.

Ethical Issue(s)

Identify and discuss the ethical issue(s) related to USAA and Shake Shack

Stakeholders Implications

Identify the stakeholders involved in the actions of both companies. Discuss the potential implications of the company’s actions on each stakeholder or stakeholder group.  Give examples.

Kantian Viewpoint

Explain how Kant would view the actions of both USAA and Shake Shack.

Utilitarianism Viewpoint

Explain how a utilitarian would view USAA and Shake Shack’s actions.

Recommended Actions

Regardless of what these companies actually did, recommend the actions that you think they ethically should take.  There is no right or wrong action, but rather it is about supporting the actions you choose from your ethical arguments.

Conclusion

Write a concluding paragraph that is brief and summarizes the main points.  Provide specific information related to the major topics discussed in the paper.

Review the Paper

Read the paper to ensure all required elements are present.

The following are specific requirements that you will follow.  Use the checklist to mark off that you have followed each specific requirement.

Checklist Specific Project Requirements

Proofread your paper

Read and use the grading rubric while completing the paper to ensure all requirements are met that will lead to the highest possible grade.

Third person writing is required.  Third person means that there are no words such as “I, me, my, we, or us” (first person writing), nor is there use of “you or your” (second person writing).  If uncertain how to write in the third person, view this link:  http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/education/grammar/first- second-and-third-person.

Contractions are not used in business writing, so do not use them.

Paraphrase and do not use direct quotations.  Paraphrase means you do not use more than four consecutive words from a source document.  Removing quotation marks and citing is inappropriate.  Instead put a passage from a source document into your own words and attribute the passage to the source document.  There should be no passages with

quotation marks.  Using more than four consecutive words from a source document would require direct quotation marks.  Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from having quotation marks.   If more than four consecutive words are used from source documents, this material will not be included in the grade.

You are expected to use the weekly course materials to develop the analysis and support the reasoning.   There should be a robust use of the course material.  Material used from a source document must be cited and referenced.  A reference within a reference list cannot exist without an associated in-text citation and vice versa.  Changing words from a passage does not exclude the passage from having quotation marks.

Use in-text citations and provide a reference list that contains the reference associated with each in-text citation.

You may not use books in completing this problem set unless part of the course material.  Also, do not use a dictionary, Wikipedia or Investopedia or similar sources.

Submit the paper in the Assignment Folder (The assignment submitted to the Assignment Folder will be considered the student’s final product and therefore ready for grading by the instructor.  It is incumbent upon the student to verify the assignment is the correct submission.  No exceptions will be considered by the instructor).

NOTE:  All submitted work is to be your original work. You may not use any work from another student, the Internet or an online clearinghouse.  You are expected to understand the Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism Policy, and know that it is your responsibility to learn about instructor and general academic expectations with regard to proper citation of sources as specified in the APA Publication Manual, 7th Ed. (Students are held accountable for in-text citations and an associated reference list only).

Humanities Final Project

Course Outcomes

In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following outcomes:

  • Develop questions about fundamental aspects of human culture that inform personal assumptions, beliefs, and values using evidence from cultural artifacts and systems
  • Investigate major developments in the humanities for informing critical questions related to human culture and endeavors
  • Determine fundamental approaches to studying the humanities in addressing questions about how cultural artifacts and the culture they are created in have influenced each other
  • Articulate the value of the humanities for their impact on contemporary issues focusing on how humans generate unique meanings

Overview

The enduring relevance of the humanities is that they encourage us to consider the “big ideas.” From wondering what culture is to how we go about studying it, and what is the relationship between objects of cultural and historical significance and the culture in which they are created, the study of the humanities is all-encompassing. The relationship between the creators of works of cultural and historical significance and the things they create and how human meaning is generated through cultural works are part of the themes we will be exploring in this assignment. We humans seem driven to express and create in our search to understand and be understood.

Scenario

For the purposes of this assignment, imagine you are a researcher of human cultures, an anthropologist who is looking from the future back to our world today. In this position, you develop a natural curiosity about cultural works and how they represent a particular culture. You are also curious about how cultural works influence the environment in which they exist. You are new at your job, and your first project is to conduct a thorough analysis of today’s culture via a cultural work, looking to understand how it represents culture and how it reflects its cultural environment. The results of your analysis will be used to craft the copy for a brochure accompanying a museum exhibit about cultural works of the current year.

Directions

Analysis of a Cultural Work As an anthropologist, you will start your task by analyzing the work of human creative expression that you selected in Module Four. With this work in mind, respond to the questions below. Remember, the insights you gain here will be used to write the copy that will go in the museum exhibit brochure.

Answer the following questions:

  1. Describe the work in detail. Consider the following:
    1. Where did you see the work?
    2. What elements or characteristics stand out to you?
  2. Describe the purpose of the work. Consider the following:
    1. What do you think the creator intended to express?
    2. Were they successful?
  3. Use the work to explore how acts of creative expression impact and are impacted by the people and situations that surround them. Consider the following:
    1. What contributions does the work selected make to continuing a dialogue about that culture and the importance of its works?
  4. State questions you have after thinking deeply about this work. What more do you want to know regarding the following?
    1. The relationship between culture and expression: What is the relationship between the possible intent of the creator and your own interpretation of its meaning?
    2. Explain how your values have shaped and are shaped by your expression and that of others.
  5. Explain how you would approach answering these questions:
    1. What would you study about this work that might address the questions you stated?
    2. Where would you find information to address the questions? Next, draw conclusions about how the work you selected relates to the humanities:
  6. Explain why you believe humans have a need to express themselves through created works of cultural and historical significance.
    1. Describe a culture shift or event related to the work you selected. This could be a cultural shift that influenced the creation of the work, or it could be a cultural shift that came about because of it.
    2. Explain how a concept or resource you encountered in this course has informed your explanation. Be sure to cite any sources used.
  7. Explain how you think the act of human creative expression impacts and is impacted by the culture in which it was created.
    1. Explain the relationship between human creative expression and the culture in which the work you selected was created using the insights you gained from studying it.
    2. Explain how a concept or resource you encountered in this course has informed your explanation. Be sure to cite any sources used.
  8. Explain how you believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with in the present day (contemporary to your coursework, not the future scenario posed above). Be sure to be specific about the issues you are addressing.
    1. Use the insights you gained from studying the work you selected to explain how creative expression can impact today’s issues.
    2. Explain how a person or concept encountered in your study of the humanities has informed your explanation. Be sure to cite any sources used.

What to Submit

Your submission should be a three- to four-page Word document with 12-point Times New Roman font, double spacing, and one-inch margins. Two sources are required, one of which must be academic. Sources should be cited according to APA style. Consult the Shapiro Library APA Style Guide for more information on citations.

Management Assignment – Case Study

Document Preview:

Case study – Women on the Right Track at CP Rail Women comprise nearly half of Canada’s workforce, but over the last two decades, they have made no progress in obtaining senior management roles. This lack of success may deter younger women from entering certain professions and from learning from role models. Furthermore, research shows that a lack of diversity can affect retention, productivity, and innovation. Companies with more female senior managers have a higher return on equity than those with lower rates of female senior managers. With this research in mind, CP Rail undertook three initiatives to increase the number of women managers: Each department must have diversity goals. Mentoring programs for females have been established. Senior women discuss their careers in forums. Women on Track offers networking opportunities. To date, the program has been successful, with the number of women in senior management doubling over 5 years. Questions Compare CP Rail’s initiatives to advance women with the recommended six-step program for the implementation of employment equity. Review the list in Highlights in HRM 3.1 (retention strategies). What more could CP Rail undertake? Here is Highlight H.R.M 3.1 ( retention strategies ) see bellow. 2. Fairmont became particularly interested in the initiatives because of its locations in sensitive environments such as national parks, biosphere reserves, and wetlands. The environmental pro-gram now includes eco-innovation projects at..

In Hofstede’s study, he describes and measures 6 cultural dimensions – some of which were also used in the GLOBE study : Power Distance, Individualism, Masculinity, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long Term Orientation and Indulgence.

1) Go to this page: https://www.hofstede-insights.com/product/compare-countries/

and select United States.

2) Choose another country (of your choice)  to be able to see a comparison of their scores.

3) What can you tell us about the difference between the U.S. and the other country?

Please respond to two colleagues. You may give input or opinions on cultures that you know, or have lived in. Remember that these results are general and may not apply to every experience or example you have seen.

Task: Submit to complete this assignment Global Assignment table

Create a table that compares two societal cultures on the nine dimensions of culture identified by the GLOBE project. Depending on the countries you choose, you may need to do more research. Your table should have three columns, one with the nine dimensions, one with the first country, and one with the second country.

Following is an example of comparing one dimension between Germany and China:

Background and Summary of GLOBE

The Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania was the home of the GLOBE Research Project, which investigated variations in business leadership worldwide.  GLOBE comprised 170 researchers in 62 societies over 11 years.  The research team’s stated objective was…
To determine the extent to which the practices and values of business leadership are universal (i.e., are similar globally), and the extent to which they are specific to just a few societies.

The team is attained this objective.  GLOBE’s findings present to us all a breakthrough in our ability to think about business leadership in a way that is accurate, action-oriented, and – most importantly – genuinely global.
Any organization that devotes resources to developing global leaders now has within its grasp the data and the guideposts to accomplish this critical goal.  It’s now possible with unprecedented confidence to assess, develop, and measure top leadership talent in a way that captures the full meaning of “global.”

The first report from the GLOBE team was an 818-page book by R.J. House et al., Culture, Leadership, and Organizations,  published by Sage in 2004; this précis addresses the 2004 publication only.  A second report of the GLOBE team was published in 2007 (note).  A third report is in press.  The other three articles at Grovewell.com/GLOBE (total 8,500 words) provide all those responsible for leadership development with an overview and interpretation of the findings reported in 2004.

The first question addressed by the team was which measurement standards (“independent variables”) to use to be precise about the similarities and differences among various societal and organizational cultures. Their efforts yielded nine “cultural dimensions” that serve as their standard of measurement.
