Week 2 Project: assignment writing and pronunciation assignment.

  1. Please note this assignment is NOT to be written as patient case studies like in our discussion forum assignments, but is a medical department report where you tell me about the medical department with at least 10 diseases or disorders per department, at least 3 different medical tests used to diagnose patients, and at least 3 different medical procedures used to treat patients. READ the directions for the assignment and grading rubric very carefully. Remember that half of the assignment points are for the audio recording of the report as well, so you must also record your report by speaking into a recording device and submit it the assignment dropbox as well. Please look at the writing and pronunciation assignment advice/example I posted under announcements and emailed as well, so you do not have to revise the assignment.
PLEASE REFER to the following “EXAMPLE” to help give you an idea of how to write the descriptions of the other Medical departments.

PEDIATRIC CARE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT REPORT:

The pediatric department attends to mostly ambulatory patients. Our most common cases involve asthma, influenza, otitis media, constipation, appendicitis, and allergic rhinitis, in addition to various trauma cases mostly involving fractures such as simple fractures, complex fractures, and spiral fractures. Our physicians perform surgical procedures such as tonsillectomies, inguinal herniorrhaphy (inguinal hernia repairs), and appendectomies. For fractured bones, our surgeons perform surgical procedures such as external fixation, open reduction and internal fixation.

In the diagnosis of trauma cases we utilize our new CT scan and MRI facility, and we have recently added capacity to perform PET scans, which we use effectively to diagnose various early onset pediatric oncology cases such as osteoblastomas, and osteochondromas. A speciality group is being formed to diagnose and treat pediatric cardiology cases to include children with cardiac disorders such as congenital heart failure, cardiac valve abnormalities, ventricular septal defect, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and tetralogy of fallot. Some of the cardiac tests utilized to diagnose these cardiovascular disorders are ECG, echocardiogram, cardiac stress test, coronary angiography and cardiac catheterization. Recently, our pediatric department identified a chronic lead poisoning case that presented only with lead colic. It was quickly recognized by our physicians who utilized the laboratory staff, who examined the patient’s blood sample in doing a complete blood count CBC and identified the stippled red blood cells, pathognomonic of lead poisoning.

References should be listed at the end of the assignment, even our book reference, and references should be cited too in APA format with author’s last names and year like this at the end of the sentences (Little, 2017).

Also, read the grading rubric and instructions first on this assignment! Please do not submit discussion forum posts of your patient case studies for this assignment as it is not acceptable because this is a separately graded assignment.

Managing Variables in Research

Managing Variables in Research

(Managing Variables in Research)

Comment1

Extraneous Variables are undesirable variables that influence the relationship between the variables that an experimenter is examining. These variables are undesirable because they add error to an experiment. A major goal in research design is to decrease or control the influence of extraneous Variables as much as possible. (Psychology world, 2017). The extraneous variables can be hold constant by creating a standardized environment and procedure so that all variables are the same in each condition and therefore cannot be confounding. These variables exist in all studies and can interfere with obtaining a clear understanding of the relationship among the study variables. For example, if a study focused on the effect of relaxation therapy on the perception of incisional pain, the researchers would have to control the extraneous variables, such as type of surgical incision and time, amount, and type of pain medication administered after surgery, to prevent their influence on the patient’s perception of pain. Selecting only patients with abdominal incisions who are hospitalized and receiving only one type of pain medication intravenously after surgery would control some of these extraneous variables. Controlling extraneous variables enables researchers to determine the effects of an intervention or treatment on study outcomes more accurately. (Grove, Gray & Burns, 2015).

Comment2

Quantitative research is a type of formal, objective type of research and generates numerical information about concepts and relationships between variables and includes descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental and experimental (Burns & Grove, 2011).

The type of quantitative research used is based on the amount information the researcher has on the subject before the experiment. If a researcher knows little about the topic they may begin with descriptive to gather better information then move on to correlational, quasi-experimental or experimental studies (Burns & Grove, 2011). Descriptive research is typically without manipulation and leads to further quantitative studies (Burns & Grove, 2011).

Correlation studies describe relationships between variables in a positive, negative relationship or no relationship such as smoking cigarettes negatively affecting the smoker’s life span however does not study to which a degree or the exact cause and often will lead to a more extensive study such as quasi-experimental or experimental research (Burns & Grove, 2011).

Quasi-experimental research examines relationships to better determine a cause-and-effect relationship between variables and involve implementing a treatment to a concern and evaluating the effects (Burns & Grove, 2011). Quasi-experimental research involves less control of variables than strict experimental research and often utilize humans or patients as a variable and is most often used in nursing research (Burns & Grove, 2011). An example of quasi-experimental research can include a certain exercise program for cardiac rehab patients post CABG and the effects on improving the health or assisting in the rehabilitation.

Expense Forecasting & Benchmarking

Assignment: Expense Forecasting & Benchmarking

(Expense Forecasting & Benchmarking)

Looking Ahead: Application Assignment: Expense Forecasting and Financial Analysis Cycle

You will begin this assignment in Week 9 and it will be due by Day 7 of Week 10.

Throughout this course, you’ve examined the importance of anticipating financial fluctuations that may impact your organization’s ability to provide services. While financial managers have no time machines or crystal balls, they do have expense forecasts. Expense forecasting is one of the preeminent tools that financial managers can use to prepare their organizations for future fiscal turbulence. In this Assignment, you will examine a scenario and generate a corresponding expense forecast in Excel.

Before pursuing an opportunity or making a major purchase, financial decision makers must first ascertain if the expenditures are justified. Determining whether a new process, system, or purchase will yield worthwhile returns is no easy task. However, managers have a variety of tools to help them decide whether the new expenditure is warranted. Analyzing a venture’s benefit/cost ratio, marginal profit and loss statement, and break-even points enable nurse managers to make educated decisions about how they choose to commit their funds.

Note: For those Assignments in this course that require you to perform calculations you must:Use the Excel spreadsheet template for the Week 3 assignment
Show all your calculations and formulas in the spreadsheet.
Answer any questions included with the problems (as text in the Excel spreadsheet).

A title and reference page are NOT needed in this assignment.  Put your name and assignment at the top of the Excel spreadsheet.

For those not comfortable with the use of Microsoft Excel, this week’s Optional Resources suggest several tutorials.

To prepare:

Use the Week 10 Application Assignment Template, provided in this week’s Learning Resources, to complete this assignment.   Carefully examine the information in each of the scenarios and provide the necessary calculations. Using this information will help you answer the questions. Note: All the scenarios will be submitted as one document. Each scenario will be on a different tab in the spreadsheet.

Expense Forecasting(Expense Forecasting & Benchmarking)

In this Application Assignment you calculate scenarios focusing on benefit/cost ratio analysis, marginal profit and loss statements, and break-even analysis. For these scenarios, you will utilize the provided figures to perform calculations and then make recommendations about the viability of the investment opportunities

Expense Forecasting Scenario

Your department has performed 20,000 procedures during the first six months (January–June) of 20X1. Spending during that period of time was $210,000 for fixed expense items and $1,200,000 for variable expense items. Of those amounts, $50,000 of fixed expense money was spent on preparing for a Joint Commission survey. Volume is anticipated to be 10% higher in the second half of the year. On November 1st, two new procedure technicians will begin work. The salary and fringe benefit costs for each are $96,000/year. Based on the information provided, prepare an expense forecast for 20X1.

Annualization for Fixed:  (Adjusted Total for Year to Date Expense/6) * 12 =Total Annualized Amounts

Annualization for Variable (Adjusted Total for Year to Date Expense/ 20,000) * 40,000 =Total Annualized Amounts.

Financial Analysis Cycle

Marginal Profit and Loss Statement Scenario

You are examining a proposal for a new business opportunity – a new procedure for which demand is expected to be 1,400 units the first year, growing by 600 units a year thereafter. The price charged per procedure is $1,000. The collection rate is anticipated to be 80%. Each procedure consumes $300 of supplies. Salary cost is estimated to cost $540,000 each year, fringe benefits are 25% of salaries, rent for the facility is $55,000/yr and operating cost are $120,000/yr.

Questions:

  1. Develop a marginal profit and loss statement for this business opportunity.Based on that analysis, should this opportunity be pursued?
Break-Even Analysis Scenario(Expense Forecasting & Benchmarking)

You can charge $1,075 for a new service. Demand is anticipated to be 8,000 units a year. Your business is able to handle up to 16,500 units annually, so capacity should not be a problem. The average collection rate is 80%. The new service has annual fixed costs of $4,700,000. Variable cost per unit of service is $420.

Question: Use break-even analysis to determine if this new service is financially viable. If the business is not financially viable, what steps could you take to make a case to proceed with implementation?  Explain your decision.

Benefit/Cost Ratio Analysis Scenario

You are considering the acquisition of a new piece of equipment with a useful life of five years. This new technology will make your clinical operation more efficient and allow for a reduction of 10 FTEs. The equipment purchase price is $4,500,000 plus 10% installation fee. The purchase price includes service for the first year, an item that has an annual cost of $10,000. There is a potential for additional volume of 150,000 units in the first year, growing by 30,000 each year thereafter. The price charged per unit is $15.00 with a 50% collection rate. The staff being eliminated are paid $12.50 per hour. The fringe benefits rate is 20%. The hurdle rate is 7.5%.

Questions: After reviewing Dr. Ward’s Video and the calculations below, please answer the following questions:

  • What is meant by  benefit/cost ratio, average payback period and ROI  and why are the all  important to understand when purchasing new equipment?
  • Based on this information, would you pursue this opportunity?
  • Explain your decision  in 250-500 words.

Human Service Assignment

Human Service Assignment

(Human Service Assignment)

Question description

To prepare for this project, make a list of three of the most prevalent social problems experienced by people who live in your town or city (e.g., unemployment). Then, make a list of the types of services that someone who has these problems might need. Think about the information that you discussed in the Survey of Social Problems class. Then, using information from your Applied Skills in Human Services course, create a plan that solves the problems described in the following scenario.

Scenario:

You are working as a community resource coordinator at a Workforce One Stop. Your primary duties are to attend community fairs and events to advertise the services provided at the One Stop (usually job training, food stamps, cash assistance, housing, and referrals to substance abuse and mental health treatment). Further, you collect information about your town’s agencies, for profit and not for profit, and provide updated information to the intake specialists and employment counselors who work directly with clients. Your supervisor has given you a task: If you complete it, you will be promoted to intake specialist. You are excited because you want a promotion and raise, but the task seems impossible. In the past, you have done a great job of updating the agency’s database, but case managers and counselors were still not able to get clients connected with services effectively.

The task:

You are to create a coordination of services plan, a plan to update and connect clients in your agency with appropriate services offered by other agencies. The plan must include:

  1. Guidelines for confidentiality of client information during the referral process
  2. Guidelines for identifying barriers to service (e.g., transportation or cost of services)
  3. Guidelines for making, tracking, and assessing the success of referrals to each agency
  4. A reasonable timeline that specifies the time from first the meeting with the client to the time that the referral is made to the amount of time for checking with the client or agency to assess the effectiveness of the referral
  5. Guidelines for coordinating all of the referrals to help the client to manage appointments and services

Assume that your clients will need access to substance abuse, mental health, domestic violence, and job training services. Be as creative as possible when creating your plan; you may add a chart with your time line or a graphic that shows how someone in your agency might coordinate the clients’ services (e.g., flow chart).

Be specific and brief as you write your plan. Think of it as a guide to be used by case managers and other specialists in your agency.

In your body of the paper, use the following subheadings in any order:

Guidelines for Confidentiality

Guidelines for Making and Evaluating Referrals

Identifying Barriers

Timeline for Referrals

Guidelines for Coordinating Services

This project should be between 800 and 1000 words, not including your title and reference pages (only if you choose to use references, these are not required). You are required to give credit to the sources you use and to use proper APA formatting. Refer to the APA Quick Reference for help with APA, or refer to the Kaplan Writing Center or your instructor. Remember that all work must be your own, and plagiarism is not tolerated. Be sure to review the plagiarism policy in your syllabus.

Mock IRB Application-Part 1

Mock IRB Application-Part 1

(Mock IRB Application-Part 1)

MOCK IRB APPLICATION EXERCISE-PT. 1

Psychological experiments that are conducted on human or animal subjects must go through a review by an administrative body known as an Institutional Review Board (IRB).  Approval must be gained by an IRB before a study can be funded or conducted.  Researchers, whether they are faculty, students, or other affiliated personnel, must complete a detailed application that is presented to the IRB for its review.

APUS has an IRB, much like that of any research-producing university or institution.  Attached you will find an amended version of the actual application that researchers must submit to the IRB in advance of conducting psychological research. ***This is a mock version of the application.  You are not actually submitting anything to the real APUS IRB while conducting this exercise.

For this exercise, you will choose one of the psychological experiments listed at the bottom of these instructions.  These are experiments that have already been conducted and published.  Several are “classic” experiments in social psychology of which you should already be aware.  You will read the published article carefully and then you will take the knowledge gleaned from the article to complete the IRB application AS IF you were the Principal Investigator applying for approval to conduct the study.

For some of the questions included on the application, you may need to “stretch” your knowledge a bit.  For example, the published article may say that college students were given extra credit for participation, but may not go into a lot of detail regarding the process used to recruit those students.  In such a situation, you may need to use your imagination to fill in some blanks.

In addition, please remember that the goal here is to put yourself in the principal investigator’s shoes at the time that he/she conducted the experiment.  If the experiment was conducted in the 1970s, for example, remember that the standards for human experimentation were different back then.  Answer the questions as the investigator WOULD have answered them (based upon what you read about the experiment), not as they SHOULD have answered them based upon today’s ethical standards.

=================================================================================================================

Please choose ONE of the following experiments to read:

1.  The Milgram Obedience Study:  Found on pp. 27-40 in Readings About The Social Animal, 11th Edition.

2.  The Stanford Prison Experiment:  Original article available at the following: http://www.zimbardo.com/downloads/1973%20A%20Study%20of%20Prisoners%20and%20Guards,%20Naval%20Research%20Reviews.pdf

3.  Deindividuation and Anger-Mediated Interracial Aggression:  Unmasking Regressive Racism:  Found on pp. 341-356 in Readings About The Social Animal, 11thEdition.

4.  Arbitrary Social Norms Influence Sex Differences in Romantic Selectivity:  Found on pp. 568-579 in Readings About The Social Animal, 11th Edition.

Assignment Instructions (Please complete both #1 and #2 below)

1.         After carefully reading your article, please complete the attached document.  You will complete the second half of the Mock IRB Application in Part 2 of this assignment in a later week in the semester.  The attached document is editable, so please place your responses directly into the document.  Be sure to save the document on your hard drive and then upload it into the slot for the assignment.

2.         After completing the Mock IRB Assignment-Part 1, please answer the following questions in a 3-page Word Document (.docx format) and upload as an attachment to the slot for the assignment.

a.         What was the most challenging section of the Mock IRB Application-Part 1 to complete?  Why was it challenging?

b.         Were there any sections of the Mock IRB Application-Part 1 that you felt the authors of your article did not adequately address (either in terms of not doing it or not addressing it in their write-up of their Method/Procedure)?

c.          If you were actually the Principal Investigator of this study, what might you do differently in order to adequately address all the questions asked on Part 1 of this Mock IRB Application?

d.         How do you think ethical standards have changed (if at all) since the Principal Investigator of your chosen study filled out his/her own IRB Application?
