Classical Conditioning

Assignment 2: Pavlov’s Dog: An Example of Classical Conditioning

Classical Conditioning

Classical conditioning is an important theory of learning within the behavioral perspective of learning that you explored in Module 1. The key to classical conditioning is that we learn through association, which is quite different from operant conditioning in which we learn through consequence.

When Ivan Pavlov was studying the process of salivation in dogs, he made an accidental, but really important discovery—classical conditioning. He discovered that after pairing the appearance of the researcher with the delivery of food a number of times, the dogs began to salivate as soon as the researcher walked into the room even when he or she was not carrying any food.

Here is a list of the steps of the classically conditioned learning process:

Stimulus / Response Event Outcome
Neutral stimulus (NS) The researcher enters the room—prior to the dog learning that the researcher is associated with food. There is no response.
Unconditioned stimulus (UCS) Food—the dog naturally responds to the food. No learning needed.
Unconditioned response (UCR) The dog salivates because of the food. The dog did not need to be taught to salivate.
Conditioned stimulus (CS) The researcher enters the room. Now, after being paired with the food, the appearance of the researcher has become a learned stimulus.
Conditioned response (CR) Salivation now occurs because of the researcher. The dog has now learned to salivate in response to the mere presence of the researcher.

Here is another example of the steps of the classical conditioning process:

You have moved into a new apartment building. The first time you take a shower happens to correspond with the time when someone flushes the toilet. As a result of this flushing, the water in the shower becomes very hot. Now, because of this experience, each time you hear the toilet flush, you jump out of the shower before the temperature of the water changes.

  • NS: Sound of the flushing of the toilet
  • UCS: Hot water
  • UCR: Jumping out of the shower because of the hot water
  • CS: Sound of the flushing of the toilet
  • CR: Jumping out of the shower because of the sound of the flushing toilet

Now, complete the following:

Part 1

Think of a classically conditioned response you have experienced and describe the process of learning this response (what was the process you went through in becoming classically conditioned in this response). Be sure to identify the following:

  • Neutral stimulus (NS)
  • Unconditional stimulus (UCS)
  • Unconditional response (UCR)
  • Conditioned stimulus (CS)
  • Conditioned response (CR)

Part 2

Address the following questions:

  • Describe a practical application that demonstrates this classically conditioned association from your own life. What function does this classically conditioned association serve?
  • Explain what would happen if you no longer responded to this conditioned stimulus.
  • Describe the manner in which generalization works to maintain classical conditioning.
  • Identify the stimulus that has been generalized or could be generalized in your classically conditioned response.

Write a 2–3-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Be sure to also include a title page and a reference page. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc.

Psychological Treatment Plan1

Psychological Treatment Plan1

(Psychological Treatment Plan1)

It is recommended that students review the e-book The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner (Jongsma, Peterson, & Bruce, 2014) for additional assistance in completing this assignment.

Clinical and counseling psychologists utilize treatment plans to document a client’s progress toward short- and long-term goals. The content within psychological treatment plans varies depending on the clinical setting. The clinician’s theoretical orientation, evidenced-based practices, and the client’s needs are taken into account when developing and implementing a treatment plan. Typically, the client’s presenting problem(s), behaviorally defined symptom(s), goals, objectives, and interventions determined by the clinician are included within a treatment plan.

To understand the treatment planning process, students will assume the role of a clinical or counseling psychologist and develop a comprehensive treatment plan based on the same case study utilized for the Psychiatric Diagnosis assignment in PSY645. A minimum of five peer-reviewed resources must be used to support the recommendations made within the plan. The Psychological Treatment Plan must include the headings and content outlined below.

Behaviorally Defined Symptoms

  • Define the client’s presenting problem(s) and provide a diagnostic impression.
  • Identify how the problem(s) is/are evidenced in the client’s behavior.
  • List the client’s cognitive and behavioral symptoms.

Long-Term Goal

  • Generate a long-term treatment goal that represents the desired outcome for the client.
    • This goal should be broad and does not need to be measureable.

Short-Term Objectives

  • Generate a minimum of three short-term objectives for attaining the long-term goal.
    • Each objective should be stated in behaviorally measureable language. Subjective or vague objectives are not acceptable. For example, it should be stated that the objective will be accomplished by a specific date or that a specific symptom will be reduced by a certain percentage.

Interventions(Psychological Treatment Plan1)

  • Identify at least one intervention for achieving each of the short-term objectives.
  • Compare a minimum of three evidence-based theoretical orientations from which appropriate interventions can be selected for the client.
  • Explain the connection between the theoretical orientation and corresponding intervention selected.
  • Provide a rationale for the integration of multiple theoretical orientations within this treatment plan.
  • Identify two to three treatment modalities (e.g., individual, couple, family, group, etc.) that would be appropriate for use with the client.

It is a best practice to include outside providers (e.g., psychiatrists, medical doctors, nutritionists, social workers, holistic practitioners, etc.) in the intervention planning process to build a support network that will assist the client in the achievement of treatment goals.

Evaluation

  • List the anticipated outcomes of each proposed treatment intervention based on scholarly literature.
    • Be sure to take into account the individual’s strengths, weaknesses, external stressors, and cultural factors (e.g., gender, age, disability, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, etc.) in the evaluation.
  • Provide an assessment of the efficacy of evidence-based intervention options.

Ethics

  • Analyze and describe potential ethical dilemmas that may arise while implementing this treatment plan.
  • Cite specific ethical principles and any applicable law(s) for resolving the ethical dilemma(s).

The Psychological Treatment Plan

  • Must be 8 to 10 double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must use at least five peer-reviewed sources in addition to the course text.
  • Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

The Impact of Intrinsic Motivation

Assignment: The Impact of Intrinsic Motivation

(The Impact of Intrinsic Motivation)

Question description

Reflect for a moment on your nursing career. About what are you most passionate? When do you feel you are at your best? What brings you the greatest satisfaction in your work? Positive feelings in the workplace are usually fueled by intrinsic motivators: healthy relationships, meaningful purpose, competence, choice, and progress. As a nurse manager, it is helpful to recognize what motivates you to perform well in your own job. You should also take time to understand the motivations of employees. By speaking to staff about their interests and professional goals, nurse managers can build relationships and thus provide appropriate motivators.

For this Assignment, you examine your personal work experiences to determine which of the five intrinsic motivators are more influential in shaping your positive feelings about the workplace.

To prepare

  • Reflect on your work history, from your first job to your current employment.
  • Select one time period or situation in which you felt professionally happy, motivated, and fulfilled in your job. What do you remember most about this time period? What are, or were, the various personal and professional factors that helped to shape these feelings?
  • Select one time period or situation in which you felt professionally unhappy, disengaged, and unfulfilled in your job. What do you remember most about this time period? What are, or were, the various personal and professional factors that caused these feelings?
  • Review the selected pages from Chapter 7, “Coaching and Developing Others” in the course text, From Management to Leadership: Strategies for Transforming Health Care. Consider the potential influence of the five intrinsic motivators during your chosen time period or situation.
    • Which intrinsic motivators seem to resonate more with your own perceptions of job fulfillment?
    • Which motivators do you believe have greater influence on your professional well-being?
  • Review , “Fostering a Positive Workplace.” How can nurse leaders use their awareness of the five motivators to engage and retain nursing staff?

To complete

Submit a 4- to 6-page paper in which you do the following:

  • Appraise a time when you have felt professionally fulfilled. Describe the setting, your job title, and the roles and responsibilities in which you were engaged. Identify your own key intrinsic motivators and explain how these were evident in this situation. Cite specific examples.
  • Appraise a time when you have felt professionally unfulfilled. Describe the setting, your job title, and the roles and responsibilities in which you were engaged. Explain the motivator(s) that were absent and how this impacted your professional performance. Cite specific examples.
  • Discuss how you, as a nurse manager, might implement organization- or department-wide changes that would create an environment that engages staff through one or more intrinsic motivators.

Georgia Psychology Practice Standards

Georgia Psychology Practice Standards

(Georgia Psychology Practice Standards)

Georgia

Are the state practice act, rules and regulations of the licensing board available online? Please note any problems of access (is the web resource consumer friendly?) and how they are incorporated (administrative regulation, state statute, etc.). Are the APA Ethical Principles incorporated into the rules of your board? (Please note whether the Ethical Principles are advisory or have the power of law.) If the Ethical Principles are not there, does the state or province have its own set of ethical principles? Please provide these and discuss their similarities or differences compared with the APA Ethical Principles.

Ignorance is No Excuse: Community Standards of Practice as Part of the Broader Profession of Psychology

Purpose

This week we will continue exploring and discussing the foundations of psychological ethics. This material will assist in examining specific ethical behaviors in upcoming weeks. A key focus for this session is knowing what you need to know to practice within bounds. This includes various standards, rules, and ethical principles.

Objectives

1. Become familiar with the resources available online from your state or provincial licensing board and the role of the APA ethics code in those resources.

2. Gain a global familiarity with the Ethical Principles and Standards of the American Psychological Association.

Knowledge is key. If you are not familiar with your state practice act (and perhaps the notion of Sunset legislation), the rules and regulations of the licensing board in your state, the applicable code of ethics (the APA code of Ethics is for APA members, it may or may not be part of the expectations of your licensing body), what the reporting laws are for mandated exceptions to confidentiality (child/elder abuse), what the laws are related to family disputes -particularly child custody, what the laws are related to sexual exploitation, and whether such major issues as duty to warn apply, then you are vulnerable to making a mistake because you did not know. The law takes a dim view of not knowing the rules when you are part of a professional body. You need to learn those things that directly affect you.

If you get sued for warning someone they are at risk based on a therapeutic communication, it can be proper in both directions. Your client had the reasonable assumption of privilege if that is what the state rules are, or what you told him, and you may be answering a higher call in warning someone they are at risk, but you still can get sued.

Complaints against psychologists are (more or less according to the jurisdiction occurring in the following order). 1) Sexual intimacies with clients; 2) negligence (failure to warn, improper supervision); 3) fraudulent practices (lying about work performed, diagnosis, price fixing, etc.). 4)criminal conduct; 5) impairment; and, 6) breach of confidentiality.

. Read

Bersoff, pp. 1-68
Fisher, pp. 7-12.

2. See Ken Pope’s website, www.kspope.com; review Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards www.asppb.org

3. On the web, find a copy of YOUR STATE’s licensing requirements.

Crafting Compelling PowerPoint Presentations

Crafting Compelling PowerPoint Presentations

(Crafting Compelling PowerPoint Presentations)

Creating an effective PowerPoint presentation involves several key steps. First, start with a clear outline of your content to ensure a logical flow. Each slide should have a single main point, supported by concise text, visuals, or data. Use a consistent design theme throughout the presentation for cohesion and professionalism. Limit text to essential points, using bullet points or short phrases to keep slides uncluttered and easy to read.

Visual elements such as images, graphs, and charts can enhance understanding and engagement, but use them sparingly and ensure they support your message. Keep transitions and animations subtle to avoid distracting from your content. Practice your presentation to ensure smooth delivery and proper timing.

Remember to maintain eye contact with your audience, speak clearly and confidently, and use your slides as visual aids rather than reading directly from them. Finally, end with a summary slide to reinforce key points and encourage discussion or questions. By following these guidelines, you can create a PowerPoint presentation that effectively communicates your message and engages your audience.

PowerPoint presentation

Imagine that you are a practicing psychologist, and you are the featured presenter for the upcoming psychology conference. Your chosen topic centers upon factors that influence human behaviors and cognitions. In your presentation, you want to teach the audience about biological, evolutionary, and environmental factors that influence behaviors. To do this, you will need to prepare a PowerPoint to present to the audience. In your PowerPoint presentation, be sure to include the below concepts:

1. Identify ways in which the environment can both nurture and thwart mental ability.

2. Explain how nurture and nature play interactive roles in shaping behavior.

3. Summarize the effects of some of the main neurotransmitters in the brain, and list four hormones that influence behavior.

Your PowerPoint presentation must be at least eight slides in length, not including the cover slide and reference slide. In addition to your textbook, you must use a minimum of one scholarly source. Any information from an outside source that is used should be cited appropriately according to APA format. You may use the notes field in PowerPoint to expand on your ideas, if necessary, but this is not required.

Ethics of Mandated Treatment

Week 3 – Discussion 1: Ethics of Mandated Treatment

(Ethics of Mandated Treatment)

No unread replies.No replies.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

The Ethics of Mandated Treatment

Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, be certain to have read all the required resources for this week. The use of mandated, or legally coerced, treatment is widespread. Yet research demonstrating the efficacy of this type of treatment is limited, and mandating mental health treatment is one of the most contested issues in the field of psychology. To justify the continued use of mandated treatment, policymakers, practitioners, and researchers are obligated to demonstrate the effectiveness and limitations of such treatment programs.

You have been called in to consult on cases that may require mandated treatment. After reviewing the PSY699 The ethics of mandated treatment scenarios (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., File is attached choose two to discuss in your initial post. Begin your research with the required resources for this week. Using the specific situations presented in each of the scenarios you have chosen, conduct further research to help inform your recommendations for each individual. A minimum of one resource per scenario, beyond those already required for the assignment, must be included in your initial post.

In your post, construct clear and concise arguments using evidence-based psychological concepts and theories to present your recommendations as to whether or not treatment should be mandated for the individuals in each of the scenarios. As you write your recommendations, be certain to provide insights into the following questions.

  • What are the ethical principles and implications raised by legally mandating clients into treatment?
  • What evidence exists regarding the effectiveness of treatment with and without coercion for this type of situation?
  • What would be the challenges in evaluating the effectiveness of mandated treatment?
  • How might mandated treatment impact your clinical decision making as the mental health professional assigned to these cases?
  • What client factors might limit or augment the potential benefits of treatment if it were mandated?

Integrating concepts from your research and the required readings, offer insights across different content domains as to why you have reached these conclusions. Explain how you used the APA Ethical Code of Conduct to guide your decisions. Evaluate the generalizability of your specific research findings to the situations presented and provide a rationale as to why this research supports your recommendations.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY : FINAL RESEARCH

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY : FINAL RESEARCH

(ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY : FINAL RESEARCH)

An annotated bibliography is a comprehensive list of sources on a specific topic, accompanied by brief descriptions or evaluations of each source. It serves to provide a summary and assessment of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources used in a research project.

In constructing a final annotated bibliography, start by listing each source in the required citation style (e.g., APA, MLA) followed by a concise paragraph that includes:

  1. Summary: Briefly outline the main arguments, findings, or topics covered in the source.
  2. Evaluation: Assess the source’s credibility, reliability, and relevance to your research.
  3. Reflection: Explain how the source contributes to your understanding of the topic or supports your research question.

Organize your annotated bibliography alphabetically or thematically, depending on your preference or the requirements of your project. This compilation demonstrates the depth and breadth of your research and aids in identifying key sources for further investigation. Be sure to adhere to any specific guidelines provided by your instructor or publication.

Assignment 3: Final Project Annotated Bibliography

Craft a research question on the topic you selected in your first discussion question post. Then locate at least five articles from peer-reviewed journals that pertain to your question that will be used to write the introduction section of your research proposal.

Submit these five citations in the form of an APA-style reference page. Under each citation, write one paragraph summarizing the main points of the article. As you read your articles, keep the following questions at hand; these will help you generate the information about each article.

    • What were the topic/research questions being investigated?

    • How was the study conducted (participants, materials, procedure, etc.)?

    • What did the results reveal?

    • How might these methodological considerations affect the research findings and the conclusions drawn from them?

  • How does this article fit in with your paper? How did it influence your own ideas about your paper?

Based on your reading of the literature, what do you expect to find?

Include a hypothesis and a title page for your submission

Empowering Vulnerable Communities

Empowering Vulnerable Communities: Program Proposal

Vulnerable Population Summary and Proposed Program

(Empowering Vulnerable Communities)

Vulnerable Population Summary and Proposed Program

The first of your two written assignments for the course will  provide a beginning framework that you will utilize in the development  of your
Final Project: a proposal for a community-based  program in your area. For this first written assignment, you will  select one of the vulnerable groups identified in the text that will  serve as your target population of interest throughout the duration of  your next written assignment and Final Project.

Select one among the following groups from Chapter 1:

  • Vulnerable mothers and children
  • Abused individuals
  • Chronically ill and disabled people
  • People diagnosed with HIV/AIDS
  • People diagnosed with mental conditions
  • Suicide- and homicide-liable people
  • People affected by alcohol and substance abuse
  • Indigent and homeless people
  • Immigrants and refugees
  • Groups for special consideration (you may propose a different vulnerable population at the consent of the instructor)

Once you have selected a group of interest, write a three page paper that covers the following:

  • Discuss the impact that at least two of the factors below have on the vulnerability of your chosen group:
    • Age
    • Gender
    • Culture/Ethnicity
    • Income
  • Analyze the intersection of social, political, and economic factors affecting vulnerability (must address all three factors).
  • Draft the design of a new model program, not currently existent  within your community. Provide a two- to- three paragraph statement that  introduces your proposed community program. This section is tentative  and might change as you conduct more research. At a minimum, however,  items to address should include:
  • An explanation of the issues and risk factors experienced by the selected population.
  • An evaluation of the health needs of the group and a proposed  continuum of care level (preventive, treatment, or long-term care) based  on the group’s issues, risk factors, and needs.  Justify the proposed  level with supportive research/evidence.
  • A description of one to two proposed services your program will include.

Your assignment should be a minimum of three pages in length  (excluding title and reference pages), and should include a minimum of  three scholarly sources cited according to APA guidelines as outlined in  the Ashford Writing Center.
