Discussion: Nursing Informatics Competencies

Today’s fast-paced health care environment demands nurses to be skilled not only in their clinical practice or specialty area but in the use of technology tools that improve practice and lead to better patient care. Basic and advanced technology competencies are required and expected as technology increasingly touches and changes the job of every nurse. Numerous organizations, including the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), have developed nurse-specific technology competencies. The challenge for nurses is to identify both needs and training opportunities.

In this Discussion, you identify the role informatics plays in your professional responsibilities. You pinpoint personal gaps in skills and knowledge and then develop a plan for self-improvement.

To prepare:

  • Review Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice in this week’s Learning Resources, focusing on the different functional areas it describes. Consider which areas relate to your current nursing responsibilities or to a position you held in the past. For this Discussion, identify one or two of the most relevant functional areas.
  • Review the list of competencies recommended by the TIGER Initiative. Identify at least one skill in each of the main areas (basic computer competencies, information literacy competencies, and information management competencies) that is pertinent to your functional area(s) and in which you need to strengthen your abilities. Consider how you could improve your skills in these areas and the resources within your organization that might provide training and support.

Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder with both genetic and environmental factors influencing its development. At its core lies dysregulation in neurotransmitter systems, particularly dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin. Dopamine dysfunction, especially in the mesolimbic pathway, is strongly associated with positive symptoms like hallucinations and delusions. Glutamate abnormalities, particularly hypofunction of the NMDA receptor, contribute to cognitive deficits seen in schizophrenia. Structural brain abnormalities, including enlarged ventricles and reduced gray matter volume, are also observed.

Genetic predisposition plays a significant role, with heritability estimates around 80%. Several susceptibility genes have been identified, implicating processes such as synaptic function, neurodevelopment, and immune response. Environmental factors such as prenatal stress, urban upbringing, and substance abuse during adolescence can increase vulnerability.

Moreover, epigenetic modifications, alterations in brain connectivity, and neuroinflammation have been implicated. The interplay between genetic predisposition and environmental stressors likely disrupts neurodevelopmental processes, leading to the onset of symptoms in early adulthood. Understanding these multifaceted biological underpinnings is crucial for developing more effective treatments for schizophrenia.

Please read Asian Americans Respond to Pew: We’re Not Your Model Minority, which discusses several issues related to drawing conclusions about racial groups. For example, it specifically presents “Asian Americans,” a category that often includes over 45 distinct ethnicities speaking over 100 language dialects.

Next, review the Pew Research Center’s Chapter 3: Demographic & Economic Data, by Race. Scroll down to the College Completion Rate by Race/Ethnicity, 1964-2012 chart, which shares the data for one of the social trends regarding Asian Americans. Then, describe what the data says about the trend for Asian Americans.

Next, evaluate at least one reason these broad racial categories are useful and at least one reason why these broad categories are problematic.

Ethnic Group Evaluation

By the mid-twentieth century, the European immigrant groups described in Week One had combined to form a White racial majority in the United States. Today, Blacks, Indigenous Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and non-white Europeans interact with the White majority in a system of race that can be broadly described as comprising Whites and non-whites, Whites and racial minorities, or Whites and people of color. While unique ethnic groups share a culture in which ethnic conflict is present, including pressures to assimilate, the broader culture also celebrates the unique culture of many ethnic groups in America.

Write a paper in which you evaluate a selected major ethnic group in the United States. Please, elaborate on the following points in your essay:

  • Select and describe one of the following ethnic groups:
    • Black Americans
    • Hispanic Americans
    • Asian Americans
    • Indigenous Americans
    • White Americans
  • Examine the history of this group in the United States, including the following:
    • Immigration
    • Contact with other ethnic groups
    • Assimilation or pluralism, and its connection to the group’s contact with other ethnic groups
    • Conflict with other ethnic groups
  • Provide an example of a widely-held myth or misconception about this ethnic group. How do we know this is a myth? Why is this myth so difficult to abandon?

 

Your paper must be three to four pages in length, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Include separate title and reference pages (neither of which counts towards the three-page requirement). In addition to the required readings, use at least two scholarly sources.
