Peer Response

According to Barnett, Behnke, Rosenthal, and Koocher (2007), counselors, at some point in time, are confronted with a wide range of ethical dilemmas and may be unsure of how to proceed in some situations. There are different approaches used by counselors when faced with an ethical dilemma (Dalen, 2006).  In regards to an ethical dilemma, counselors and clients, according to the American Counseling association (2014, A.1.c.), should devise a plan that will promise success and are consistent with the abilities and developmental level of the client. Also, in regards to the ethical dilemma, the counselor should inform the client there are strict ethical standards regarding client confidentiality. The counselor has the responsibility to protect the confidential information of the client (American Counseling Association, 2014, B.1.c.). Also, according to the American Counseling Association (2014), “counselors should act to avoid harm to the client” (A.4.a. p.4). The counselor, according to the American Counseling Association (2014, Section I), should take steps to resolve the ethical dilemma, and should strive to resolve the ethical dilemma with direct and open communication with the client. If the counselor is unable to resolve the ethical dilemma, the counselor should consult with their supervisor and their colleagues (American Counseling Association, 2014, Section I).   Client Case:  In the ethical dilemma involving Jim, I would have his blood alcohol level tested to see if his blood alcohol level is over the legal limit. Then I would inform Jim that since he has been drinking, that I could not let him drive to work and then I would confiscate his keys. Then I would explain to Jim, since he has been drinking I would call a cab for him to take him home, since I cannot get in touch with his parents.

Unlocking Healthcare Synergy

Unlocking Healthcare Synergy: Effective Interdisciplinary Collaboration

“Unlocking Healthcare Synergy: Effective Interdisciplinary Collaboration”

Effective interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare is pivotal for enhancing patient outcomes and optimizing resource utilization. By fostering synergy among various healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, and social workers, a comprehensive approach to patient care can be achieved. Interdisciplinary collaboration promotes holistic assessments, personalized treatment plans, and streamlined communication, ensuring that all aspects of a patient’s well-being are addressed.

This synergy enables healthcare teams to leverage diverse perspectives, skills, and knowledge to tackle complex medical challenges more efficiently. Psychology Assignment4

Psychology Assignment4

(Psychology Assignment4)

Application: Trust and Power

It probably comes as no surprise that two other important but distinct factors in conflict and conflict resolution are trust and power. You will consider them both in this Application Assignment. Trust is defined differently, depending on the theory or discipline defining it, or on the people involved in any particular conflict. Chapter 5 in your textbook adopts this definition: Trust is “an individual’s belief in, and willingness to act on the basis of, the works, actions, and decisions of another” (McAllister, 1995, p. 25; Lewicki, McAllister, and Bies, 1998, p. 440). It identifies three elements that contribute to level of trust, including individual dispositions, situational contexts, and relationship elements. The focus of the chapter is on the relationship aspect of trust.

Power, as is pointed out in the text, is directly or indirectly inherent in all conflict, in a variety of ways. The author adopts a view that power is “the ability to make things happen” (Follet [1924] (1973); Coleman, 214, p. 139) and presents a number of distinctions to help emphasize and promote that view. He also discusses personal and environmental components of power that interact to affect your behavior, actions, and orientations related to power. It should be noted that power always is in play when there is a disparity of it in a conflict situation. Even when a third party conducts a fair, impartial process that treats the parties equally, the power realities outside of the mediation room remain in effect and, consequently, impact the dynamics of the process. Thus, a party with greater power often has alternatives to reaching an agreement outside of the mediation process, making compromise and a move toward agreement less likely.

Question description

Theories in nursing help nurses as a guide in everyday practice. Following a concept in practice helps me to develop an overall view and better understanding of the patient, the disease, and the environment he or she is in. I can orientate and focus on these aspects and develop a goal for my patient. Each situation in practice requires different methods and approaches of care. As nurses we must always act in the best interest for our patient. We should borrow theories from other professionals if it ensures best quality care for our patient. I believe that Madeleine Leininger’s Theory on Cultural Care and Diversity is the groundwork and foundation of care for the future. As the world is changing around us, the culture is changing as well. Every nurse must be familiar with Leininger’s principles.

This class was very good and I learned a lot of new insights on principles in nursing, especially in theories of a more holistic approach. I enjoyed reading this book as it also described the background of the different nursing theorists. Betty Neuman’s and Margaret Newmann’s conceptions stood out to me. Both theoreticians experienced how to live with someone who is suffering from chronic disease in their own home. I found that these two ladies really understood the life of people with long-lasting sickness as their thoughts and ideas of caring and goal achievement reflected in their theories. Certainly, other nursing pioneers have very helpful theories as well. Betty Neuman’s father was diagnosed with renal disease and Margaret Newman’s mother suffered of ALS (Smith & Parker, 2015). I value the ideas and biographies of these two amazing ladies because my ten year old son is chronically ill. This is the reason why I’m so passionate about renal patients. This class really opened my heart and eyes that I need to move forward and continue with my career focused on pediatric nephrology. I love working with pediatric renal patient as I learned so much during my son’s journey. I would call myself a more of a spiritual person. I found out first hand that by using holistic approaches in nursing results in very positive effects on the patient. Some of us may have struggled with Martha Rogers’s ideas on the Unitary Being, Madeleine Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care and Diversity, Jean Watson’s outstanding Theory on Human Caring, Margarete Newman’s Theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness or Parse’s Theory of Human Caring. Even though the lecture required a lot of interpretation, the long hours of reading and research were worth the time for me. I gained knowledge of so many interesting new insights and ideas of caring from this lecture. I always enjoyed reading the discussion post to learn what your concepts and ways of caring are. In nursing we always have to look forward, be flexible and expand our knowledge. Following these principles will help us to act in our patient’s best interest.

While my son still struggles of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), I have been on both sides. Caring as a nurse and seeing my son receiving care as a patient. I’m a very holistic person and used many different approaches of helping my son. I found out that nurses who give the best care are the ones who take time to understand and show compassion. I can always tell while my son is receiving care if the nurse really has her heart in caring or if it is just a job. My son almost passed away at the age of three as he fought a very hard battle with his kidney disease. It was hard to watch, thankfully at this time we were at Denver’s children’s hospital. I’m sure you can all guess which amazing nursing theorist thoughts and ideas reflect on the patient’s care process there. Jean Watson! Today my son is ten years old and despite his diagnoses with this difficult disease, he is living a normal life. This is only possible because kindhearted nurses treated my son as a whole person and looked behind the disease. We all worked together in assisting him to find meaning and focus on life goals. I could write another page of what my son went through but I’d rather focus on today as I’m overjoyed on how good he is doing.

This class is almost over now, I wish each of you the best for your future. As the peaceful light is given to us with the Christmas spirit, go on and spread it for your patients. You may be there to shine for them and change their lives for the better. I would like to share one of my favorite quotes from Paulo Coelho with you, “Warriors of light are not perfect. Their beauty lies in accepting this facts and still desiring to grow and learn.” (Coelho & Costa, 2014).

Take care, good luck on your journey in earning your bachelorette degrees in nursing and Merry Christmas, Christine

Protecting Children From Media.

Assignment 2: Protecting Children From Media.

(Protecting Children From Media.)

For his 10th birthday, Greg was given a handheld videogame system. His parents allowed him to pick any two games. They knew the games might contain violence, because there was a violence rating sign posted on the games, but rationalized that they were only games and other kids play them. Greg would quickly finish dinner and run up to his room to play his games.

His parents were pleased to observe that Greg enjoyed their present so much. After a week, his parents noticed that he wasn’t turning off the videogames at bedtime, and had begun turning homework in late. He was up so late playing that he would not get up for school without argument. His parents decided that enough was enough and took the video games away. Greg threw temper tantrums and persuaded his parents to buy him a computer after convincing them that it was necessary to keep up at school. Greg soon returned to the same pattern of behavior where he spent long hours and late nights at the computer. This time, his parents felt a false sense of security that he was doing his homework. One day, his curious parents decided to scan the computer history to see what Web sites Greg was browsing. To their horror, they discovered that Greg was spending many hours online playing interactive, sometimes violently graphic, games on the Internet. He was also chatting with other “gamers”. Before confronting Greg about his behavior, his mother and father agreed to investigate what types of intervention strategies might be available within their community. They have come to you, a behavioral consultant, for advice.

Click to Read the Kaiser Family Foundation Study: Generation M2. Media in the Lives of 8- to 18- Year Olds.

Describe the issue of exposure to videogame violence in today’s society as related to Greg’s situation. Explore issues such as:

  1. Prevalence (e.g., age, gender, racial diversity, etc.)
  2. Given Greg’s developmental level, what are possible dangers of exposure to media violence? Be sure to address this in the context of his cognitive and socioemotional development.
  3. Risk and protective factors, including predisposition to violence (e.g., are all children who play violent videogames likely to become more aggressive? What protective factors might mitigate the possible outcomes for Greg?
  4. Discuss the possible outcomes if Greg’s behavior continues unchecked.
  5. Discuss types of intervention strategies you would expect his parents to find at a community level, such as in community centers, schools, and social service agencies, to assist children like Greg who are at risk due to ongoing exposure to media violence.
  6. What would be a good plan to recommend to Greg’s parents?
  7. Compare the dangers of exposure to videogame violence with other forms of violence. What are similarities and differences between videogame violence exposure and the other type of violence you chose to compare?
  8. What are the costs of videogame violence to the family and the community and society at large and the other form of violence you chose for comparison?

By Wednesday, February 26, 2014, format your paper in APA (6th edition) style, using information you learned in your textbook and from the Kaiser Family Foundation Study to support your response.  Your paper should be between 4 and 5 pages in length. Include a cover page, abstract, and reference list, which should cite any information used from your assigned textbook, Kaiser Family Foundation reference, and other sources such as online course content.

Analyzing Literary Elements

Analyzing Literary Elements: Short Story Interpretation

(Analyzing Literary Elements)

By the due date assigned, attach the rough draft of your essay as a Microsoft Word document to the Discussion Area. By the end of the week, comment on at least two of your classmate’s submissions using the peer review questions provided below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your instructor will assign 3-5 short stories for the class to read and discuss this week. Check the Week 4 Announcement for a list of the assigned stories. You must choose one of these stories to earn credit on the assignment.

Compose an analytical essay of at least 1,200 words in which you offer an interpretation of a literary element in one of the assigned short stories. Write your analysis focusing on one of the following elements in one of the assigned stories:

  • Character
  • Theme
  • Symbolism
  • Imagery
  • Setting

Start by selecting one of the short stories assigned by your instructor. Brainstorm to identify the literary element that you would like to explore in the story. Choose from character, theme, symbolism, imagery, or setting. Then, develop a thesis that offers a specific interpretation of this element. If you have trouble coming up with a thesis, contact your instructor, who will help you. Do not do any outside research at this point. When finished, the draft should be at least 1,200 words (approximately four double-spaced pages).

Tips for the Essay

  1. Open your introduction with an engaging opener, such as a question, quote from the story, or interesting idea. Then, connect to the short story and mention the title and the author. End your introduction with a thesis statement that interprets one literary element of the story (such as theme, symbolism, or characterization).
  2. The body paragraphs should support your thesis. Present specific aspects of the short story that help to illustrate your points. Make sure to quote from the story and analyze specific lines that support your argument.
  3. Include a strong concluding paragraph that summarizes your main points and explains the significance of the thesis.

APA Reminder

Use APA style for formatting the essay and for source citations. Begin with a title page. Include a running header, and use proper font and spacing. End with a separate references page. Refer to the Week 1 lecture on avoiding plagiarism for an APA essay template and additional resources.
