Community health nurses can apply the strategies of cultural competence by being culturally aware. Nurses should start by assessing the patient to determine the person’s knowledge and beliefs before providing care. This will give the nurse insight as to how to proceed with education and treatment.

An example of a nurse practicing cultural preservation would to acknowledge the use of traditional healers within the Hispanic community. Latinos term illnesses as either “hot” or “cold” and treat such illnesses with herbs or other measures, such as massage on the affected area or steam baths. The treatment of such illnesses is termed cultural accommodation and should be encouraged if these forms of treatment have been proven harmless. An example of cultural repatterning would be for the nurse to work with the patient to change a person’s behavior(s) that would be harmful to him/her. Cultural brokering is recognized as connecting differing cultural backgrounds so that a change in behavior can be made to produce a successful outcome. Barriers to applying any of these strategies is a lack of understanding on the nurse’s part and recognizing that family plays a major role in influencing behavior. For example, research shows that Latino adolescents that battle substance abuse are more successful with their treatment and have better outcomes with family support. This is due to, in part, because Hispanic families rely on the entire family (aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc.) as a unified support system (Burrow-Sanchez). However, some barriers to Latinos obtaining treatment could be a lack of access to needed healthcare/treatment, language barriers, etc.

Therefore, it is very important for nurses to be culturally aware and practice patience and understanding while maintaining respect when it comes to providing care for people that come from different cultures.

A community health nurse has a great challenge in applying cultural competence because they see and treat such a variety of culturally different people. It is key for the community health nurse to assess their own beliefs and be aware that they may greatly vary from the people in their care. Being open minded and setting aside personal biases while implementing the four strategies of cultural competence is needed to achieve success (Maurer & Smith, 2013).

Midwives work in facilities, but also work in the community as well assisting with birthing in homes. Cultural preservation can be seen by only using a female midwife in the home birth of a Muslim baby as well as respecting that the father will most likely not be present for the birth. Cultural accommodation example would be to allow a mother soon after giving birth to eat a ratb, which is a type of date. This is thought to help promote excellent breast milk for the baby. Cultural repatterning would be discussing that the tradition of placing khakhe shafaa, a type of mud, in the infant’s mouth after birth as unhealthy. Cultural brokering involves another person of the persons culture to help negotiate between the community health nurse and the patient. In the case of the khakhe shafaa, there is an additional practice of using Euphrates water in the baby’s mouth. Using someone based in the same culture will increase the trust level and possible help repattern the behavior that is unhealthy for the infant (Ahlul Bayt Digital Islamic Library Project [Islamic Library], 2018).

Another example of cultural accommodation would be to show support of fasting during Ramadan. Unfortunately, if the Muslim client is diabetic and being seen in a community setting, the nurse may recommend monitoring blood glucose levels and “breaking the fast” if the blood sugar levels were to drop too low. This may create a barrier for applying this strategy (Rassool, 2015).

      • Example: Assessing “Bobby,” I would first observe his motor development using an Anecdotal Record Form.  In a different sitting, I would observe his cognitive development using an Event Sampling Form.

    For the assignment, you will need to include:

    3. A one- page summary of the observation(s).  In this summary, include:
      • How you feel the observation went and why.

As I approach the end of my bachelor program I am more stressed than when I started. I say this because there are major projects to be completed along with projects for this course. While it is stressed inducing, I do somewhat feel a sense of relief that the end is near.

As I juggle my capstone course along with this class, work, and family, I find going for a walk, excerise( when I can), listening to music, cooking, or playing with my 20month old relieving. Depending on the day music can be over stimulating if I am mentally exhausted. On those days of over stimulation, I find a long warm shower relaxes those muscles and give a refreshed feeling.

Many may shut down and become really stressed and unable to focus or put words on paper. I am the opposite. I have found that having a deadline for a project gives me inspiration and motivation to have it completed. I find it strange but the stressed caused by knowing the deadline is fast approaching creates those creative thoughts and inspiration. Taking a warm shower (relaxes those muscles), laying in bed (further relaxation)with my tablet, seem to work for me rather than sitting in front of a computer.

When students have a deadline and are feeling stressed, what can they do to relax their mind and body to accomplish what they need to do? Which relaxation strategies would be most successful to achieve that outcome?

I find that taking a walk with my girls always relaxes me. I enjoy the time with my family and the fresh air and the sounds of nature. I usually work on my classes in the evening when I get home from work, but many times I will take that walk first. It clears my head from all of the stress that had built up throughout my work day. As far as deadlines are concerned, I find that time management and preparation is very important in order to be a successful college student. Relaxation techniques can only do so much, but making a plan or calendar and sticking by it is can help you avoid having to do too much at once and the stress that comes with procrastination. I’m not always perfect with it, but I do realize the importance of planning and time management and try to utilize it to the best of my ability in order to cut down on stress.

A key element of social-emotional development during infancy and toddlerhood is the establishment of bonds of attachment. A child’s temperament can influence the nature of attachment with caregivers. For instance, an infant’s difficult temperament might make it more likely that he or she will develop an insecure attachment to the caregiver. If caregivers receive sufficient social support, thereby establishing a “goodness of fit” between temperament and environment (i.e., parenting), they can overcome some of the challenges of raising a difficult child.

The child’s temperament and the caregiver’s parenting style work in tandem to affect the child’s social-emotional and cognitive development. Caregivers who exhibit open displays of warmth and affection and who respond to their children’s needs in a timely manner (thereby acknowledging that each child has some influence on other family members) are likely to socialize their children so that they feel positively about themselves, learn to trust, and are secure with their caregivers. As you examine other parenting styles, think about how the level of caregiver responsiveness affects infant attachment.

Suicide and euthanasia are extremely sensitive topics for the majority of individuals including health care workers. According to the Christian belief, it is considered a sinful act and therefore goes against Christian beliefs. Meilaender (2013) states that “Christians have held that suicide is morally wrong because they have seen it in a contradiction of our nature as creatures, an unwillingness to receive life moment by moment from the hand of God without ever regarding it as simply “our” possession” (Meilaender, 2013). He goes on to say that our life is not something we own and that by committing suicide we are essentially playing the role of creator. We need to remember that life is a gift from God and to take one’s own life is a selfish act and disrespectful to God for the gift of life he gave to us.

Suicide and euthanasia are controversial topics. I don’t whole heartedly agree with Meilaender. I believe that if a patient has a chronic illness that is causing them to have a very poor quality of life and/or chronic pain, then that person should be allowed to decide if they want to carry on with life living that way. What a bleak existence it would be. My husband and I have had numerous discussions about this very topic. We both agree that if either one of us were extremely ill, we should find a way to put that person out of their misery. On the flip side, if a healthy person were to take their own life, then I totally agree with Meilaender and that person is selfish and not following in the footsteps of God.

Based on Meilaender’s (2013) perspective of suicide, it is morally wrong because there is an unwillingness to receive the life given, by our creator, moment by moment.  Suicide
is not God’s will, it is the irrational desire of a man to be in control and a repercussion of sin with man acting as the creator, instead of the created.  Meilanender (2013) contends that life is not “our” possession, nor ours to take whether by suicide or euthanasia.  I appreciate his comparison of our lives to being characters in a story that God created while God gives us the freedom to act according to the nature he provided.  However, I don’t believe that it was ever God’s intent to allow us the freedom to rationally take a life by suicide.

This is what we are exploring.

You will pick a theorist who interests you, it does not have to be a nurse theorist. You may also choose from other disciplines such as: behavioral, leadership, business, education, technology.

You will become the theorist immersing yourself in the writings from the earliest mentioned to the most current.

As you read, look at how you (taking on the persona of the theorist) developed the theory.

In the first stage, theorizing occurs. This is where you, as the theorist, identify the concepts of what nursing is and is not. Perhaps you questioned what concepts were guiding those in nursing practice and then started to question your role. You started asking yourself, “Where am I in nursing, and where the profession is going? Is there some overarching concept that guides the professional in his or her practice?” This is where you recognize that a theory is needed.

In the second stage, syntax is developed. This is where you will define the terms. Look for changing definitions of terms. Consider, for example, Jean Watson. She starts by defining the word “caring.” Within the last ten years she has refined her terminology changing the term caring to caritas. This demonstrates a growth and maturation from decades of research she and other scholars did to produce the theory of caring.

The third stage is theory testing. Defined as the phenomena behind the theory that are exposed through research. The definitions of terms are refined. The theorists and other researchers consider whether this theory helps answer questions that arise in practice. This is where your theory is used in by a widening group of researchers. For example, graduate nursing students request the tool you developed while testing your theory.

The fourth and last stage is evaluation. This is where philosophical debate occurs as the concepts are applied through evidenced based practice in the act of providing nursing care.
