False Memories

False Memories

(False Memories)

The US legal system places a lot of importance on eyewitness memory. Most people would report that they can accurately convey what they saw in a particular situation. However, these ideas are not supported by research. Instead, research shows that memory is quite malleable and is affected by many factors. This research repeatedly demonstrates that people do not remember exactly what they experienced. This module’s experiment will show you firsthand how memory for events is not always one hundred percent accurate.

Access the CogLab demonstration False Memory. Follow the instructions to complete the demonstration to familiarize yourself with false memory. Then locate at least one research study from a peer-reviewed journal that examined how eyewitness memory can be affected by false memories.

Based on your research, respond to the following situation:

You are considered to be an expert in false memories, and a local district attorney has therefore requested your expertise on the following case:

On Tuesday, March 6, 2007, a bank was robbed in Slidell, LA. It was just after opening time, 9:04 a.m., and there were barely any customers, when a car arrived and parked in the side parking lot of the bank. Two men came out of the car and walked to the entrance. Both wore dark clothing. Upon entering the bank, they held out guns and asked for the manager. When the manager identified herself, the smaller of the two robbers ordered her to open the safe. Meanwhile, the other robber, a tall, and burley man, walked around holding his gun in his outstretched arm, and threatening the remaining employees and customers. The manager complied and the smaller robber collected all the money and valuables from the safe. After five minutes, the big robber asked if his companion was ready to go. When he was, the two ran back to their car, and drove away.

The district attorney has asked that you create a presentation about false memory and explain how it might influence this case. He asks that you specifically address the following:

  • Describe false memory and false memory experiments. Use the CogLab experiment to illustrate false memory experiments, special distracters, and normal distracters.
  • Describe at least one research study from a peer-reviewed journal that investigated how eyewitness memory can be affected by false memories.
  • Explain how false memory might influence this particular case. Use specifics from the description of the case, the CogLab experiment, and research to support your answer.
  • Using evidence from the case, the CogLab experiment, and outside research, justify why eyewitness testimonies should or should not carry weight in criminal proceedings.
  • Discuss any procedures which can increase or reduce the occurrence of false memories when reporting eyewitness events.

Remember, your presentation is designed to help the jury understand false memory and how it might influence the eyewitness testimony of this case. You will have ten minutes to present.

Since this is a legal case, you must include formally written slide notes (proper grammar, proper paragraphs, APA formatting, and academic tone) with research to support your claims. The presentation will be a legal document in this case, so make it worthy of being legally binding!

Develop an 5–6-slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.ppt.

Preparing For Informational Interview

Preparing For Informational Interview

(Preparing For Informational Interview)

An informational interview is a recommended tool for exploring career options. This assignment is designed to prepare you for an informational interview of a professional in the field of psychology. You will conduct this informational interview during Module 2. Here, in Module 1, you will create a script, design a list of questions, and identify the person you hope to interview. You also need to schedule the interview.

In M3 Assignment 2 LASA 1, you will submit a written account of the informational interview you conducted with the psychology professional.

You will ask the interviewee to describe the educational and training steps (the career paths) he or she took to reach the current position. You will also ask the interviewee to describe, in some detail, the job responsibilities associated with the position. The interview must be at least thirty minutes long. Ideally, it should be conducted in person. If that is not feasible, a phone interview is adequate.

For this assignment, do the following:

  • Begin to prepare for this informational interview by identifying the professional you plan to interview. Ideally, the professional should be engaged in a career that you hope to pursue. (You may want to identify a second candidate in case your initial choice is unable to complete the interview with you.) This professional may work in your local area, but that is not necessary. If you cannot identify a professional easily, ask your friends and family if they know anyone who works in the field of psychology. You may also want to phone your local community mental health center or social services agency to ask for names and contact information of potential professionals you could interview. Contact your facilitator for guidance if you have difficulty in identifying someone.
  • Provide the following identifying information about the individual you have selected:
    • The name
    • The job title (licensed psychologist, social worker, or case manager)
    • The level of education (a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree)
    • A description of job responsibilities or day-to-day tasks
    • The type of license, if applicable
    • The state of residence and practice
    • The e-mail address or phone number
  • Develop a list of at least fifteen questions to ask in your informational interview. Research possible questions to include using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet. Refer to the “Job Resources” document to do an Internet search using the search terms “informational interview questions” in order to find suggested questions. Be sure to put them into your own words for the purpose of this assignment and to give credit to your source by using in-text citations and a reference list in APA format.
  • Ask the interviewee about his or her work, academic preparation, and advice. In addition, include the interviewee’s answers to questions on the following topics:
    • The experience, skills, and knowledge necessary for success in a career in psychology or in graduate school
    • Relevant professional organizations
    • His or her views on professional ethics and academic integrity
    • The role of psychological research in his or her work
    • His or her greatest challenges and rewards
    • His or her reasons for choosing the field
  • Develop a script (word-for-word written statement) that you will use during the warm-up (meet-and-greet) portion of the interview. What will you say to the interviewee when you meet him or her? What will you do? For example, will you shake the person’s hand and introduce yourself? Include small talk of a professional nature that will serve as an introduction and explanation of the purpose of the interview. Demonstrate in your script your ability to interact professionally and effectively in a professional environment.
  • This assignment is preparatory work for the interview to be conducted later in this course. Do not conduct the interview for this assignment.

Submission Details:

  • Write a 1–2-page paper in Microsoft Word format. Apply APA standards to cite sources. Use the following file-naming convention: M1_A3_Lastname_Firstname.doc.

Research Project-Career Investigation

Research Project-Career Investigation

(Research Project-Career Investigation)

Question description

RESEARCH PROJECT –Career Investigation (Social work/criminal justice)

Length: 12-16 pages.

Overview:

The remainder of the semester will focus on a major research project. This project will be broken up into parts to make it manageable and keep you on track.

Complete the assignment fully and follow all directions for page length requirement for each part of the project.

Assignment Description:

For this assignment, you will complete a major research project in five partsYou will investigate different aspects of your (future) career field, analyze the process of becoming a professional in that field, interview someone currently working in that field, keep a detailed annotated bibliography, and reflect on your research process.

Each part of the project will have specific guidelines for you to follow. Pay close attention to the guidelines for each specific part of the assignment.

Although you will complete this project in different parts—the final draft needs to combine all parts into a single document. Review the student samples for examples of what the finished product should look like.

Here are some general guidelines regarding your research:

  • You should synthesize information you learn during the research process.
  • Do not simply cut-and-paste a collage of source material—that does not demonstrate any critical thinking.
  • All sources should be discussed, properly integrated, and cited appropriately both in-text and in the annotated bibliography.
  • Do not use a quote more than two lines in length.
  • The majority of the work should be written by you—that means you must have something to say (again—no collage of what others have said).
  • YOU MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 5 SOURCES (of which only 2 can be websites)

**READ and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS for each of the parts of the project listed below.**

Part 1: Research Report:   20%

Part 2: Process Analysis  20%

Part 3: Interview:     20%

Part 4: Annotated bibliography:     35%

Part 5: Reflection:       5%

Total:   100%

Below are the instructions for each part of the research project.

PART 1—Research Report 20%

Length: 2-4 pages

Instructions:

Part 1of this research project is a research report. Don’t let the name fool you—you are not simply reporting information—that does not require much critical thought!

Think of Part 1 as an essay in which you will have the dual purpose of both informing and arguing a position regarding your future career. You will provide some history and background information about the career field (the informative part) and argue who is the most significant person is in that field OR who you think is significant but does not receive enough recognition for their contributions to the field. You need to back up your claims with evidence to prove your points.

Remember that you will learn a lot through research and it is vitally important to keep track of your sources so that it is clear what information came from you and what came from a source. You have to figure out what you have to say about the information—form your own thoughts. You are NOT just reporting here—you must have something to say!

Part 1 criteria:

  • information on the history and background of the career field from its beginning (this should not take up more than 1 page of the 2 page minimum)
  • argue who is the most significant person is in that field OR who you think is significant but does not receive enough recognition for their contributions to the field
  • clearly distinguish the thoughts/ideas/words of others from your own by discussing and integrating sources appropriately
  • cite all sources correctly both in-text and in the annotated bibliography
  • follow an essay structure (introduction with thesis statement, body paragraphs, conclusion)
  • maintain a formal tone and use third person point of view only
  • avoid major grammatical or spelling mistakes

PART 2—Process Analysis 20%

Length: 3-5 pages(Research Project-Career Investigation)

Overview:

Process analysis is a technique that explains the steps or sequence involved in doing something which satisfies our need to learn as well as our curiosity about how the world works. There are two types of process analysis: directional and informational. Informational process analysis goes beyond recipe or formula to explain. Your purpose is not only to explain a process but also to convince the reader that the process you explain is the best way to do what you describe—this involves analysis and argument.

Instructions:

For Part 2, you will write an informational process analysis which should go beyond a simple “how to” in order to help your readers understand how something happens even though they won’t actually follow the steps outlined. You will have the dual purpose of analysis and argument. When analyzing the process, you also need to convince your audience that the process you describe is the best process to take to reach the goal of becoming a __________ in this particular career field.

You will write an informational process analysis explaining how a student of ___________ becomes a successful ______________.

For this essay, you should continue to develop a formal academic tone and use third person point of view to help establish that tone. All of your writing is based on your perspective but you must learn how to present your perspective without using “I” or “you” to do it.

Example of a thesis:

In order to become a successful radiology technician one should first complete the radiology program at North Central Texas College, then work for Advanced Medical Imaging of North Texas, and finally get promoted to Director of Operations.

*The thesis states the subject (steps to become a Rad Tech) and the point of view (specifics to be a successful one).

*Note that the thesis lists three major steps. Not every small step should be included in the thesis statement only the major points to be covered in the essay should be in the thesis.

This essay should be organized, logical, formal, and persuasive. No one wants to read an essay explaining how to be a mediocre nurse or teacher for example. Your essay should also persuade readers to follow your process to become a successful nurse or teacher (or whatever profession you’re discussing).

Part 2 Criteria:

  • Provide clear, logical, well organized informational process analysis
  • Process is explained and is convincing to the reader
  • Include a clear and focused thesis statement
  • Exhibit a formal academic tone—third person only
  • Meet the length requirement of 3-5 full pages
  • Format sources correctly both in text and in the annotated bibliography

PART 3—Interview 20%

Length: 2 ½ -4 pages

Instructions:(Research Project-Career Investigation)

For Part 3, you will interview someone currently working and/or teaching in the career field. You will need to develop at least 10 interview questions for them to answer. The questions should be thought provoking and interesting and require detailed answers. The person you interview should not be related to you.

For Part 3 you should include:

  • A brief one paragraph introduction of the person (their credentials, experience, demographics)
  • Your 10 (minimum) questions and the person’s answers in Q: A: format (see example)
  • INCLUDE CONTACT INFORMATION—PHONE OR EMAIL for the person being interviewed

Format Examplelo:

Your interview section should be formatted with the question and answer clearly marked like the example below.

Q1: When hanging a show in your gallery space, what is your process for deciding where and how to display the artwork?

A: First, I study all the pieces to determine if there are any complimentary themes, colors, and sizes. I have this

space projected in my mind and I play around with different combinations trying to visualize what will work best together. When you walk in the gallery, what will be the first thing someone sees? What will the focal piece of the show? I try to visualize these things first before I even start physically moving the art around.

PART 4—Annotated bibliography 35%

Length: 4-6 pages

Instructions:

For Part 4, you will submit a detailed annotated bibliography. The annotated bibliography is the works cited page for this project—it should include ALL sources used. Each source should have a proper MLA citation, a 4-6 sentence summary, and a 2-3 sentence evaluation of the source (how useful and/or credible the source is and how it will fit into your project).

This will require a significant amount of effort and is an integral part of the research process.

AS SOON AS YOU BEGIN YOUR RESEARCH, YOU SHOULD BEGIN THE ANNOTATED BIBIOGRAPHY. This is something you work on as you go to document your research process and help you to keep track of all your sources.

Part 4 should:

  • Include at least 5 sources minimum (10 max)
  • Provide MLA documentation for each source
  • Include a brief summary of the source IN YOUR OWN WORDS
  • Explain the usefulness of the source to your project
  • Be formatted exactly like the example provided
  • All entries should appear in alphabetical order

IMPORTANT: The summary of the source should be ALL YOUR OWN WORDS. The point of this is for you to analyze and synthesize the information you find (demonstrate critical thinking skills) as well as document your research process.

PART 5  5%

Length: 1 page

Instructions:(Research Project-Career Investigation)

For Part 5, you will reflect on your research process and what you learned while completing this project. Think about things like: Do you have a deeper understanding of your career field? Of the research process? What led you to that understanding? What was the most difficult part of the process? What insights did you gain? What did you learn? Etc.

This is the only part of the project that should be in first person. This is your personal reflection on what you learned and how you went through the process.

FINAL DRAFTPutting it all together

Here are some general guidelines for putting all the parts together to make the final draft of this project.

  • Heading should appear on first page only
  • Each page should have your last name and page number at top right
  • The entire document should be double spaced (go in and “remove space after paragraph” to make sure it is properly spaced)
  • Each part should be clearly titled (Part 1: History and Background of Nursing, Part 2: Process of Becoming A Nurse, Part 3: Interview with Alice Groves, R.N., Part4: Annotated bibliography, Part 5: Reflection)
  • Follow all MLA guidelines
  • All parts should be combined and should be submitted as one document

Rough Draft due april 26 (75% needs to be complete)

Final draft due May 3.

Group Crisis Intervention

Group Crisis Intervention

(Group Crisis Intervention)

Serving Multiple Constituencies

Due: End of Unit 9.

This assignment will walk you through the steps to create crisis response plans, which is a critical job skill for counselors of children and adolescents. Using the Group Crisis Intervention Template, you will:

  • Develop a one-time group crisis intervention plan that will help children or adolescents deal with the loss of classmates.
  • Develop a one-time group crisis intervention plan to assist their parents and other concerned community members.
  • For each intervention plan, describe how you will adapt these groups so that they are beneficial for individuals from different cultural backgrounds and are inclusive of individuals with exceptionalities.
  • Use the Group Crisis Intervention Template to complete this assignment. Follow the instructions for formatting your plan, as indicated in the template.

Counselors who work with children and adolescents rarely work only with children and adolescents! They are often asked to help with prevention efforts, consult with schools or other groups that serve children, educate parents and teachers about children’s mental health needs, and advocate for changes in communities and schools. Therefore, any counselor must understand how these multiple systems operate and must be knowledgeable about the programs and networks that support the mental health of diverse children and adolescents in the community.

For this assignment, you will describe how you would work with diverse individuals and two different constituencies by developing a group crisis intervention proposal for the Middle Valley Consortium. The intervention will include counseling components, education and prevention components, and follow-up plans to connect individuals to other programs or networks, if needed.

Your proposal is being requested because the community is still reeling from the shocking death of two middle school students, who overdosed on prescription drugs. Your proposal will include plans for holding two crisis intervention groups, one for the classmates of the deceased children and one for parents and community members who are upset by the event and concerned about the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse among children and adolescents.

Your community is diverse, so your crisis groups will include members from several different racial and ethnic backgrounds. You also have been informed that there is one middle school girl who has a hearing impairment, as do her parents, and one middle school boy affected by a motor neuron disease resulting in orthopedic impairment; he requires a wheelchair. His father is also affected by this heritable disease and requires a wheelchair. Additionally, from previous experience in the school, you know that two of your group members are medicated for ADHD.

You will implement your crisis counseling groups adapting the Group Crisis Intervention plan offered in Counseling Children, pages 610–612; however, you will tailor your plan to meet the needs of your attendees. Your proposal will include the following:

Introduction to Group Crisis Intervention

Discuss why group crisis counseling is helpful for children and adolescents who experience crises and how this meets important mental health needs. Discuss why group crisis counseling is also helpful for parents, teachers, or community members who work with children, using a systems theory perspective.

Counseling Theory

Select a counseling theory that will guide your crisis interventions and state your rationale for using it for this purpose.

Skills Required in Diverse Groups

Discuss the counseling skills and techniques, based on your selected theory, which will be genuinely helpful to both groups. How will you build and maintain rapport throughout the group? How will you ascertain that you accurately hear and sensitively respond to the group’s emotions?

Sample Group Outlines—Counseling Phase

For each group, describe the Introductory Phase, Fact Phase, Feeling Phase, and Client’s Current Symptoms Phase with brief elaborations of what you as a counselor will do or say in each phase.

Teaching Phase

The teaching phase will differ for your middle school group and your concerned parents and community members group. In addition to teaching your groups about common responses to crises, including helpful and unhelpful responses, you will need to include a prevention component to briefly address substance addictions, including why and how they develop (etiology), how they can be prevented, and how to intervene when a peer (or a child or adolescent) is suspected of using drugs, and where group members can go for further information.

Summary Phase

The summary phase will help support group members going forward. Describe how you will help develop individual or group action plans. Describe how you will inform the group of several hypothetical school or community resources where they can turn for additional help. The resources should be somewhat different for the adolescent group and the parent and community members groups. Including resources that are available in your own community as part of your resources for your groups will help prepare you for your own future!

Assuring Cultural Appropriateness for Diverse Individuals

One responsibility of counselors is to use multicultural competencies to ensure that individuals from all background benefit from our services. In group settings, this can be even more challenging due to differences among the group members. Even group members from the same race have different levels of acculturation, and so might respond to counseling strategies differently. What will you do to remain alert and responsive to needs of the group? How might you need to modify your counseling skills, techniques, and the group crisis counseling intervention to make it culturally appropriate for diverse individuals?

Assuring Appropriateness for Individuals With Exceptionalities

All individuals have the right to receive mental health services that meet their needs. How will you adapt or modify your groups so that children and adults with unique exceptionalities or disabilities can benefit as involved members? Are there legal considerations that will inform your group crisis counseling plans?

Conclusion

Briefly describe what you have learned about how counselors—particularly counselors who serve children and adolescents—need skills to influence community systems, family systems, and school systems on behalf of their clients.

Requirements

  • Prepare your paper in accordance with APA style and formatting. It should be 6–8 pages long, not counting the references and title pages. No abstract is necessary.
  • Succinctly address key points in each section of your plan. Counselors must develop plans to share with other professional that are clear and concise.
  • Your paper should have at least 4 references, including the Counseling Children textbook.
  • Use the Group Crisis Intervention template provided in the Assignment Resources.

Impact of PPACA on Nursing

Impact of PPACA on Nursing

(Impact of PPACA on Nursing)

Please Answer According The Comments. Thanks. Remember 100 Words For Each. Reference Between 2013-2018.

Comment 1

The PPACA was aimed to improve the health care system, offering affordable health insurance to more Americans, expand the Medicaid program to cover all adults that live below the poverty level, and to support innovative medical care delivery methods designed to lower the costs of health care generally (Lampert, 2009). The PPACA mandates that everyone that is legal will have health coverage in the United States or a penalty will have to be paid at the end of the year. With the influx of people now receiving healthcare, they will be seeking medical attention where in the past they would not. The increase in people seeking medical attention will result in a needed increase in nurses to take care of these patients and more training to gain more expertise and skills to be able to manage the emerging needs and diseases.

A key nursing provision is the health care workforce loan repayment program (Section 5203). This section focuses more on children. It has a focus on pediatric medical or surgical and children mental and behavioral health care. The repayment program will offer psychiatric nurses, social workers, and professional/school counselors up $35,000 a year in loan repayments for their participation in an accredited pediatric specialty residency program.  A second key provision is public health workforce recruitment and retention programs (Section 5204).  This provision is aimed at eliminating the shortage of public health agencies. This provision has offered a one third repayment of loans for an exchange of a contract of employment acceptance with a public health agency for three years. This program is offered to eligible public health or health professions.

I know my nursing career will be affected by the provisions that were listed above along with all the other provisions listed in the PPACA. Offering loan repayments will give nurses the incentive to obtain higher degrees. Recruitment and retention would likely decrease the nurse shortage by new nurses coming in and showing loyalty to the season nurses.

Comment 2(Impact of PPACA on Nursing)

The effect of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) resonates profoundly in the U.S. healthcare environment and among the public. Two key provisions of the act include: 1) Guaranteed issue prohibits insurers from denying coverage to individuals due to pre-existing conditions; 2) Section 5204 Public health workforce recruitment and retention programs.

With the first requirement, health care setting experienced a rise in the number of new patients, as expected. Many of these patients were probably afraid or restricted from going to the hospital or seeking medical care due to the lack of healthcare coverage. The impact is that more people are seeking medical care. From my nursing practice, I observe some of these patients have chronic illnesses that have been neglected and thus require more care. Also, more patients come for medical services; emergency rooms fill with more patients. This increases patients’ population. In return, this affects nurse to patient ratios. Nurses have to care for more patients. They have to work extra time due to shortage of staff. The downsides is that nurse morale is low and the risks for medical errors are high.

The second nursing provision (Section 5204) retained refers to the established “Public Health Workforce Loan Repayment Program.” This provision gird to assure an adequate supply of public health professionals to eliminate workforce shortages in public health agencies. The positive impact of this provision is that government will repay up to “1/3 of loans incurred by a health professions student in exchange for an agreement to accept employment with a public health agency for at least three years” (CDC). Ultimately, this provision makes it easier to attract young people to the field of nursing. This will have a positive impact on the nursing shortage. It is an attract incentive for many current nurses to pursue their studies and opt for advanced degree in nursing. This is exactly what I am intended to do.

Comment 3(Impact of PPACA on Nursing)

Nice post! Some important aspects of the ACA, include the consumer assistance program, which is a program that helps people enroll in coverage as well as file complaints if a person is denied payment for any type of healthcare service. There are also preventative healthcare services if eligible, paid by insurance. Seniors that are on Medicare who are struggling with prescription costs, can find assistance with discounts and rebates as well. The ACA also offers more options when choosing insurance coverage. There is also a pre-existing condition insurance plan for people who may have a disability or chronic condition, that were previously denied coverage under regular insurance options. In addition, parents are able to cover their children under the age of twenty-six if they are unable to get insurance. The ACA has given people the ability to choose any doctor they wish to see, whether or not they are affiliated with a network or not. Additionally, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) will be extended from 2015 through 2019, providing coverage to children in low-income families (KHN, 2018).

Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resource on your own before you bid. One of the references must come from Broderick and Blewitt (2015). I need this completed by 01/06/18 at 7pm.  Respond to my colleagues using one or more of the following approaches:

· Validate your colleague’s perspective or provide an alternative perspective by citing specific examples (based on observations or research) that illustrate the identified positive or negative influence.

· Offer another way a colleague might use knowledge of his or her identified influence to effectively work with adolescents and their families.

· Expand on your colleague’s posting by providing additional insights or contrasting perspectives based on readings and evidence.

Instructor says to me:

I enjoyed your post and I understand your point of view concerning culture and the impact it has on adolescents. In a household that has multiple cultures how would a counselor help parents articulate combining the different cultures for the best interest of their adolescents? For example, a mom may be Caucasian with a Christian background, and the father is Islamic with a Muslim background. Two completely different races and religions that found love, but their ideas and methods are completely opposite. I look forward to your thought.

(My post was)

Factors influence the development of adolescents

Culture, biology, environment, as well as sexual orientation among others, affect the development of adolescents.  Culture is highly significant in the development of adolescents. Cultural differences determine how the adolescents grow and the kind of behavior they will acquire.  Concerning the environment, the family structure as well other settings including the society influences the behavior of adolescents. The family acts as the prop in their development since it provides an immediate environment. The older siblings and parents are the role models (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).

Adolescence is a time of development when the children are undergoing numerous biological changes. The changes are physically manifested. Physical appearance is central during this stage. Boys acquire masculine features such as coarse voice and broadening of the chest. Girls’ changes include the onset of menstrual cycles as well as the growth of breasts. The physical changes could lead to low self-esteem if the appropriate environment is not provided.

Most significant factor(Week 6 Discussion Response)

Culture is the most significant factor influencing adolescent development. One of the primary reasons for this argument is that culture is the way of life and therefore all the environments have a particular way of life. Within the family, there is the kind of culture that already exists. Some families cultivate the culture of dependence while others are more independent. Adolescents who grow in families with dependence culture tend to be more dependent in their lives compared to those that grow in families with independence culture.  Independent household cultures come with high levels of freedom and responsibilities compared to dependent cultures.

Culture also relates to moral standards. Some of the essential moral standards are acquired during teenage. Parents of adolescents must instill morals in their children. In households where there is a culture of inculcating positive values in their children, the children acquire these values and are likely to uphold them in future (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).

Impact on the decisions of adolescents

The influence of culture is positive and profoundly impacts the decisions made by adolescents. For instance, within the family, parents urge their adolescents to uphold honesty and lead by example. Adolescents who have grown in homesteads and societies with this kind of culture will not lie even when there are great benefits of lying. Some cultures such as the in East Asia, families emphasize on harmony as opposed to honesty. The implication is that the adolescents will tell a lie as long as it contributes to family and social harmony.

How a counselor might apply this knowledge

A counselor can apply this knowledge in various ways. Firstly, he or she will help the parents understand the kind of culture their children are growing in and the equivalent expectations. For instance, some children will be more reliant on their families than others depending on the culture in the family and also in the society (Milevsky, Schlechter, Netter, & Keehn, 2007).

1. (A. Wit)(Week 6 Discussion Response)

Adolescence is an exciting and challenging stage for most people.  During this phase, children will experience rapid physiological change during puberty, moral development, socialization development with other kids and adults, intellectual growth, and greater independence.  Peer relationships can have a profound impact on identity development.  In this post, I will cover the positive and negative implications of peer relationships, cultural factors of socialization, and how counselors can support their adolescent clients.

Peer relationships in adolescence

Positive and negative peer experiences can affect multiple areas of a teen’s life.  The quality of social relationships can influence academic performance, self-esteem, emotional quality, and family relationships.  Typically, adolescents choose friends that have similar traits and interests to themselves (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  Peer relationships can positively influence development by encouraging skills such as communication, conflict resolution, problem-solving, cooperative learning, and shared decision making (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  Individuals feel a sense of belonging when they are included in the desired peer group and a sense of isolation and rejection when they are not included (Lee, Foote,Wittrock, Xu, Niu, & French, 2017).  When a child is accepted to a peer group, they are deemed popular.  Popular individuals may have stronger cognitive and social problems as well as positive self-concept (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  When a child is not accepted, or rejected by peers, they are not as likely to develop strong social skills (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  Rejection by peers is associated with aggressive behavior, impaired self-control, and diminished self-esteem (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  Research has found that children with signs of depression often hold a negative view of both themselves and peers, and isolation weakens the ability to understand social structure (Lee, Foote, Wittrock, Xu, Niu, & French, 2017).

Cultural Considerations(Week 6 Discussion Response)

An adolescent’s desire to belong to a peer group can be influenced by cultural factors such as gender and ethnicity.  Gender identity and sexual orientation can easily influence acceptance in peer relationships.  Teens who are not cisgender or heterosexual tend to have the most difficulty feeling accepted (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  Ethnic differences can be challenging for some.  Children that identify with a racial minority face the additional challenge of acculturation (Crocetti, Rubini, Luyckx, & Meeus, 2008). Cultural values that differ from the majority can be a source of rejection (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  Desirable peer qualities may vary depending on the demographics of the community.

Application

Counselors with adolescent clients must understand the client’s peer relationships.  Could depression and low self-esteem be attributed to rejection or isolation?  What are the qualities of the differences between the client and the desired peer group?  Are those differences biological or environmental?  Successful treatment for adolescents must account for the transactional nature of the problems and an understanding of what sustains that difficulty (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  One approach a counselor might take is to evaluate the client’s perspective of peer groups.  Some research shows that adolescents’ perception of peer groups may be influenced by their own attributes (Lee, Foote, Wittrock, Xu, Niu, &French, 2017).  Developing an awareness of identity and perception of others may be helpful.

Summary(Week 6 Discussion Response)

Peer relations can significantly influence adolescent development.  Positive peer experiences can have benefits that last into adulthood including high self-esteem, communication skills, and shared problem-solving abilities (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  Negative peer experiences including rejection and isolation can increase the likelihood of depressive symptoms and aggression in some adolescents.  Counselors of adolescent clients should take time to understand the influence of the client’s peer relationships.  Therapy may include a focus on the perception of peer relationships in correlation to individual cultural attributes.

2. (H. Men)(Week 6 Discussion Response)

Adolescence is the time in our lives that transitions us from childhood into adulthood. The awkwardness in this time period brings about physical changes in which little girls begin to look like grown women, and little boys begin to look like grown men. The changes may include growing breast for girls and facial hair for boys which may bring on feelings of insecurity if a child is not aware of why this change is occurring. The mindset in adolescences begin to take on a form in which they know everything and no adult can tell them differently or adults have no idea what they are experiencing. During the adolescence period two major developments occur which are sex role development and how peer relations are produced and the influence they have in this age group (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).

Most Significant Factor

The household that children are raised in sets the standards for how a child may possibly grow into their adulthood. The more positive and supportive the family tends to be, the more positive a child may become as an adult. The more negative an environment is for a child, the more hardships this child may experience as an adult. The environment outside of the home is just as important, for example the experiences children have at school plays an intricate part in how they perceive themselves and others.  Peer groups that a child becomes involved in teaches them how to communicate, resolve issues, set goals, learning capabilities, and skills for decision making (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). During this period for adolescence experiences which are positive or negative are influenced by the peer groups they choose to be a part of. The group they choose to be a part of definitely has an influence on an adolescence future either in a negative way or positive. If a child chooses to be a part of the math and science crowd because they intellectually stimulate each other, pushing them to learn and strive it may have a positive influence on the child’s future endeavors. However if a child decides to be a part of the get high club, this could impact their future in a negative way. Acceptance is extremely important to adolescences and being popular is the trend that most want to be included in. One study found that when adolescences are part of and accepted by the popular crowd it boosts their self esteem, whereas if you are teased by your friends this is an indication that you are well liked; but if you are ridiculed or made fun of this is an indication that the group is rejecting you (Kilimstra, Hale, Raaijmakers, Branje & Meeus, 2010).

Cultural Considerations(Week 6 Discussion Response)

Cultural considerations in adolescences play an intricate part in the development of this peer group. Depending on which part of the world adolescence is raised in may determine what is acceptable behavior and what is not acceptable behavior. Regardless of where you are at in the world, conflicts among peers are inevitable but the way these conflicts are resolved depends on how the society around you handles the conflicts (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). For example in the United States children are encouraged to be individuals, and I can hear my mother saying to me every day before I left for school. “Be a leader and not a follower”. The United States teaches their adolescences to defend their selves with words, learn the art of negotiation, and always be fair (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). In other cultures like in Asia adolescences are expected to resolve any conflict they have should be resolved amongst each other (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). It may be an asset for children to learn how to resolve issues peacefully without the coaching of an adult, because when these same children become adults they have learned how to resolve conflicts without the use of force. In social media which tends to show many adults in physical altercations over the most minor things. It may be due to the fact that they never learned as a child how to resolve their issues and the only way they can resolve them now is by physically fighting. Parents are encourages to also prepare their child with the skills needed in recognizing what they may experience negatively or positively depending on their race or ethnicity. Parents should prepare their children by helping them learn about their culture, values, and the activities within their culture (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Also if their children are the minority helping them understand discrimination from others does not determine who they are as a person (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015). Finally helping them and encouraging them to foster relationships with other groups will broaden their mindsets into accepting different cultures.

Application(Week 6 Discussion Response)

Encouraging parents to send their adolescences to counseling is a benefit that will produce positive results for years to come. Counselors are able to recognize familiar stressors in this age group such as school, family issues, or peer relationships. The majority of adolescences behavior will change during this time period. Sometimes parents will not notice the little changes that have occurred over a certain time, causing them to believe their adolescence changed overnight. The goal in helping this age group should include controlling distress, manage the social and emotional outlets, teach proper ways of communication, and help make family relationships stronger.

3. (B. Smi)(Week 6 Discussion Response)

Peer relationships are the most significant factor in influencing adolescent development. While adolescent development is influenced by parental relationships, culture, sexual orientation, sexuality, and environment, I believe peer relationships are most influential due to their affects on behavior.

The Most Significant Factor

Research has implied that peer relationships within childhood significantly impact mental health and social adjustment later in life.  Broderick (2015) imply that peer groups and social networks heavily impact children beginning in middle childhood. Children in this stage are most likely to fall into cliques and crowds. Cliques are described as informal while crowds are based on reputations and formed of  multiple cliques. Peer relationships allow middle childhood and early adolescent children to hone skills in communication, conflict resolution, joint goal setting, cooperative learning, and shared decision-making (Broderick, 2015).

A Positive Influence(Week 6 Discussion Response)

While peer relationships can have both positive and negative effects on adolescent development,  I think this influence is positive as it allows for children to work on their social competence, which affects overall mental health. This factor is positive as children improve their social skills. Broderick (2015)  defines good social skills as the use of appropriate language, making eye contact, and asking appropriate questions.  Peer relationships can also determine whether the child follows the “right” path and veers away from drugs and violence or follows a different crowd that encourages it.

Impact on Adolescent Decisions

Rejected children typically exhibit aggressive behaviors towards their peers. Broderick (2015) indicates that these children usually display verbal negativity, instrumental aggression, and disruptiveness. Research depicts that children are usually rejected due to their aggression, lack of self-control, and struggles with social interaction. However, research also shows that other rejected children are routinely withdrawn from others. “Rejected-withdrawn children are more socially anxious than other groups and likely to behave in socially inappropriate ways” (Broderick, 2015, pg. 312).

Cultural Effects(Week 6 Discussion Response)

In addition to all of the above mentioned information, culture also impacts adolescent development. A significant aspect of culture is socioeconomic status which defines one’s environment. Research depicts that where a person lives has a lasting impact on social development and adjustment (Crocetti, 2008). For example, a child living in extreme poverty will experience more struggles (poor nutrition, possibly poor sleep habits/conditions) than a child from a well off family. Living situations matter most as it reflects on how much attention the child receives at home. Children who struggle with social competence typically have a hectic home life.

How to Apply the Knowledge

Children within the middle childhood and early adolescence range are working their hardest to define their identities and figure out how they fit into society (Crocetti, 2008). During this time, other’s perception of them is the most important and typically defines how they see themselves. Being aware of how much influence peer relationships have on a child’s behaviors in addition to their culture, parental relationships, SES, and environment could assist a counselor in identifying appropriate interventions.
