Expository Essay Draft

Expository Essay Draft

(Expository Essay Draft)

Question description

Write a 1000-1500-word essay about a topic of your choice in the style described within Unit VI and VII.

Purpose: Throughout Units VI and VII, we have discussed the conventions of the expository essay. The purpose of this assignment is to measure your mastery of those conventions by putting your knowledge to practice. As we discussed in Unit VI, Lesson 1, the expository essay is a general term for an essay that expounds upon or explains a topic. The objective of the essay is to convey information to the reader; most importantly, an expository essay is an exploration of a topic, and the tone is explanatory. After choosing your topic, you will need to choose the form that is most appropriate to fit the topic: cause and effect, problem and solution, or sequential. A thesis statement, which contains the paper’s argument, will be appropriate to the form you choose.

Process: For the expository essay, you will complete the following steps:

  1. Choose a topic: See Unit VI, Lesson 2, for more information about choosing a topic.
  2. Create a plan of action: See Unit VI, Lesson 3, for strategies for assessing what you already know and assessing what you need to know.
  3. Research the topic: See Unit VI, Lesson 4, for instruction on research methods.
  4. Choose the organization of your essay: Choose between cause and effect, problem and solution, or sequential organization types. See Unit VI, Lesson 1, for a list of the three organizational forms, and see Unit VII, Lesson 1, for a description of thesis statements written according to the organizational form of the essay.
  5. Create a thesis statement: See Unit VII, Lesson 1, for a description of thesis statements written according to the organizational form of the essay.
  6. Draft the essay: See Unit VII, Lesson 1, for keeping brainstorming in mind and Unit VII, Lesson 2, for more on the drafting process and description of each essay section.

Stylistic details: All essays must meet the following requirements:

  • Include 1000-1500 words.
  • Write in Times New Roman, 12 pt. font.
  • Include one-inch margins on all sides.
  • Use double spacing (top-to-bottom every page, to include above and below titles and centered words).
  • Include an APA title page (for all essays) and reference list that includes all of the sources used in the essay.
  • Include a header.
  • Include page numbers (upper-right corner only).
  • Adhere to APA convention and documentation style (See the CSU citation guide for assistance.).
  • At least one source is required. All sources used must be cited.

Senior Project Summary

Senior Project Summary

(Senior Project Summary)

“Our senior project, ‘Exploring Sustainable Urban Agriculture,’ aimed to address food insecurity and environmental sustainability in urban areas. Through collaborative research and hands-on experimentation, we developed innovative methods for growing organic produce in limited urban spaces. Utilizing vertical gardening techniques, hydroponic systems, and recycled materials, we created scalable models for urban farming that minimize water usage and carbon footprint.

Our project integrated community outreach programs to educate residents about sustainable practices and empower them to cultivate their own food. By partnering with local schools and organizations, we conducted workshops and provided resources to promote food sovereignty and healthy eating habits.

Through rigorous data collection and analysis, we demonstrated the feasibility and economic viability of urban agriculture as a solution to food deserts and climate change. Our project not only provided tangible solutions but also fostered a sense of community resilience and environmental stewardship.”

Evaluating Purpose Statements.

DQ 4 Discussion: Evaluating Purpose Statements.

(Evaluating Purpose Statements.)

There is a link between understanding the purpose of one’s research and selecting the appropriate methods to investigate the questions that are derived from that purpose.

–(Newman, Ridenour, Newman, & DeMarco, G. M. P., Jr., 2003, p. 169)

For this Discussion, you will evaluate the purpose statements in assigned journal articles in your discipline and consider the alignment of theory, problem, and purpose. You will also explain your position on the relationship between research and social change.

Alignment means that a research study possesses clear and logical connections among all of its various components. To achieve these connections, researchers must carefully craft the components of their study such that when they are viewed together, there is a coherent interrelationship.

As you read the authors’ purpose statements, consider how well the intent of the study, and its connection to the problem and theoretical framework, is presented. Also consider if the purpose statement reveals the study’s potential for engendering positive social change.

As you know, social change is a distinguishing feature of Walden University’s mission. Positive social change implies a transformation that results in positive outcomes. This can happen at many levels (e.g., individual, family systems, neighborhoods, organizations, nationally and globally); and positive social change can occur at different rates: slow and gradual or fast and radical.

With these thoughts in mind, refer to the Journal Articles document for your assigned articles for this Discussion. You will switch your journal article assignment from Week 3. If your last name starts with A through L, use Article B. If your last name starts with M through Z, use Article A. Follow the prompt below for your program.

Post a critique of the research study in which you:

· Evaluate the purpose statement using the Purpose Statement Checklist as a guide

· Analyze alignment among the theory, problem, and purpose

· Explain your position on the relationship between research and social change

Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

Purpose Statement Checklist

Use the following criteria to evaluate an author’s purpose statement. Look for indications of the following:

• Does the statement begin with signaling words?

• Does the statement identify the research approach (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed)?

• Does the statement clearly state the intent of the study?

• Does the statement mention the participants?

• Does the statement mention the research site?

• Is the statement framed in a way that is consistent with the identified problem? If the study is qualitative, does the purpose statement do as follows?

• Focus on a single phenomenon

• Use an action verb to convey how learning will take place

• Use neutral, nondirectional language

• Provide a general definition of the central phenomenon If the study is quantitative, does the purpose statement do as follows?

• Identify the variables under study

• Provide a general definition of each key variable

• Use words that connect the variables

• Identify a theory If the study is mixed methods, does the purpose statement do as follows?

• Discuss the reason(s) for mixing both quantitative and qualitative data

• Include the characteristics of a good qualitative purpose statement (as listed above)

Research Theory, Design, and Methods Walden University

• Include the characteristics of a good quantitative purpose statement (as listed above)

• Indicate the specific method of collecting both quantitative and qualitative data

Ethical Failures in Research.

Ethical Failures in Research.

(Ethical Failures in Research.)

Response to this:

Ethical Review – The Stanford Prison ExperimentCOLLAPSE

The Stanford Prison Experiment is a classic case study used in many introductory psychology courses (Bartels, 2015). The controversial nature of the study and the dramatic results have lead many people to question the morality of the methods used, but was this experiment even ethical? Looking at the established set of guidelines published in the Nuremberg Code, it can be argued that this experiment is deficient in several areas of the code. The Nuremberg Code is considered by many to be the “most authoritative legal and human rights code on the subject of human experimentation (Emanuel, 2011, pp 136).”  The code outlines ten key elements that must be met to protect the safety and integrity of the human subjects involved in the research. The Stanford Prison Experiment did not satisfy the point in the code that states that, “the experiment should be so conducted as to avoid all unnecessary physical and mental suffering and injury (Emanuel, 2011, pp 139).” The investigator, Dr. Zimbardo, instructed the volunteers assigned to be guards to degrade the prisoners and to make them feel powerless. The guards also took away mattresses and stripped the prisoners naked to humiliate and establish their power. Some of the prisoners were so stressed and disturbed by the conditions that the experiment was ended a week early. There was no avoidance of unnecessary mental harm, and worse so, it was even encouraged by the investigator. Another main point of the code that appears to have been violated by this experiment was the point that, “during the course of the experiment the human subject should be at liberty to bring the experiment to an end (Office of Human Research Protections, (2018)).” While some of the prisoner subjects did choose to exit the study early, several were left in such a state of stress and confusion that they thought they were being held in jail. They internalized the role so much from the torment of the guards that a few days into the experiment, some of the prisoners staged a hungry strike and revolted against the guards (McLeoad, 2017). The prisoner subjects were left feeling that they had no liberty to leave and were even told so by some of the mock guards. This portion of the code was clearly avoided.

The timing of the Stanford Prison Experiment was centered right in the middle of when research ethics standards were being more accepted and publicized. The Declaration of Helsinki, which was originally adopted in 1964, held five original core principles regarding clinical research ethics. Among those principles was the notion for the “need for scientific and moral justification for the research (Emanuel, 2011, pp 142).” While the moral justification was questioned previously, the scientific need is what is controversial. What exactly was the useful medical or therapeutic knowledge gained from this experiment? The 1975 revision of the Declaration also brought to the forefront an emphasis on maximizing benefit while minimizing any risks to the subjects. It is clear from the methods used during this experiment that the risks were not minimized, and as such, another example of the unethical nature of this study.

Continuing with the concept of maximizing benefit while minimizing risk, the moral principle of Beneficence in the Belmont Report is applicable here. The key elements of beneficence in clinical research is to do no harm and maximize possible benefits and minimize possible harm (Office of Human Research Protections, (2018)). In the Stanford Prison Experiment case, the underlying theme of do no harm as it applies to the Belmont Report can be extracted from the Hippocratic Oath that medical professionals undertake during their training. This study did in fact do physical and mental harm to the subjects, thereby violating this oath. The well-being of the research subjects was not secured in this study, and as mentioned previously was even encouraged to be taken away from them. There was no element of beneficence or anything of the like other than the experiment ending early which would give this study any sense of being ethical. The argument that psychology research differs from other types of medical research can only be based on loose grounds. The fact that in any study where human volunteers are being researched should have the same protections in place for the people, not merely test subjects, involved.

Enhancing Emergency Evacuation Preparedness

Enhancing Emergency Evacuation Preparedness

(Enhancing Emergency Evacuation Preparedness)

Importance Of Training In Patient Evacuation

In an emergency evacuation of patients, training plays an important role. Here is an incidence of emergency evacuation of Phillips County Regional Medical Center discussed by Vogt and Sorenson (1999):

Shortly after 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, 1997, clouds of foul-smelling smoke began pouring from an herbicide and pesticide packaging plant in West Helena, Arkansas. An alert was sounded, employees evacuated, and the West Helena fire department was called. As three firefighters prepared to enter the plant, the chemical compounds exploded, collapsing a solid concrete block wall, and killing all three firefighters. As the odorous smoky cloud drifted away from the plant, authorities ordered residents in a 2-mile area downwind of the plant to evacuate and those in the 2- to 3-mile zone to shelter in . . . The findings indicate that 90% of those that were told to evacuate did so but only 27% of those told to shelter-in-place did so, with 68% opting to evacuate instead. The implications of these findings for emergency managers is that people will likely choose to evacuate when both warnings to evacuate and warnings to shelter are issued to residents in close proximity to each other (Abstract section, para. 1).

The evacuation of the medical center was facilitated by efforts taken 6 months earlier to update the hospital’s evacuation plan and reconfirm support agreements for relocation sites and supplies. At that time of updating the plan, the entire staff had also participated in a mock drill. When the safety officer observed the buildings across the highway being evacuated and started questioning officials on the possibility of also being evacuated, evacuation plans familiar to staff were in place and had been practiced. When the Director of Nursing gave the “Code White” alert (the signal that an evacuation to an off-site facility would follow) staff was amply prepared to move patients (p. 11).

Interviews with staff indicated that all patients that could be discharged were sent home with a physician’s nurse. Another four or five patients (the most seriously ill) were transferred to a hospital about a half hour away. The majority of the patients 11 (approximately 17) in the rehabilitation unit were transferred to a vacant wing of the Crestpark Nursing home accompanied by hospital support staff. Only one maternity patient evacuated to the Phillips College—Community College where the hospital staff had evacuated and opened emergency room services. The evacuation of patients began at 1:40 p.m. and all patients (except for two on ventilators and one being stabilized in the emergency room) were out 55 minutes later. The remaining three patients were evacuated 15 minutes later. A variety of vehicles transported patients—vans, school buses, ambulances, private cars, and mortuary services. As a precaution, National Guard personnel provided security at the evacuated hospital (pp. 11–12).

On the basis of your understanding on the topic, answer the following questions regarding the incidence of emergency evacuation mentioned above:

What does this study tell you about the lack of training for the community?

Why is communication and education of the community important in saving lives?

Was the community clear on what the procedures were? How?

Why was the evacuation of the hospital so successful?

How important are external relationships with other agencies to having an efficient evacuation plan?

Your review should be at least 2- to 3-page Microsoft Word document, not counting the cover page or the reference page.

Support your responses with reasoning and examples.

Cite any sources in APA format.

IDS Capstone Paper

Question description

This is a less serious capstone project

Write a report about an organization you have worked/are working, volunteering or interning for. This organization can be a public agency, a nonprofit, a private company or even a student club. In this report you need to identify a problem or issue your organization is facing and propose a solution. The scale of the problem can range from your store having experienced record loses last quarter to the need for better customer service or employee training. If there is no major issue you can think of, approach this report from the perspective of, “How can my company do better?” There is always room for improvement! Do not rely on your experience/intuition alone. Make fact based arguments that you can find support for in existing literature. Stating, “I think we should make changes to process x because my research has revealed that companies a, b and c who have undergone a similar transformation are currently outperforming us” is much more powerful than, “I think we should make changes to process x because I see it is problematic and there is room for improvement”. It does not matter if your position in the organization is “lower” than the level/perspective from which you are writing and indeed that can be good, because it will require you to be aspirational. Example: you may be mainly a barista at Starbucks, but could still write the report as if you were an Associate Manager. The report should be roughly 10 double-spaced pages long, with the caveat that as this is a “practical” rather than strictly “academic” report … it should be as long as it needs to be given the topic and the approach. This means a 7 page paper might be fine, if otherwise superlative; and it means a 15 page paper with a fair amount of graphics would be okay, too.

  • Introduction: Your introduction needs to give the reader a clear idea of what you are going to talk about in your paper and how your paper will be organized. It must also be succinct. If your paper is 10 pages long your introduction should be one page or less.Citations: All key factual statements must be backed up by reliable sources. If you state, “Internships are crucial for gaining employment” you need to cite a source that shows this is really the case and this is not just you expressing your opinion.
  • Limited references to personal experience: It is okay to draw from your personal experience while writing this report, but the whole paper cannot be about what you love about your job or why you are a business wiz. You need to contextualize your experience. For example, “Volunteering with United Way opened up many professional opportunities for me. I am not alone in this experience as x study has shown that students who volunteer as undergrads have greater career opportunities when they graduate.”
  • Good writing and organization: Your report needs to consist of content written out in full sentences, not bullet points (although some bullet-lists are fine, if suitable to the material). You can use pictures and tables if they lend weight to the information you are presenting; however, wholesale substituting of images for written content would be a mistake. You are being judged on the quality of your writing and presentation and research incorporation, not the content per se (the best way of thinking about this: imagine you are writing for a “boss”; the boss likely lacks expertise in what you are writing about, but definitely wants to be reassured that you know what you are writing about… the first sign of lack of expertise, is sloppy prose and organization/presentation.

(Revamping SoulCycle’s Marketing Strategy)

I had planned on doing the paper on the place that I work SoulCycle, this is what I have so far.

For the past year and a half I have worked at SoulCycle, an indoor cycling fitness studio that has changed easily changed the way we think about working out. SoulCycle has also changed the way we think about a company and what it takes to be successful. What started as a singular studio in the upper west side of New York has grown into over sixty locations across the united states (Kowitt, 2016). What is most interesting to me about the spectacular growth of this company is the fact that it was all done organically. They never contracted out to others for marketing but rather took the job into their own hands and handcrafted a marketing technique specific to each location but based on a foundation of reaching out into the community and creating a stronghold.

I was hired at the SoulCycle Coral Gables studio and have worked very hard to be a part of this process, I found that I was learning so many great skills that will be so helpful beyond this job in the future. As I have learned these skills I have also grown within the company and continue to do so. I started as a front desk associate and transitioned into the role of a key holder meaning that I am many times managing the studio myself instead of a manager, I am currently in the process of becoming an assistant studio manager of marketing. Currently at the studio that I work at there have been many changes in management leaving the position of marketing manager vacant. Which I have witnessed become a great issue. Marketing is one of the main reasons behind the success of Soul and placing the position on the bike operations manager who is already at a full capacity of work and the studio manager has created a lack of time spent on the marketing process. Because such an important position has been left vacant the studio is missing out on major marketing opportunities that I feel that I can provide to the studio to bring in more customers.

The studio has experienced many ups and downs in terms of management, in fact the original four managers that hired me are no longer with my company so I believe that this shows my ability to deal with changes in the workplace well. That being said I can understand why one might think it is wise to wait to find the perfect candidate but waiting for an opportunity to come is not wise when the studio is suffering from missing constant opportunities in relation to marketing.

Redefining Mental Health Frameworks

Redefining Mental Health Frameworks

(Redefining Mental Health Frameworks)

Discussion

The underlying predicament arises when mental conditions are defined as disorders rather than by the predicaments that human beings face. As such, psychiatry is highly dependent on the assessment of the psychological disorders, the definition and the fundamental psychological changes that exist thereof; an aspect that has been mirrored and projected in the scientist’s discussion by J. Krishnamurti, David Bohm, and Rupert Sheldrake.

The result is that the definitions tend to range with others seeking to define it as a disorder and others arguing that it is in essence concept that falls under the socio-political threshold. Additionally, it is argued that a mental condition is predisposed to purposes of social control and to factual basis laid out by the science.
Perhaps with the integration of both the science and socio-political value is aligned, then a proper analysis of mental disorders is inevitable.

At this juncture, it becomes possible to make an assessment of the mental and physical conditions. Conditions are often relative to negativity if they result in the failure of the mechanisms in the performance of processes for which they are mandated. Mental conditions have also been subject to a diagnosis of symptoms and the implications of diagnosis that fall under the cross-cultural criteria. This has also been under scrutiny owing to the lack of a proper justification of a scientific fact or rather a condition influenced by the socio-political environment thereof.

Culture is a variable in making a diagnosis whereby the specific determining variables include the data on family, explanatory models, as well as patient-centric care based on their strengths and weaknesses. It is imperative to make a distinction between suffering that is imposed by nature and the nature of disorders themselves in which case David Bohm argues that
Disorder is a human consciousness and it is directly relative to nature. It is the natural state of the human being to succumb to suffering; what the discussion refers to as the “disorder.” Krishnamurti, argues that remembering pain creates a sense of continuity upon which disorders are based upon, but in reality it is often in self-context, prompting self-concern and commitment and as such the same can be manipulated to free the individual from suffering.
