Question description

The research articles used for this assignment must be reports of single research studies (use the research articles that you submitted for the literature search).

Literature reviews, program evaluations, psychometric evaluations, systematic reviews and meta-analysis or meta-synthesis are important pieces of evidence but are NOT appropriate for this assignment. The research articles that you identify should meet the following criteria:

  • Be current (published within the last 5 – 8 years)
  • Be complete reports of single research studies
  • Be from a peer-reviewed, scholarly journals

It is preferable that the article is from a scholarly nursing journal, but it is recognized that nurses may be a part of an interdisciplinary research team that publishes in journals outside of the discipline of nursing. In this case, one of the authors of the article must be a nurse. It is imperative that the nursing perspective be present in the research.

The report recommends that with trained nurses better decisions can be made in complex health situations especially at the end of life stage for cancer patients and in providing support to the patient’s family.

This research study assesses the impact of trained nurses offering palliative care in an urban hospice. The study uses four trained nurses to assess the basic functional activities carried out during the palliative care for cancer patients at the end of life. The study also used an intervention group that was trained by the four selected nurses to compare the quality of care. The study found that the intervention group demonstrated a great level of improvement especially in their ability to achieve set goals of the palliative care. The findings from the study suggested that trained nurses can provide good assessment and intervention and this leads to improved health condition and comfort for patients at the end of life.

The report concludes that when patients are given palliative care by trained nurses they have a quality life at the end of life, and the family members go through bereavement with much ease because the nurses understand the best way to connect the two interventions.

He states that you need to recommend that he be allowed to live in a single cell (celled alone) or else he will kill himself.

Palmer has a history of various psychiatric diagnoses, including schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and malingering. His psychological records show that he has been on a suicide watch at previous institutions due to engaging in self-mutilation and had engaged in highly frequent disruptive behavior at the special housing unit (segregation unit) where he was housed.

You are the forensic professional at the high-security penitentiary assigned to complete an intake assessment of this inmate.

Create a 5- to 7-page document including an intake assessment and a treatment and recommendations report for this inmate, explaining both his history and current evaluation.

Part 1

TJ secretly enjoys pornography. He gets a great deal of gratification out of viewing Internet pornography and masturbating, though he always acts behind closed doors and believes that his actions have no effect on others. He justifies his behavior by saying, ‘Who am I harming?’

Then he discovers a statistic on the Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking website (http://www.unglobalcompact.org/docs/issues_doc/labour/Forced_labour/HUMAN_TRAFFICKING_-_THE_FACTS_-_final.pdf)  stating that 43% of human trafficking victims are used for forced commercial sexual exploitation, of whom 98% are women and girls, and that the pornography business is a multibillion dollar industry (Global Initiative, n.d.).

His freedom to view pornography is now at odds with harm to himself (addiction) and others (abuse through forced trafficking and media exploitation). Evaluation of a Qualitative Study For this assignment you will locate an article from the peer-reviewed scholarly journals in your field using one of the databases available in the Capella University Library.  This assignment should be between 4 and 6 pages in length, double-spaced using 12-point Times New Roman font, not counting the title page and reference section.

You will notice the running head contains the words “evaluation of a quantitative study” and it is presented in all capitals. Also, notice that the words “running head” appear only on the first page and just the running head itself appears on subsequent pages. Next, notice that the title on the second page above is centered and capitalized but it is not in bold. This follows the example on page 42 of the APA Manual and also a second example found on page 54.  Below you will notice that headings have been provided for this assignment. They follow the protocols for formatting level one and two headings found on page 62 and the example presented on page 58 of the APA Manual.  It is sound practice to consult the APA Manual for formatting guidance.

Evaluation of the Research Problem   In most cases the research problem appears early on in a research report.  However, it is not always set off in its own section with a clear heading identifying it.  You may have to do a bit of detective work to locate the description of the research problem.

Does the problem statement indicate a counseling issue to study?  You will have to make a judgment call as to whether or not the research article addresses a counseling issue and explain why or why not you have taken this position.   Has the author provided evidence that this issue is important? Briefly describe the evidence presented in the discussion of the research problem that demonstrates this is an important issue deserving of being researched.  Summarize in your own words, not direct quotes, the evidence presented and explain your own view of whether or not this is an important issue. Evaluation of the Literature Review   Sometimes the literature review is nicely organized and set off in its own section with thoughtful headings.  In other instances, comments on the literature associated with the research topic are scattered throughout the research report.

Develop your evaluation of the literature review portion of the article. Points to think about in your evaluation are how well the author(s) tell the story of the topic by synthesizing the literature they have reviewed, and what themes are present in the literature review.  Another point to consider is whether it appears that the author(s) conducted an unbiased review of the literature, presenting more than one possible point of view. Evaluation of Research Purpose Statement and Questions Qualitative is a broad approach to research, consisting of many specific research designs.  Examples are: grounded theory, case study, narrative, phenomenological, and ethnographic.  Each research design has been developed to address certain kinds of research questions. Researchers should explicitly state the name of their chosen research design, but sometimes they do not.

Likewise, sometimes authors state their purpose statement and research questions very clearly and sometimes they do not.  Use your growing knowledge to find these elements in the article you are evaluating.   Formal hypotheses are devices that are used for statistical analyses, so they will probably not appear in qualitative studies. Research Design Name the research design used and briefly, in your own words, describe how this design is going to address what the researchers want to know.  For example, a phenomenological design will explore the lived subjective experience of a group of people who share an experience in common. Research Purpose Statement The research purpose statement declares the intent of the study.

An example is: The purpose of the study is to use phenomenological research to explore the lived experience of intentionally childfree Hispanic women.

Identify the research purpose statement, and offer your thoughtful opinion on how the author(s) presented their purpose.  If you found the purpose statement lacking, be specific as to why.  Research Questions Research questions may be stated as questions or declarative statements.  They have a specific focus.  An example is:  what is the lived experience of intentionally and permanently childfree Hispanic women? Sometimes the research questions are clearly identified in a research report, other times you have to look for them, and sometimes they are not presented at all.  Examine your article and list the research questions if they are presented.

Offer your opinion on how well the research question was developed.  There may be more than one research question.

Evaluation of Data Collection Plan   In your own words, without using direct quotes, describe how participants were selected for this study.

Identify the type of sampling strategy that was used in this research study.  It will probably be explicitly stated in the article, using terms such as convenience, purposeful or snowball.

Explain why you have taken this position (other than, it says so in the article).  Offer your opinion of how the selection of participants could be improved in order to produce a stronger study.  Go beyond simply saying the sample could be larger, which would not demonstrate your growing knowledge of the purpose of specific sampling strategies.  Remember, the purpose of sampling is different for qualitative studies than it is for quantitative studies.  In qualitative studies, the goal is not to be able to generalize findings from the sample to the population.  Selection of Participants In your own words without using direct quotes, describe how participants were selected for this study.

Offer your assessment of what type of sampling was used in this research report. Offer your opinion of how the selection of participants could be improved in order to produce a stronger study. Gaining Permission Qualitative research is usually more intrusive than quantitative research because qualitative researchers typically spend more time at the research site and engage with the participants more directly than quantitative researchers. As a result, qualitative researchers have to be more sensitive and thoughtfully respect individual participants and research sites. Briefly summarize how the researchers gained permission to enter the research site and also how they obtained informed consent from the research participants to gather data. Offer an evaluation of whether or not the researchers gained permission according to ethical standards.  If this is not described in the research report, offer a brief explanation of how you would have gained permission and consent if you were conducting the research project.

Determining the Data to Collect In your own words, without using direct quotes, briefly describe the data that was collected in order to fulfill the study’s purpose and answer the research questions. The primary forms of data in qualitative research are observations, interviews and questionnaires, documents, and audiovisual materials. Which of these forms of data were collected? Were any other forms of data collected? Offer an evaluation of the appropriateness of the data that was collected in order for meeting the study’s goals. Recording Data Data recording protocols are usually forms designed by qualitative researchers to record information during interviews and observations. Did the researcher(s) describe the protocols they used?  If so, what were they? Offer an evaluation of the effectiveness of these protocols. If they are not described, what protocols would you recommend for this study?

Evaluation of Data Analysis and Interpretation Plan   In order to develop this section you may refer to the sections of the course text which address data analysis and interpretation for specific qualitative research designs.  Most of the data collected by qualitative researchers involves transcripts of interviews and field notes.  Some kind of coding of the data takes place.

There are many specific procedures for coding and analyzing the data.  Two specific strategies are thematic analysis and the constant comparative method. Mental health services can target families and couples already experiencing severe problems, those couples and families experiencing common life stage transitions, and even couples and families that have not yet shown any signs of difficulty at all. Primary prevention seeks to intervene with the latter group on a mass scale with the goal of impacting the greatest number of couples and families as possible. As attractive as primary prevention sounds, and equally common-sensical and time-honored, the development and implementation of primary preventative interventions and programs proves difficult. For instance, it is difficult to measure the impact of an intervention or program that seeks to forestall some future outcome that may be one or more years away. Fortunately, much research has been conducted on what constitutes an effective, or good, preventative intervention or program. The dilemma for mental health professionals as a whole, and for you as a future marriage, couple, and family counselor, is how to carve out space in your professional work for the creation and development of prevention programming. This is challenging because in clinical practice, the majority of time and money may be spent on tertiary prevention or remedial counseling.

To prepare for this Discussion, use the Internet to find a prevention program for an area of professional interest. Consider how this program is effective or ineffective using the characteristics of effective programs outlined in the Learning Resources.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 the title for the prevention program you selected. Describe three characteristics that make this program effective and explain why. Then, describe at least one characteristic that the program is lacking. Finally, explain how you would redesign the program to effectively incorporate the missing characteristic.

The written research proposal will be created based on a narrowly defined aspect of the topic selected in Week One. A research proposal is a detailed plan for a specific study to be conducted at a future time. It is the document which potential researchers typically submit to an institutional review board (IRB) for ethical review and approval, and/or to funding agencies to secure financial support for a research effort. Because it is a plan for research which has not yet been conducted, the Methods section should be written in the future tense and should not contain any hypothetical results. The paper must address all of the components required in the Methods section of a research proposal. The following actions must be completed.

  • State the research question and/or hypothesis.
  • Briefly compare the characteristics of the major research paradigms used in previous studies on the chosen topic. Introduce the specific approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods), research design, sampling strategy, data collection procedures, and data analysis techniques to be used in this study. Provide a short explanation as to why the selected procedures are more feasible than other alternatives for the research topic.
  • Describe any relevant variables, measures, and statistical tests.
  • Apply ethical principles and professional standards to the proposed psychological research. Provide an analysis of any ethical issues that may arise and explain how these issues will be resolved.

The following headings for the required sections and subsections must appear in the paper. In accordance with APA style, all references listed must be cited in the text of the paper.

  • Introduction
    • Introduce the research topic, explain why it is important, and present an appropriately and narrowly defined research question and/or hypothesis.
  • Literature Review
    • Evaluate the published research on the chosen topic including a minimum of three peer-reviewed articles. Summarize the current state of knowledge on the topic, making reference to the findings of previous research studies. Briefly mention the research methods that have previously been used to study the topic. State whether the proposed study is a replication of a previous study or a new approach employing methods that have not been used before. Be sure to properly cite all sources in APA style.
  • Methods
    • Design – Create a feasible research design that incorporates appropriate methods to address the topic. Indicate whether the approach of the proposed study is qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. Identify the specific research design, and indicate whether it is experimental or non-experimental. Evaluate the chosen design and explain why this design is feasible and appropriate for the topic and how it will provide the information needed to answer the research question. Cite sources on research methodology to support these choices. Include a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources.
    • Participants – Identify and describe the sampling strategy to be used to recruit participants for the study. Estimate the number of participants needed, and explain why this sampling method is appropriate for the research design and approach.
    • Procedure/Measures – Apply the scientific method by describing the steps to be taken in carrying out the study. Identify any test, questionnaire, or measurement instrument to be utilized. If an existing published instrument will be employed, briefly describe it and cite the source. If an original questionnaire, survey, or test will be created for the project, describe the types of information that will be collected with it and explain how the validity and reliability of the instrument will be established. If such an instrument will not be used, describe how the data will be collected for the study.
    • Data Analysis – Describe the statistical techniques (if quantitative) or the analysis procedure (if qualitative) to be used to analyze the data. Cite at least one peer-reviewed source on the chosen analysis technique.
    • Ethical Issues – Analyze the impact of ethical concerns on the proposed study, such as confidentiality, deception, informed consent, potential harm to participants, conflict of interest, IRB approval, etc. After analyzing the ethical issues that apply to the project, indicate what will be done to handle these concerns.

The article critiqued is Multicultural Differences in Women’s Expectations of Birth that was found in the AFB Journal in the spring of 2016.

When it comes to childbirth, expectant women may have expectations that are different than what will and does actually happen. The Mother’s expectations of the childbirth experience may also be very different than that of the healthcare provider that will manage her delivery.

Initial searches for article titles were performed by the researcher, key words used were combinations of childbirth, culture, expectations, anticipations, institutionalized racism, pregnancy, state of the science, transcultural nursing, birth, primipara and nullipara were used.

Abstracts and keywords were conducted using the following:

PubMed, SCOCINAH, Medline and grey literaturProQuestSigma Theta Tau International database.

Two seminal anthropologic texts (Jordan’s and Davis- Floyd’s book Birth in Four Cultures (1993), and Davis- Floyd ’s discussion of American birth, Birth as an American Rite of Passage (2003), related to birth were included. Both texts discussed the views of various cultures, including American/Western culture. Culture defines safe birth and postpartum practices, designed to preserve the life of the mother and infant, and the future maternal health and fertility.

The data collected:

Qualitative and Quantitative work was used. Most of the studies used were qualitative and included:

  • Ethnographic
  • Exploratory and Descriptive
  • Or, of Phenomenological works

Quantitative studies were predominantly descriptive surveys, comparison and/or correlation. Many of the studies were done in industrialized nations including the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand.

The questions and topics evaluated in the study covered personal behavior and control, provider behavior, support of family and partner, pain, western culture and hegemony, and the health of the baby.

Discussion and Conclusion:

It was determined that several issues arose that had a direst effect upon the validity of the study. Some of those issues were: Language barrier, African American women were not included in the research data (and to some extent, neither were women of Hispanic culture).Educational backgrounds were not diverse enough (one study only included professional women) Women of a lower socio-economic level were also not included.

The conclusion was that the study is missing vital data and further studies are required. This is an accurate conclusion.

Finding one’s academic voice is an important part of development when dedicating one’s self to earning a degree. However, it is not always easy. Sometimes we lack the confidence (self-efficacy) and think our words are not good enough. Other times, managing our time becomes difficult and taking short cuts seems like our only way out. Once this habit begins, especially if it is not caught, can have devastating results later down the road, but often our emotions allow us to rationalize the practice of taking this easy option.

There are also many temptations with the World Wide Web, including websites touting that you can buy information that cannot be traced. Be cautious. Technological advancement is making this claim false.

Find your confidence and take the high road by developing your academic voice. One of the most important aspects to this is simply giving credit to where the information was learned.
