Writing:(CrossCultural Insights: Humanitarian Endeavors)

  • Title your Project
  • Introduction: Begin with the attention-getter, tie in the background information, and end the introduction with your thesis.
  • Body:
    • Clearly identify the topic of each section. The topic must be a statement, not a question, and should begin with your own ideas and your own words.
    • After identifying your topic, use quotations or paraphrase from your sources to help illustrate the point you are making (be sure to identify the author(s) and source(s)).
    • After you have given support, spend a sentence or two explaining how the example(s) support the section topic.
    • A compilation of your research, your literature review, your methods, (how the data was collected or generated and analyzed), and your results should be included in the body of your project.
  • Conclusion:
    • Restate your thesis. This means that you say about the same thing as you did in your thesis, but you say it differently.
    • After stating your thesis, restate the topics from each of your body sections and emphasize what is important for your audience/readers to remember.
    • End your conclusion with a call to action that illustrates what your audience/readers should do with the information you presented.

Please note: You will have the opportunity to revise and perfect this project, but you should do your best to make each step as complete as possible so you can receive more relevant and constructive feedback from your instructor and your peers.

Performance Standards And Appraisals Discussion

Performance Standards And Appraisals Discussion

(Performance Standards And Appraisals Discussion)

Discussion: Performance Standards and Appraisals  Performance appraisals should be timely, thoughtful, consistent, thorough, and free from bias.

How can performance appraisal systems be structured to facilitate this type of environment?

Effective performance standards and appraisals can promote an open and continuous relationship among the nurse manager, HR professionals, and employees. How might you, as a nurse manager, use performance appraisals and other performance management strategies, such as positive discipline, in your leadership approach?

In this Discussion, you reflect on questions that commonly arise when assessing performance appraisal processes.

  • Performance Standards:
  • Who creates performance standards, and how are they communicated to employees?
  • Are performance standards consistent with quality standards commonly used in the nursing profession?
  • Do performance standards align with legal and ethical nursing practice?
  • Performance Appraisals:
  • How is employee performance (i.e., behaviors, attitudes, abilities, and skills) documented?
  • What measures, if any, protect employees from subjectivity?
  • Are employees asked to engage in any form of self-evaluation?
  • Do colleagues participate in peer evaluations such as 360-degree appraisals?
  • Does the performance appraisal process encourage employee development?
  • Aside from the written performance measures, what aspects contribute to success or failure in achieving performance improvement?   To prepare
  • Review this week’s media, “Performance Management,” and consider the best practices highlighted by this week’s presenters.
  • Reflect on the performance standards and appraisal systems used in your current organization or one with which you are familiar. With the above questions in mind, identify this organization’s strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Drawing from ideas presented in this week’s Learning Resources, think of specific ways you might improve your organization’s use of performance standards and/or the performance appraisal process.
  • Review the article, “Positive Discipline Reaps Retention.” As a nurse manager, how might you incorporate positive discipline into your performance management approach?

What effect–good, bad, or indifferent–do you think it would have on your nursing staff?

By Day 3  Post a description of the performance appraisal system used in your workplace, including how performance standards are created and communicated to employees.

Describe the effectiveness of the performance appraisal system by sharing at least two strengths and two areas for improvement.

Conclude your posting by explaining how you might incorporate positive discipline into your performance management approach and what impact you think it will have.

Pioneering Challenges: Colonial Essays

Pioneering Challenges: Colonial Essays

(Pioneering Challenges: Colonial Essays)

Taking examinations is a skill that requires careful attention. There are generally three elements in developing a good essay answer: understanding the question, planning the answer, and then developing a thorough response. In planning the answer, you should prepare an outline or a list of points for discussion in a logical fashion. Be sure that the points are sufficient to answer the question. The essay should begin with a topic sentence that restates the question in declarative form. You should provide supportive information with specific detail to illustrate your points. References to readings and notes are always helpful. The essay should end by drawing appropriate conclusions. Please be sure to reread and recheck your essay for clarity, construction, errors, and to be sure that the answer makes a clear statement. You should properly cite all your sources, including textbooks and any other sources you use to develop your answer.

You are required to answer all four (4) questions. Your answers should be about 500 words in length.

  1. What set the Puritans (who arrived in America in 1630) apart from other early English colonists? During the first century of settlement they faced many challenges. Discuss these challenges and the Puritans’ responses to them.
  2. In 17th century North America the French, Spanish, Dutch, and English all jockeyed to obtain a share in the New World while the Native Americans fought to hang to what had once been theirs alone. The Africans became unwilling participants in this international contest. What were some of the long-term effects of the cross-cultural exchanges among these groups? Discuss both specific benefits and negative aspects in detail, illustrating your answer with examples from your reading.
  3. If you were a well-to-do 17th century European or Englishman looking to make a financial investment in the American colonies, would you choose to put your money in the New England area or the Chesapeake? How did the two areas differ in terms of family structure, work, class, religion, and state building? What impact would these things have on your decision to invest and why?
  4. In 1719 Daniel Defoe published his novel Robinson Crusoe. Set in 1651, the hero explains his circumstances:

Being the third son of the family and not bred to any trade, my head began to be filled very early with rambling thoughts.  My father, who was very ancient, had given me a competent share of learning, as far as house-education and a country free school generally go, and designed me for the law; but I would be satisfied with nothing but going to sea….My father, a wise and grave man, gave me serious and excellent counsel against what he foresaw was my design.  He called me one morning into his chamber, where he was confined by the gout, and expostulated very warmly with me upon this subject.  He asked me what reasons, more than a mere wandering inclination, I had for leaving father’s house and my native country…. He told me it was men of desperate fortunes on one hand, or of aspiring, superior fortunes on the other, who went abroad upon adventures, to rise by enterprise, and make themselves famous in undertakings….

Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe Philadelphia: Porter & Coates, 1870. Digital E Book on Goggle Books

If colonial America differed from England because it offered greater opportunities to both those of “desperate fortunes” or “superior fortunes”, the degree to which one could take advantage of these opportunities depended upon gender, race, ethnicity, and religion. Consider the ways in which three of these factors enabled some people to enjoy the promise of Colonial America more fully than others.

Changing Behavior CaseStudy Analysis

Changing Behavior CaseStudy Analysis

(Changing Behavior CaseStudy Analysis)

In analyzing a case study on changing behavior, several key components should be considered. Firstly, understanding the existing behavior and its underlying causes is crucial. This involves conducting thorough research, gathering data, and identifying patterns or triggers.

Next, devising a targeted intervention strategy is essential. This could involve implementing techniques from behavioral psychology, such as positive reinforcement or cognitive-behavioral therapy, tailored to the individual or group.

Evaluation of the intervention’s effectiveness is paramount. Utilizing quantitative and qualitative measures, such as surveys, observations, or interviews, can help assess changes in behavior over time.

Moreover, flexibility and adaptability are necessary throughout the process. Adjustments to the intervention may be needed based on feedback and evolving circumstances.

Lastly, sustaining behavior change requires ongoing support and reinforcement. This might involve implementing long-term strategies, establishing support networks, or providing continued education and resources.

In conclusion, analyzing and addressing behavior change requires a comprehensive approach, incorporating research, intervention, evaluation, adaptation, and long-term support.

(Changing Behavior CaseStudy Analysis)

For this assignment, you will examine how learning theories can be used to understand persisting behavior, as well as how an understanding of these theories can help change behavior.  First, select a bad habit or undesired behavior that a person might want to change from the following lists:  procrastination, binge drinking, swearing, excessive caffeine consumption, chronic lateness, smoking, fear of speaking in public, or frequent road rage. Now, suppose a client has come to you because they want to understand and change their behavior.

Address the following sections in your Case Study Analysis:

(a) Identification of Behavior (Introduction paragraph)

  • Briefly describe the client’s undesired behavior that he/she would like to change.  Include details related to how long the behavior has persisted, the severity/frequency, and how it impacts the person’s life.

(b) Based on what you have learned about classical, operant, and social learning theories, develop three brief descriptions (less than one page each), describing how each of the theories could help explain the development and/or persistence of the undesired behavior.  Include terms and concepts related to theories that are most relevant in the plan for the client as indicated below.

  • Plan 1: How could classical conditioning explain the development and the persistence of the client’s undesired behavior?  Include in your discussion coverage of the relationship between and unconditional stimulus, unconditioned response, conditioned stimulus, and conditioned response.
  • Plan 2: How could operant conditioning explain the development and persistence of the client’s undesired behavior? Include discussion of shaping and reinforcers (positive and negative), as well as punishments.  How could operant conditioning be used to help lessen or change the behavior?
  • Plan 3: How could cognitive and social learning theories explain the development and persistence of the client’s undesired behavior?  In particular, discuss the role of latent learning, learned helplessness, vicarious reinforcement and/or vicarious punishment as applicable.

(c) Recommendation – Conclusion Section: Now that you have examined scenarios related to the persistence of the undesired behavior, consider how you would recommend the client change their behavior.  Select one of the learning theories above and describe how it could be used to help the client lessen and change the desired behavior.

Wholistic Systems Nursing Interventions

Wholistic Systems Nursing Interventions

According to Smith & Parker (2015) Neuman based her systems model on wholism

(Wholistic Systems Nursing Interventions)

Question description

According to Smith & Parker (2015) Neuman based her systems model on wholism. A dynamic systems perspective of energy and variable interaction with the environment. Neuman also believed that a system is an order that holds together it’s parts. Each of us interact with, and exchange with our environment. This exchange can move us either to or away from a state of stability. Neuman referred to external forces as stressors that impact either positively or negatively the system of patient’s. Neuman goes on to say that each system is unique but includes physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental and spiritual components.

When a person becomes ill, these stressors have broken through the systems defense mechanism and are causing harm. From a nursing perspective it is the nurse’s responsibility to determine the appropriate intervention to counteract the stressor. This model can be applied to most any patient-nurse relationship in any setting. Although some patient’s cannot be brought back to a state of wholeness or wellness, they can be brought to a point where the stressors are controlled as much as possible.

Hardin (2016) states that clinical guidelines in Neuman’s Systems Model lend themselves nicely to a multidisciplinary perspective. Hospice is designed to function in a multidisciplinary fashion. Patient’s are cared for by nurses, social workers, aides, chaplains and counselors, and volunteers. In the world of Hospice, Neuman’s Model makes perfect sense, her model includes the physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual stressors of patient’s.

Hospice also views patient’s from a holistic standpoint, including all of the mentioned areas into the plan of care for the patient and family. Hospice clinicians realize that a force such as Cancer, COPD, CHF, etc. has invaded the patient system, and their defenses were not able to combat this invasion. Hospice clinicians also realize that the person cannot be returned to a point of wholeness or wellness, but efforts are made to mitigate the damages and suffering the patient experiences during this invasion of an outside stressor. Nursing outcomes are based on goals set by the patient/family and the clinician. As the patient achieves or does not achieve those goals, nursing outcomes can be evaluated, reassessed and adjusted to help move the patient to the desired goal.

Neuman refers to a diagnostic taxonomy, this organized client system, level of response, client subsystem responding to the stressor, the source of the stress and it’s type. Using this identifier a clinician can utilize Nuemans Model in most any clinical setting in order to formulate a plan of care. Neuman’s Systems Model encompasses the entire being, looking at every angle of a person’s system.  This model then guides the clinician to look for ways to determine what outside force may be attacking the patient’s system. From this, medical personnel can formulate a plan to alleviated the stressor and help bring the patient back to wholeness, or at least to a new “normal”. References Hardin, S., PhD. (2016, May 12) The Neuman Systems Model, Retrieved November 29, 2017, from http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download? doi=10.1.929.3458=rep=repl+typ=pdf Smith, M.C., & Parker, M.E., (2015).Nursing theories and nursing practice (7th ed.). Analyzing Basic Applied Research

Analyzing Basic Applied Research

(Analyzing Basic Applied Research)

Basic applied research aims to address practical problems through scientific investigation while expanding fundamental knowledge. It often explores theories in controlled settings, seeking real-world applications. Notable examples include medical breakthroughs like penicillin discovery by Alexander Fleming. (Reference: Fleming, A. (1929). On the antibacterial action of cultures of a penicillium, with special reference to their use in the isolation of B. influenzae. British Journal of Experimental Pathology, 10(3), 226-236.)

Analyzing Basic Applied Research

There are very different views of what types of evidence are most credible in evaluating the effectiveness of psychological treatment research. In this discussion you will analyze basic applied psychological research as well as evaluate how researchers applied a research process in the development of specific components. To begin, read the following articles (which can be accessed through the ProQuest database in the Ashford University Library):

  • “Evidence-Based Practice in Psychology: Implications for Research and Research Training”
  • “Practice-Based Evidence: Back to the Future”
  • “Psychological Treatments: Putting Evidence into Practice and Practice into Evidence”

After reading the articles listed above, select two of them.  Analyze the basic applied research within each of your two selected articles by answering the following questions:

  • What is the main point-of-view in each article?
  • What are the primary assumptions each author makes?
  • Which author are you inclined to agree with?  Support your choice with scholarly reasoning and cite your evidence.

You are required to include one peer-reviewed source that was published within the last five years to support your perspective.  You may not use any of the sources that were assigned for this course.  For assistance finding articles view the “Searching for Articles” and the “Peer-Reviewed Articles” tutorials which are available under Tutorials on the Getting Research Help tab at the top of the Ashford University Library homepage.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts. Provide a substantive response to at least two of your peers. As you respond to your peers, consider the following:

  • What evidence did they use to support their perspectives?
  • Do you agree or disagree with their conclusions?  Support your position with evidence from the articles.
  • What alternative conclusions could be drawn from the evidence they discussed?

  1. Kelly is a sophomore who attends a meeting of the all-male robotics club. She says she has an interest in joining the club and working on building a robot for an upcoming competition. The male members of the club snicker at her and one boy puts his foot out and “accidently” trips Kelly in the aisle. The male teacher in the room tells the boys to settle down, but he also tells Kelly that he isn’t sure she would have the necessary skills for the club, since the other members have all had several years experience building robots. “After all,” he said, “you were probably playing with dolls for all the years these boys were building things and experimenting with electronics.”
  1. John is an artistic, intelligent boy who is not interested in sports or other “typical” male pursuits. He enjoys writing fiction and poetry for the school newspaper. When he gets on the school bus no one will share a seat with him. He ends up standing and a group of students in the back of the bus harass and heckle him, calling him homophobic slurs.
  1. In the teachers’ lounge, a group of Caucasian teachers huddle around the water cooler gossiping about why one of their fellow teachers, an Asian-American woman, was promoted to assistant principle over other teachers with more years of experience. “I know she has a master’s degree, but I still think this is clearly an affirmative action thing—they just want to get more minorities in administration. They don’t care about who is really qualified, and that’s all there is to it.”

Select one of the examples above that you feel illustrates prejudiced attitudes. Answer the following:

  1. What elements of this scenario make it an example of prejudice?
  2. Is there also discrimination present?
  3. Is there stereotyping in this example?
  4. Explain why the predjudice is occurring using the following terms: Social categorization, in-group, out-group, and ingroup-bias.
  5. Based on your readings, what type of intervention could help to reduce prejudice in a situation like this?

Please be sure you address each question, using terms and concepts from your text. A good initial discussion response should be at least 150–250 words in length.
