Why This Course is Important

The subject matter in this course is important because travel and tourism is the number one industry in the world. It is essential to be aware of its importance globally and the implications concerning environmental, economic, and social issues (often referred to as the “triple bottom line”).

There is also much to learn in this course that applies to your own lives. Travel offers us adventure, education, and enjoyment. As we learn about other cultures we also learn more about ourselves; and we learn tolerance. We learn to extend compassion to help others less fortunate than we are. These are primary messages in our reading, Mountains Beyond Mountains.

On a broad scale, tourism offers hope for global peace as we learn more about the beauty and value of diverse cultures and learn to appreciate them through first hand experience. Tourism has also been promoted as a conservation tool as travelers gain global environmental awareness. Tourism offers hope for global stewardship. What larger issues are there than world peace and environmental sustainability? Tourism can contribute to both of these.

So this subject is relevant as the number one industry in the world, in our own personal lives, and in a larger context concerning global peace and environmental stewardship.

SDSU General Catalog: Concepts, definitions, and measures of essential cultural components of tourism. Integrated view of interrelated socio-cultural tourism issues with an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures.

Reading Study Guides

This policy is designed to help keep you on track with the reading assignments and to provide you full credit for completing the reading. A study guide will be posted for the book with the understanding that you must complete all the reading on your own (not just look up the answers or copy them from someone else). The book for this class is extraordinary and I encourage you to read it carefully for your own edification. Conscientious reading is also necessary for you to do well on the Portfolio.

Portfolio Project

The Portfolio Project is an opportunity to reflect on various dimensions of the class. This project stresses personal intellectual development, written communication skills, and practice of 21st century skills including information and technological literacy.

Academic Integrity

The faculty and staff demand the highest levels of academic and professional integrity in all work at San Diego State University. Plagiarism, cheating, or any other type of academic dishonesty will be referred directly to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities for disciplinary action.

Statement on What I Can and Can’t Do To Assist You

I will do everything within reason to actively support a wide range of learning styles. I will also do everything possible to make this class as well-organized and straightforward as possible so that students may be successful. My concern is for ALL of the students in the class, making sure that everything is fair, and that everyone has the opportunity to earn the highest grade possible.

For those who would seek special treatment:

Over many years of teaching I have found that, recently, the number of students who seek special consideration at the end of the semester has increased dramatically. This practice is especially common among students who have missed deadlines or done poorly on the midterm exam. Seeking special favors is not fair to all the hard-working students who have kept up with the course work over the entire semester and reflects a lack of integrity.

Furthermore, university policy does not allow professors to change grades or permit individual students to earn extra points without that same opportunity being available to every student in the class.

If you are concerned about your grade the time to do something about that is right now at the beginning of the class and throughout the full summer session.

If you must have a certain grade in the class to meet eligibility requirements for a major, a scholarship, athletics, or graduate school then it is your responsibility to see that you earn that grade. Out of respect for hard-working and honest students in the class, and university policy, I cannot provide special treatment for individual students. Although it is my hope that everyone is successful, that will ultimately be up to each of you. The course is designed to reward your efforts. If you want to do well in the class you will.

Accommodations for students with disabilities:

If you are a student with a disability and believe you will need accommodations for this class, it is your responsibility to contact Student Disability Services at (619) 594-6473. To avoid any delay in the receipt of your accommodations, you should contact Student Disability Services as soon as possible. Please note that accommodations are not retroactive, and that I cannot provide accommodations based upon disability until I have received an accommodation letter from Student Disability Services. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Atmospheric Science

Part #1: How much water and energy are in a small storm? (20 points)

The liquid water that is in a thunderstorm in the Midwest primarily comes from evaporated water from the Gulf of Mexico. When that water vapor condenses in the updraft of a thunderstorm, tiny liquid water droplets form and the storm is born. Let’s calculate how much water and energy is in a small thunderstorm complex – the kind that pop up on a hot summer day. Please find the total number of gallons of water in this storm and also the total energy content of the storm expressed in megatons and joules. You must show your work to get credit.

Assumptions:

Each cubic centimeter (cm3) contains 7.5*10-7 grams of water (7.5*10-7 g/cm3)

The storm’s dimensions are 20 km wide, 15 km long and 9 km tall.

1 gallon of water = 3785 grams of water

Each gram of water in the cloud releases 2260 Joules of energy as it forms those tiny cloud droplets (2260 J/g)

A 1-megaton nuclear bomb contains 4.18*1015 Joules of energy.

Water in the Atmosphere

Scenario: February is often a bitterly cold month and you may spend most of the month with a sore throat and cough. A doctor will recommend that you get a humidifier to help raise the humidity levels in your apartment. Before you turn on your humidifier, you decide to measure the relative humidity and air temperature in the room and find that the RH = 12.4% and the temperature is 68°F. Using this information answer the following questions. (Hint: check out figure 1.9 in the textbook and in the video lecture I provided***.)

  1. Write down the equation for relative humidity (RH) in the space below.

  1. What is the air temperature in Celsius?

  1. What is the saturation vapor pressure (SVP) of the air in your apartment?

  1. What is the vapor pressure (VP) of the air in your apartment?

  1. What is the dewpoint temperature (Td) of the air in your apartment?

Six hours after turning your humidifier on, you measure the humidity levels again and see that the relative humidity has risen to 50% and you are now finding some relief in your sore throat and your cough is gone. The air temperature has not changed. Answer the following questions.

  1. What is the dewpoint temperature in your apartment now that the RH is 50%?

  1. What is the vapor pressure (VP) of the air in your apartment now?

  1. What is the saturation vapor pressure (SVP) of the air in your room now?

  1. If you were to raise the air temperature in your room to 72°F, how would this change the relative humidity (increase, decrease or stay the same)? In one or two sentences, explain your answer.

*** Figure 1.9 shows the relationship between the SVP and Temperature. If you know the air temperature (in Celsius) you can find the SVP (in mb). This same chart can be used to find the vapor pressure (VP) if you know the dewpoint temperature (Td). This works because when the relative humidity is 100%, the VP = SVP and T = Td. So, as you are trying to answer questions #4 and #7 above, use Figure 1.9 to find the VP.

Topic: Fieldwork Assignment Sheet

COMS 3500: Contemporary Issues in Comm + Media Theory Fall 2017 || Dr. Liam Cole Young

Fieldwork Assignment Sheet

The Fieldwork assignment invites you to go out in the world in seek of data, impressions, observations, photographs, sound recordings, drawings, maps or any other material that furthers your understanding of the hidden infrastructure of digital networks and logistical systems. In consultation with me or your TA, you will choose a specific site for fieldwork—this can be on campus or off, but must be a public place. Brainstorm sites that you typically take for granted, but which—like the port lands, loading bays, shipping containers, and warehouses we will discuss in the course’s second half—are essential to our systems of civic, commercial, and communicative life. Regarding content and form, keep in mind:

(1) Your chosen site must be a public place and you must remain a passive observer. You may collect notes, draw sketches, take appropriate photographs, and make sound records of the area. However, you must ensure your site is not one where any people you encounter have a reasonable expectation for privacy (e.g. do not observe a public change room or make sound recordings in a lecture hall while class is happening). The idea here is that you are scouting infrastructure, not people, so it should be very easy to follow these guidelines. If you have an idea for a site that would require access or permission for entrance, please talk to Dr. Young well in advance to discuss.

(2) Successful projects will require careful planning. Start thinking early and do some research. Where might communicative, logistical, other kinds of infrastructure be located? A few ideas to get you thinking: shopping malls, Industrial districts and/or ports, University campuses, waterways, public libraries, etc.

You will compile your findings in a written report to be submitted on or before Nov. 27. This piece of writing is expected to be more expansive and rigourous than the podcast assignment. It is to be not less than 2000 words and must engage with at least 7 scholarly sources (at least three of which need be external to the course). Superior reports will include notes, drawings, photographs, or sound recordings as appropriate (either in-text or as appendices). You need to show us evidence that you actually did the fieldwork and weave it into your report. The goal here is to ground ideas from readings and discussions with the ‘dirt’ of place, history, and labour. A good way to think about the assignment is that it has three steps:

1. Conduct research about logistics and infrastructure (starting with course texts and working your way to sources external to the course)

2. Choose a site that you think will help to you learn more 3. Gather data and observations from that site 4. Synthesize preliminary research with findings from fieldwork in a way that allows you to draw

conclusions and/or make an argument about the infrastructure of culture, communication and/or commerce

COMS 3500: Contemporary Issues in Comm + Media Theory Fall 2017 || Dr. Liam Cole Young

Fieldwork marking guide A-range: Exceptional. Your fieldwork assignment shows evidence of care, thought and planning. Your research site is well chosen and allows you to explore themes from the course. You’ve collected a trove of interesting impressions, observations and other data. You weave them together in your research brief in thoughtful and compelling ways. Your analysis of the experience is grounded in keywords and themes from the course. You use relevant sources and have done solid research into the topic. It is clear that you’ve used the assignment to push your thinking about digital media networks and culture into exciting new directions. Overall, the assignment shows evidence of considerable effort over an extended period of time and a high level of engagement with course themes. You’ve taken this very seriously and put your best foot forward. B-range: Average or slightly above. Your fieldwork assignment checks most of the boxes but does not move much beyond minimum requirements. Your site is fine but perhaps a bit obvious. You’ve collected some interesting impressions, observations and other data, and you try to weave them together in your research brief in thoughtful ways. But your analysis is overly reliant on a few concepts, applies ideas from the course in superficial ways, or doesn’t show evidence of much research. There are some good insights here, but you don’t explore them with enough depth or sophistication. Overall, the assignment shows evidence of some effort but feels rushed and/or underdeveloped. Your take on infrastructure and fieldwork relies on commonplace understandings, though there are flashes of creativity. You’ve taken this seriously enough to check the boxes, and that’s fine, but this had the potential to be much more than it was. C-range: Below average or poor. Your fieldwork does not meet minimum requirements, or just barely scrapes by. You’ve gathered some material, but your site is not particularly well chosen and one gets the feeling this was rushed at the very last minute. You have not conducted a minimum standard of research into the topic. There is virtually no evidence that you sought to explore course themes in a creative way. Overall, the assignment shows little evidence of care or attention. There’s enough here for us to grade, but it’s disorganized and unconnected to the course. It’s disappointing to see almost no evidence that you tried to think about the assignment in a serious or creative way. D-range: Unacceptable. You did not follow assignment instructions and have instead slapped something together seemingly at the last minute. It’s a mess, but you probably know that.

Drup Proposal To Treat Cancer

Recent studies support the potential of a drug that is derived from the metal iridium to effectively treat cancer. This experimental drug, Drug ZL105, has not been tested for efficacy and toxicity. Imagine that you are the one responsible for approving or denying the use of this drug within the United States. Your job is to propose the testing that is needed for this drug to be determined as safe and effective for the treatment of cancer in humans.

In your research and discussion, you should address the questions below.

1. What model(s) will you use for testing (i.e., animal, cell cultures, computer simulations)? Explain the choice of model, and provide support for the reliability of the model. Discuss the pros and cons of your choice.

2. In determining the safety and effectiveness of the drug, would it be necessary to test efficacy, toxicity, and lethality? Explain what each of these tests are for and whether or not one or more of the tests are necessary for your determination.

3. Provide your thoughts on what information you hope to gather from your tests and whether or not the same protocol should be used for various categories of products such as drugs, cosmetics, and herbal medicines.

Your case study assignment should be three to four pages in length and utilize at least three reliable references. Use APA style guidelines in writing this assignment, following APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and referencing.
