Family Dollar is an American store chain that deals with variety of products. The firm has expanded in major cities in the United States of America with aver 8,000 locations in all states except Alaska,Hawaii,Oregon and the greater Washington District of Columbia. Family Dollar (FDO), is the among the largest retailer dealers of its types in the United States. Family Dollar deals with products such as clothing, cleaning supplies, home decor and various kinds of grocery. The industry has its headquarters in Matthews, which is a suburb of Charlotte, North Carolina. The firm has employed several people to work under the stores. It has employed 1,400 employees who take part in the daily activities of the organization to ensure that the customers are satisfied. In the year 2004, one of the investors and one of the major shareholders of the firm demanded that the firm be immediately put up for sale. This was because the firm was not doing well in terms of its growth and productivity.

Family Dollar Stores (FDO) has been affected by major problems and this has led to poor performance of the industry. One of the major issue affecting the firm is the poor wages that the company offers to its employees. The employees of Family Dollar Stores work for long hours and in return given low wages. The employees always complain of the poor working conditions in the company and this has discouraged them. They are not motivated well by the management. It is important for every organization to understand the importance of motivating its employees. Motivated employees are more productive when compared with the less motivated employees. Family Dollar lacks a sound wage system and this makes its employees less motivated. This makes them less productive and this has led to the failure of the firm. In many occasions, the employees say their managers struggle with tight budgets as the managers themselves are working for longer hours in order to cover the store’s extended extra hours.

As a task force leader, I have discovered that the main organizational issue affecting Family Dollar Stores is the issue that pertains employee payments. The employees of the firm are subjected to long working hours and in return paid low amounts of wages. The employees of the company report to work very early in the morning and leave the industry very late in the evening. In many occasions, the employees work for extra hours and they are not paid according to the number of hours they have worked. The employees are paid low wages and this has made them become less productive in the organization (Alvesson, & Sveningsson, 2015). They are not willing to work towards the success and growth of the industry because they feel less motivated. In reality, the employees should work for normal hours and for those who are interested to work for extra hours, the management of Family Dollar Stores should pay them according to the number of hours they have worked. This will make the employees feel motivated. Highly motivated employees ensures growth of the organization and this leads to the success of the company

Long working hours and low payments has negatively affected the growth of the industry because most of the time which was supposed to be used for other activities of the firm is lost. The time is used by the customers in complaining to the management on the state of poor working conditions which they are subjected into. In order to resolve this problem, the organization should develop a human resource team which shall be given the responsibility of ensuring that the employees’ issues are well taken care of. The human resource team should ensure that the employees working at Family Dollars Store are compensated fairly in order for them to provide the labor required. The organization should develop and implement a sound wage system, which ensures that the employees are remunerated fairly throughout the firm.

Well-motivated employees have less or no complaints and this makes them to work hard in their job to ensure that the goals of the organization are met.

The organizational culture of Family Dollar Stores affects the way people work towards the growth of the company. In many cases, various businesses have different ways of doing things in their organizations. All the managers of Family Dollar Stores wear uniforms during the working days in the company while the District managers wear suits despite the kind of work they are doing. For example, the district managers of the company dress in suits when they are stocking the shelves and transferring the merchandise. The employees of the firm are not supposed to talk to one another when carrying on with the daily duties in the company. The employees should only concentrate without communicating with their colleagues in the workplace. There is no individual who is supposed to talk to the other during the working hours in the company.

The company does not hire any single mothers or men with families because they do not pay enough wages that can sustain them and their families. The management thinks that the women and men having families to take care of will steal from them in order to pay for their needs and maintain their families. The clerks of the company take home a small amount of wages at the end of each single day. The managers are hired at 50 hours a week but within six weeks, they have to work for 64 hours per week. Each store in the company are run with a skeleton crew having only two employees working at any given time unless it is on a truck day where all the employees are working without too much talking.

The employees’ morale is usually very low in the firm since they are paid minimal wages and salaries. They feel less motivated and this has led to low productivity in the organization. Family Dollar Store has a tendency of firing people when it is not able to pay for their salaries. This is not desirable since there is no job security in the company. The employees do not receive any form of bonuses for the work they do for the company. This makes them feel less motivated hence low productivity in the company. The employees enter and leave the company at a higher rate and this leads to low productivity in the company.

Family Dollar Stores has a mission statement, which gives important information to various people in and outside the organization. The mission statement of the company is “For our customers A compelling place to shop by providing convenience and low prices for our associates a compelling place to work by providing exceptional opportunities and rewards for achievement for our investors a compelling place to invest by providing outstanding returns “The mission statement of the company provides a broad aspirational image of the company in the future. Family Dollar Stores has a slogan, which is very concise and is used to advertise the products of the company to the customers in order to increase the level of sales (Benschop, 2016).

The slogan of Family Dollar Stores is “My Family. My Family Dollar”.This has helped in selling the brands of the firm to the customers who are interested with the products. The firm has an official corporate website where important information regarding the company is posted for easy access. The website is www.familydollar.com .This site has been very useful for the company since it is used for making several important enquiries, which are necessary for the company. Every company should have an official corporate website where important information regarding the activities of the company are posted for easy access.

Family Dollar Stores faces many problems arising from various factors in the company. One of the company’s source of problems is the poor management of the organization. The managers of the company are not able to lead the team to perform towards the success of the organization. They do not have the right leadership skills, which are required for the success of an organization. The other major problem is competition. Family Dollar Stores faces a lot of competition from other large supermarkets in the region. Many companies have emerged and this has limited the growth and performance of the company. Lack of motivation on the employees has also been the root cause of problems for the firm.

The employees enter and leave the organization because of the low wages and salaries they get for the work they do in the firm. They are usually paid small amounts, which is not enough to sustain them and their families. Poor working conditions for the employees in the firm has also led to several issues in the firm. The employees are expected to work for long hours and in return get low wages (Bratton, & Gold, 2017). This has led to the rise of many complaints among the employees. Less motivated employees are less productive as compared to the employees who are well motivated. Through employee motivation, the morale of the workers is raised. The firm has poor ways of motivating its employees and this leads to low productivity.

Managing people from different cultures in an organization can be very challenging for the success of the organizations. The management of Family Dollar Stores should define the culture using an expanded definition that covers more than the race, color, sex, national origin and religion in order to ensure that the workers have been managed appropriately in the organization. The firm should hire people from all diversity to ensure that the company achieves the desired outcomes. The firm’s management should develop and implement a sound wage structure, which ensures that all the employees are rewarded fairly according to the kind of work that they do for the organization (Cascio, 2018).

The company should hire the human resource team to oversee the working conditions of the employees in the working environment. The company should conduct an employee survey to learn more about employee choices and preferences in terms of work styles and the way the managers provide feedback and working conditions for the employees.

There are several things which the management of Family Dollar Stores can do in order to resolve the issues that have been identified. One of the solutions is to develop and implement a sound wage structure, which will ensure that all the employees in the firm are rewarded appropriately according to the work they do for the organization. The management should put up a human resource team, which shall overlook at the issues related to the employees in the organization for example the working conditions (Miner, 2015). The employees should not be subjected to long working hours without paying them for the overtime. The human resource department should work together with the managers to ensure that the employees are hired without any form of discrimination. It is important for the management to offer employment for both men and women without considering who has a family and who does not. The employees should be promoted and given bonuses in order to make them work more for the company. This will lead to an increase in the level of productivity for the firm.

Several problems have affected the performance and growth of Family Dollar Stores. Among the problems, include such things as lack of appropriate salaries and wages to the employees in the firm, lack of motivating employees, poor working conditions that the workers are subjected into and the poor management practices in the organization. According to these findings, the management can take several steps in order to avoid such problems from affecting the performance of the company. The management of Family Dollars Stores should appoint a human resource team which will have the responsibility of ensuring that all the workers in the firm are well taken care of.

The human resource team will work with the manager to ensure that the employees are hired without any form of discrimination. This will ensure fairness in the way people are treated in the organization. The firm’s management should develop and implement a sound wage system which will ensure that all the employees in the organization are remunerated according to the work they do for the company. The sound wage system will ensure that the employees are paid for the extra hours they work in the company. The firm should motivate its employees well in order to attract and retain them in the work place (Pinder, 2014). The company should not allow its employees to leave the firm at higher rates since it is not desirable. Family Dollars Stores should ensure that it rewards all the employees through such things as bonuses in order to make them feel motivated. When the employees feel motivated, they are able to work actively towards the accomplishment of the firm’s objectives.

clarification if you have any questions at all.

When you have read and understood this unit’s assessment tasks, print out the Student Assessment

Keep a copy of all of your work, as the work submitted to your assessor will not be returned to you.

Assessment appeals

Each assessment task in this booklet consists of the following:

Assessment Task Cover Sheet

This must be filled out, signed and submitted together with your assessment responses.

If you are submitting hardcopy, the Cover Sheet should be the first page of each task’s submission.

If you are submitting electronically, print out the cover sheet, fill it out and sign it, then scan this and submit

the file.

The Assessment Task Cover Sheet will be returned to you with the outcome of the assessment, which will

be satisfactory (S) or unsatisfactory (U). If your work has been assessed as being not satisfactory, your

assessor will include written feedback in the Assessment Task Cover Sheet giving reasons why. Your

assessor will also discuss this verbally with you and provide advice on re-assessment opportunities as per

your RTO’s re-assessment policy.

Depending on the task, this may include

 resubmitting incorrect answers to questions (such as short answer questions and case studies)

The following written questions use a range of “instructional words” such as “identify” or “explain”, which tell

Carefully read the following:

You have been appointed as the Office Manager of a newly created team of office professionals. The

organisation that you work for is a medium sized company with three departments: accounts and finance;

multimedia, design and production; and business administration. Your new team consists of four staff,

employed to take care of the office administration. Your role is Office Manager, and it is your responsibility

to provide information and training for your staff.

You have decided to conduct a number of information and training sessions with the new staff, with the first

one focusing on Health and Safety. To assist with the session, you have decided to develop three

information handouts, which you will provide to, and discuss with, the staff.

You would also like to consult with your staff to identify further training needs with regard to Health and

Handout 1: Legislation

The purpose of this handout is to clearly and simply explain important information about legislation. Your

handout should:

 Explain the purpose of Work Health and Safety/Occupational Health and Safety WHS/OHS

legislation, including the function of a WHS/OHS Act, WHS/OHS regulation and Code of Practice.

 Provide an overview of WHS/OHS legislation including name of Act, regulations and examples of

code of practice.

 Outline key roles and responsibilities under WHS/OHS legislation.

 Include at least 3 references for further sources of useful information.

Handout 2: Identifying hazards and risk control in the office environment

The purpose of this handout is to provide information about identifying hazards and risk control, and

organisational procedures for dealing with hazards in an office environment.

You should briefly explain the process of identifying hazards and risk control and provide 5 common

examples of hazards that may occur in an office environment.

Choose one of the common hazards that you have identified and include a simple step-by-step procedure

for dealing with that hazard (risk control), using diagrams to illustrate each step where possible.

Your handout should also address and explain the hierarchy of control and how it is to be used in the

workplace.

Handout 3: WHS/OHS Consultation

The purpose of this handout is to explain the requirements for WHS/OHS consultation under legislation and

to indicate how the business communicates WHS/OHS legislation and consults with staff as indicated in the

organisation’s health and safety policy and procedure.

You should also explain why it is important for a business to conduct WHS/OHS communication and

consultation.

2. Send an email to your assessor with your handouts attached.

Your assessor will send you a return email advising you of the date and time of the meeting, as

well as the number of people who will attend the meeting.

You will need to print a copy of each handout for the number of people attending the meeting.

3. Conduct a hazard inspection

Prior to the meeting, assume you are required to conduct a hazard inspection of the meeting

space using the hazard identification checklist provided to you.

Your assessor will set up the room such that there will be at least two hazards for identification.

Complete the checklist in full using a pen.

You will also be required to record recommended corrective actions as well as future risk

control measures.

Hand this checklist to your assessor before you start the meeting.

You will be assessed on whether you have correctly identified the hazards and suitable

corrective actions and risk control measures.

4. Conduct the meeting

At the meeting, complete all of the following activities:

 Commence the meeting and explain the purpose of the meeting to staff.

 Provide a copy of the handout to each person attending the meeting.

 Go through each of the handouts with staff and offer the opportunity to ask questions.

 Answer questions clearly and concisely.

 Ask staff members about their WHS training requirements.

During the meeting, you are required to demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication

skills including:

 Speaking clearly and concisely

 Using effective non-verbal communication skills to encourage audience interest

 Responding to questions

 Asking questions to seek feedback

 Use of active listening techniques to confirm and clarify understanding.

5. Follow up from meeting

The next part of the assessment requires you to conduct research about health and safety

training to meet the identified needs of staff and develop a short report. The report should be

approximately one page, be clear and concise and professionally presented.

Your short report should include:

a. Summary of the training needs identified at the meeting.

b. The range of formal and informal options for meeting health and safety training needs.

c. Research and describe at least one external training opportunity. Include details of dates,

times and costs and the benefits of completing this training.

6. Follow up from the meeting

Assume that your Manager has agreed to the external training opportunity you have identified.

Send a short email to your team (your assessor) outlining the training that they will be required

to participate in, including the purpose and benefits of the training and associated details such

as when, where and duration.

Case Study 1: Hazard Reports

David Santos is the Manager of ABC Company and undertakes a monthly WHS review of work areas, using

Team Hazard Reports. David analyses the data and identifies any hazards that are of immediate or

foreseeable concern to report to the CEO of the company. Read the completed Team Hazard Report that

has been included and answer the following questions.

1. What dangers are presented by the hazards identified in the Team Hazard Report?

2. For each of the hazards, what risk control procedures would you put in place according to the

hierarchy of control?

3. Why is it important to ensure that hazard reports are promptly actioned?

4. You have been allocated some money for WHS training, according to the information written in

the Hazard Report from Andrew, what further training can you identify is required?

5. The following month, David receives another team report that identifies that while signs have

been placed up around the office about effective manual handling procedures, and one staff

member has been off work for 2 days each week during the last month because of a bad back

from lifting. What should David do? What kind of changes could David make to existing risk

controls to ensure that manual handling injuries are eliminated or drastically reduced?

on the team hazard record, the person’s name is Debbie (her surname is Smiles).

Abstract      
Two months ago, Sony optimistically predicted it would sell 27 million TV sets this year; on July 28, it slashed
the figure to 22 million and issued a profit warning. The television business, Sony’s biggest revenue generator,
is forecast to lose a billion dollars this year—following seven straight years of red ink. (PHG )Royal Philips
Electronics and several other longtime rivals have called it quits, saying they can’t compete as prices tumble
into commodity territory. But Sony Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer considers the TV unit vital to
helping sell products that work with the company’s sets, including Blu-ray players and its popular PlayStation
game consoles.      

 

On Aug. 1, Sony said it would not divest its TV business and the next day announced that a reorganization of the unit is in the works. There’s little fat left to cut. Stringer already has eliminated 30,000 jobs, entered into joint manufacturing ventures with rivals and shed assets.

 

Sony’s widescreen woes aren’t unique. Most major manufacturers are sitting on six- to 10-weeks’ inventory as consumers show scant interest in the latest features such as sets with Internet connectivity or those that can show movies in 3D, says (IHS) IHS iSuppli analyst Riddhi Patel. Not helping matters is the slew of smaller-screen devices such as iPads and iPhones that are competing for consumers’ disposable income.

Walmart.com’s sales are less than a fifth of Amazon.com, but a new division, @WalmartLabs, is experimenting

 

with social media and mobile apps. Since Wal-Mart Stores first ventured into cyberspace 15 years ago, the

 

Bentonville, Ark., company has struggled online. Early on, Walmart.com featured a clunky digital version of

 

the greeter who welcomes shoppers at each store. Walmart.com still doesn’t excel at features that are

 

commonplace on other major e-commerce sites, such as personalization and recommendations.

 

The company doesn’t disclose its online sales, but analysts say Walmart.com does about $6 billion a year in

 

business, less than 2 percent of total sales and well below Amazon.com’s $34 billion in 2010 retail revenue. For

 

a long time, Wal-Mart’s poor online performance didn’t much matter. The retailer built hundreds of

Supercenters every year in the late 1990s, and profits soared. Over the past two years, however, the company

 

has cut its new U.S. store development by half. Sales at domestic Wal-Marts open for at least a year have

 

declined in each of the last eight quarters. Over that time e-commerce has exploded, even among the lower-income households that are Wal-Mart’s core customers.

 

Chief Executive Officer Mike Duke has recently focused his company’s considerable firepower (and an $11 billion cash hoard) on improving its use of the Web. He bought a Chinese online merchant, is testing home delivery of fresh groceries ordered online in San Jose, and most significantly, has created @WalmartLabs. Run by Silicon Valley veterans Venky Harinarayan and Anand Rajaraman, the division is charged with bringing

Wal-Mart up to speed with innovations such as smartphone payment technology, mobile shopping applications,
and Twitter-influenced product selection for stores. It’s an ambitious attempt at a technological makeover, but
still might not be enough. One goal of @WalmartLabs is to use social media and mobile apps to get shoppers to

spend more at Wal-Mart’s physical stores. One-third of Wal-Mart customers own a smartphone, and the company is investing in tools for them. The plans for increasing online sales are more vague. The

@WalmartLabs division is testing an app that allows Facebook users to give gifts without ever clicking away
from the social network.

Abstract

 

The Bloomberg Businessweek article “Citigroup Hopes Small Really Is Beautiful” (Nov. 22-Nov. 28, 2010) discusses how Citigroup is expanding in small business lending. It is targeting U.S. companies with less than $20 million in annual sales and plans to hire about 200 bankers by the end of 2011 to court them. That would bring the number of small business bankers to about 500. Expanding the bank’s focus to include doctors, restaurants, and cabinet makers alongside Coca- Cola and wealthy individuals won’t be easy. It’s totally different and requires a good deal of monitoring.

 

The four largest banks by assets have been criticized by some entrepreneurs for tightening credit to small business after taking a combined $140 billion of federal bailout money. A record 41 percent of small business owners say they cannot get adequate financing. Banks with less than $10 billion in assets make 56 percent of the country’s small business loans. Larger banks are now trying to muscle in as losses stay high on home loans and commercial mortgages.

Abstract

 

The Bloomberg Businessweek article “United and Continental Reach for the Sky” (May 17, 2010) discusses the merger of United Airlines and Continental. The U.S. aviation history is littered with the debris of airline mergers. Jeff Smisek, the CEO to be of the combined airline, will have to figure out a way to generate profits at

the combined carrier after annual losses at UAL and Continental in each of the past two years. He will have to navigate a tough U.S. antitrust review and work with restive unions that had demanded the ouster of United CEO Glenn Tilton, who is staying on as nonexecutive chairman of the combined carrier.

 

Key to Smisek’s success will be his ability to realize $1.2 billion in combined cost savings and new revenue,
while funneling additional traffic from the expanded United-Continental domestic network into its more  
lucrative international routes. Just managing the sheer logistics of the combined airlines will be a huge    
undertaking. Traditionally, the key task has been harmonizing work rules and consolidating union seniority lists
into a single worker roster. Smisek must also convince regulators that the Continental-United marriage will not
significantly reduce competition. Some industry insiders believe regulators may force route divestitures or the
sale of some of United and Continental’s takeoff and landing slots at coveted airports in the New York and  
Washington areas.

Once upon a time, not long ago, a bunch of small companies in Silicon Valley thought the future of television
was theirs. Soon, the thinking went, TV would be everywhere, including laptops and cell phones. The network
suits and the cable guys just didn’t have the digital chops to make it happen. Fueled with venture money, tech
companies with names like Boxee, Roku, and Sezmi pursued their dream of untethering viewers from their TV
sets – and owning a piece of the advertising revenue.    

 

As the big picture comes into focus though, it looks like the cable guys are playing the lead roles, using the $12 billion they pay content providers each year as leverage. The cable guys came up with a quick fix, so that you don’t have to be a geek to get it: Viewers can watch shows for free, but only if they’re cable subscribers. However, unless most of the pay TV and content players band together, this idea, called TV Everywhere, wouldn’t work; viewers could simply flock to sites that don’t require a cable subscription.

 

Comcast’s service is the furthest along and provides a window on where TV Everywhere is headed, according

 

to the Bloomberg BusinessWeek article, “Revenge of the Cable Guys” (March 22, 2010). Only subscribers who

have Comcast’s broadband service are eligible. Subscribers can tune into two dozen channels and view 19,000 full-length TV shows and movies. They can use it on as many as three PCs and get most episodes 24 hours after they first air on TV. Eventually, Comcast aims to let subscribers access this content on their smartphones and tablets.
