Social Work Vignette

SEVEN ACTIVE LISTENING TECHNIQUES

1. Minimal Encouragements Sounds made, especially on the phone, to let one person know the other is there and listening. Such as, “Oh?”, “When?”, and “Really?”. They are questions, comments, or sounds that do not interfere with the flow of conversation, but do let the subject know that he/she is being heard. They help build rapport and encourage the subject to continue talking.

2. Paraphrasing A summary in your own words of what you were told. Demonstrates listening, creates empathy and establishes rapport because it is evident that you have heard and understood. Usually, paraphrasing begins with the words, “Are you telling me…” or “Are you saying…” Paraphrasing also clarifies content, highlights issues and promotes give and take between you and the subject. It tends to make the subject a better listener.

3. Emotion Labeling This is often the first active listening skill to be used in a crisis communication incident. It is important to be attuned to the emotion behind the words and facts. Commonly, we all want to get into problem-solving too early. Too early an approach to problem solving is doomed to failure because the subject is often not ready to reason and you have not listened enough to get all of the information you need to assist in problem solving. Common phrases for you to use are, “You sound…”, “You seem…” , “I hear…” (emotion heard by you). You do not tell people how they are feeling, but how they sound to you as if they are feeling. Do not be concerned about making a mistake in labeling emotions. The subject will correct you and will often appear grateful for the attempt. Be aware of missing emotions and listen for conflicts in the feelings expressed, especially if they appear inappropriate to the situation.

4. Mirroring (or Reflecting)

This is the technique of repeating the last word or phrase and putting a question mark after it. This provides very exact responses because you are using the subject’s own words. Reflecting or mirroring asks for more input without guiding the direction of the subject’s thoughts. It is an effective way to let the subject know that you are listening and for the subject to “hear” what he/she is saying.

5. Open-Ended Questions The primary use of open-ended questions is to help a subject start talking. Asking open- ended questions encourages the person to say more without actually directing the conversation. They are questions that cannot be answered with a single word such as “yes” or “no”. Open-ended questions get information for you with fewer questions, those that usually begin with how, what, when and where. Note that “why” questions are not asked directly. “Why” questions tend to steer the conversation toward blame and shut down communication. “Why” questions also tend to pass judgment. Closed-end questions can give a feeling of interrogation that makes rapport building difficult. They also can prevent any additional information from being shared organically.

6. “I” Messages “I” messages let the subject know how he/she is making you feel, why you feel that way, and what the subject can do to remedy the situation. This is a non-threatening approach and does not put the subject on the defensive. “I” messages can be effective when communication is difficult because of the intense emotions being directed at you.

7. Effective Pauses Silence can be very effective on a number of levels. Most people are not comfortable with silence and will fill it with talk. It is to your advantage to keep the subject talking. Silence can also be used to emphasize a point. You can use silence just before or just after saying something significant or provocative.

Post A Description Of At Least Two Areas Related To Data Analysis And Outcome Dissemination About Which You Would Like To Further Professionally Develop Beyond The Course. Explain How You Will Use These Interests Or Challenge Areas As Catalysts For Profes

Discussion: Data Analysis and Dissemination

“I don’t know.” Not knowing something is difficult for many people to admit for a variety of reasons: they don’t want to look unknowledgeable, they want to impress someone, or they are afraid of the truth. However, admitting what you do not know is a critical component of being a reflective practitioner. If you only focus on the things you know, you will stagnate. You will never explore new ideas, read innovative research, or improve your practice. In other words, you can never become stronger unless you focus on recognizing and developing your weaknesses.  In this Discussion, you complete a self-reflection regarding areas in program evaluation about which you feel confident and those in which you are not as confident. You will explain how you will use these weaker areas as catalysts for professional development and what resources you need to complete the task.   To Prepare  This week’s Learning Resources outline techniques that may be used for data analysis and outcome dissemination in program evaluation. You are asked to complete a self-reflection this week regarding areas in these two steps of program evaluation about which you feel confident and those in which you feel you need more professional development.

By Day 3  Post a description of at least two areas related to data analysis and outcome dissemination about which you would like to further professionally develop beyond the course. Explain how you will use these interests or challenge areas as catalysts for professional development and how you will grow your knowledge in these areas, or what resources you might use to complete tasks cooperatively as an evaluation team.

US & Iran Coup

Please read and follow instructions carefully. Respond to each instruction on the page

The U.S. & Iranian Coup d’État of 1953

Question: In 600 words, respond to the prompt:

Why did the President Eisenhower decide to join Great Britain in overthrowing the Iranian government in contrast to President Truman who refused to do so? What had changed? Was it the right choice?

Instructions:

Write 600 words at least to answer this question. It should be posted as a “Word” file. Read over the directions for writing your essays provided on the first page of the syllabus to make sure that you are clear about what is necessary to do well on this essay. Make sure to use footnotes and to add a “List of Sources” at the end of your essay.

These paper should be grammatically and syntactically correct and without typographical errors. Include the question you are answering on the title page so both you and I will be sure which question you are addressing. Special attention will be given to the thesis paragraph. Make it succinct and preview how you will argue your paper. Always end with a concluding paragraph that sums up your argument.

Citations: Use footnotes, or what is called the “Notes and Bibliography” form of citation for your references (not the internal: “author date” style common in the social sciences). The first citation of a work should be complete and subsequent citations abbreviated. Read about how to use this form of citation at Quick Guide of the Chicago Manual of Style. Learn how to use footnotes (not endnotes on “Word.”

List of Sources: Be sure to add a “List of Sources” at the end of your essay, in which you list all the sources that you cite. Each article must be referenced in full. Consult the website of the Chicago Manual of Style to do this correctly. Make sure you cite internet sources correctly as well.

SECTION 2

Academic writing guidelines

Introduction:

This paragraph is extremely important in order to get the reader engaged in your work. Make sure you set the scene for the whole essay in a clear way. Clarify the topic and the aim of the essay. Keep in mind that the reader might not be familiar with your topic. Provide explanations for all relevant terms and briefly provide an overview of the structure of the essay. Avoid lengthy discussions or explanations regarding definitions or related research. Such discussions should be incorporated in the main body of the essay.

Discussion:

In the main body of the essay you should demonstrate an in depth critical examination of basic and seminal research and theories within the core reading for this module. Furthermore, a very good essay will show in depth evidence of advanced research and theories beyond the core readings which have been provided.

Important to remember that this section should not merely be a descriptive presentation of information. It should be a critical discussion which includes all viewpoints or argument perspectives relating with the essay’s question.

Although students should not use subheadings for this academic essay, there should still be a clear structure to the whole essay (i.e. Introduction paragraph(s), Discussion paragraph(s) and Conclusion paragraph(s). Students should try and present each paragraph in a logical and cohesive order. In addition, students need to ensure that the initial sentence in each paragraph captures the essence of the paragraph and that the last sentence summarises the paragraph (appropriate use of linking words and phrases is essential).

Conclusions

The conclusion should be a summary of the essay’s main concepts. It should start by elaborating on the main sentence that the essay began with (e.g., ‘In conclusion, the essay focussed on…etc.). It is important to connect the conclusion(s) to all key components of the title and aims. In addition, if applicable, students should consider recommendations for future research and/or improvements in the area.

Please keep in mind that headings (e.g., Introduction/Discussion/Conclusion) should not be included in your final essay.

General Tips

 Be consistent and use correct grammar, punctuation and spelling throughout the essay.

 Writing style should be in the third person.

 You should use the APA reference style for in text citations and references.

 Create a “References” section at the end of your work.

 Please note that Wikipedia will NOT be accepted as an appropriate reference for the essay.

 If needed, ‘Appendices’ may be used to direct the reader to supporting and complementing material

File & Submission:

1)    Save your file in .doc or .pdf format – I cannot comment in other formats using Moodle.

2)    Name your file in the following format: yourlastname.fourthessay

3)    Submit your paper at the link on Moodle (under Week 5 on the mainpage).

Prompt: For many decades, anthropologists tended to think of culture as a worldview shared by a group of people living in a particular place. It was considered perfectly clear reasonable to speak of the “culture of the Nuer” or of “German culture.”

Beginning in the later 20th century, our focus began to shift in ways that challenged some of the assumptions behind this consensus-based, place-bound view of culture: greater attention to the dynamics of power and inequality; increasing awareness of the importance of history and a new focus on divisions within societies and interconnections between them.

In your essay, discuss how paying attention to one or more of these aspects of social life requires us to adjust our understanding of culture. Draw on specific examples from two of the readings from this week (Abu-Lughod, Schepper-Hughes and Ernst) to support your argument.

Psychoanalytical Theories and Attachment Theory

Psychodynamic theory and its derivatives can be traced to the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. You likely are familiar with the image that often conjures Freud: A client lying on a couch with a therapist sitting nearby, notepad in hand. The psychoanalytic terms “id,” “ego,” “superego,” “repression,” and “unconscious” are deeply embedded in the layperson’s jargon.

Many theories have sprung from Freud’s psychoanalytical principles. Attachment theory is one example. Its originator, John Bowlby, was directly influenced by Freud, but because of Bowlby’s experiences in working with disturbed children, he believed that a child’s psychosocial development is linked to their attachment to the mother. Because all theories must be tested using empirical research methods, Mary Ainsworth tested John Bowlby’s theory using the Strange Situation experiment, which involved observing children react to caregivers and strangers. The results from her research led to what we now know as attachment styles.

This week, you switch your lenses to consider a case study through these theories.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Summarize the assumptions of psychoanalytical theories and attachment theory
  • Evaluate the strengths and limitations of psychoanalytical and attachment theories
  • Develop reflection questions to apply attachment theory in social work practice
  • Apply attachment theory to a social work case study

Discussion: Evaluating Psychoanalytical Theory

Sigmund Freud is often hailed as the father of psychoanalytical theory. His theory was the first to point to the influence of early childhood experiences. However, psychoanalytical theory has received a lot of criticism. Although theories are supposed to be objective and value-free, they are developed within a sociocultural and political context. For example, with historical perspective, it is possible to see that values within the Western Victorian era influenced Freud as he developed his theory. Another criticism is that many psychoanalytical concepts cannot be measured. For example, how do you measure the id, ego, and superego or the notion of unconscious conflicts? As a result, it is difficult to test the accuracy of these concepts using social science research methods.

It is important to critically evaluate theories for their practical use. For example, is it appropriate to use a theory when working with diverse populations or with populations different from those with whom the theory was normed (e.g., women, racial and ethnic minority groups, those who are economically disadvantaged)? Finally, are the assumptions of theories consistent with the values underlying the field? In this Discussion, you respond to some of these concerns.

To prepare, read the following from the Learning Resources:

  • Auld, F., Hyman, M., & Rudzinski, D. (2005). How is therapy with women different? In Resolution and inner conflict: An introduction to psychoanalytic therapy (pp. 217–236). Washington DC: American Psychological Association.

By Day 3

Post:

  • Summarize the assumptions of Freud’s psychoanalytical theory in 2 to 3 sentences.
  • Explain whether you believe it is appropriate to apply psychoanalytic theory to women and individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups.
  • Explain whether you believe psychoanalytic theory is consistent with social work values and social work ethics.
By Day 5

Respond to at least two colleagues:

  • Compare your response with your colleague’s. Identify any insights you gained from your peer’s response.
  • Discuss whether or how to address values related to the development and use of a specific theorywhen working with clients.

Assignment: Application of Attachment Theory to a Case Study

As you have read, theory guides the conceptualization of the client’s problem and how social workers assess and intervene relative to the problem. However, theory can also shape the self-reflective questions social workers ask themselves. Clients often come to social workers under stress or distress. This then affects how the social worker responds and thus the client-social worker relationship. As a result, Foley, Nash, and Munford (2009) employed attachment theory as a “lens in which to view the reflective process itself and to gain greater understanding and empathy for what each social worker within each unique social work-client relationship can access of that relationship for reflection” (pp. 44).

This week, you will apply attachment theory to the case study you chose in Week 2. In other words, your theoretical orientation—or lens—is attachment theory as you analyze the case study.

To prepare:

  • Review the same case study you selected from last week’s Assignment. (Remember, you will be using this same case study throughout the entire course). Use the “Dissecting a Theory and Its Application to a Case Study” worksheet to help you dissect the theory. You do not need to submit this handout. It is a tool for you to use to dissect the theory, and then you can employ the information in the table to complete your assignment.
  • Review attachment theory and the following article listed in the Learning Resources: Foley, M., Nash, M., & Munford, R. (2009). Bringing practice into theory: Reflective practice and attachment theory. Aotearoa New Zealand Social Work Review, 21(1/2), p39–47. Retrieved http://dx.doi.org/10.11157/anzswj-vol21iss1-2id318
By Day 7

Submit a 1- to 2-page case write-up that addresses the following:

  • Summarize the assumptions of attachment theory in 2 to 3 sentences.
  • Identify the problem in your chosen case study to be worked on from an attachment theoryperspective.
  • Explain how attachment theory defines and explains the cause of the problem in one to two sentences.
  • Develop two assessment questions that are guided by attachment theory that you would ask the client to understand how the stress or distress is affecting the client.
  • Discuss two interventions to address the problem. Remember, the theory should be driving the interventions. In other words, you would not identify systematic desensitization since this is not an intervention guided by attachment theory.
  • Formulate one self-reflective question that is influenced by attachment theory that you can ask yourself to gain greater empathy for what the client is experiencing.
  • Explain which outcomes you could measure to evaluate client progress based theory.

Be sure to:

  • Identify and correctly reference the case study you have chosen.
  • Use literature to support your claims.
  • Use APA formatting and style.
    • Remember to double-space your paper.

Social Work Class 6200

Assignment: Abortion Laws and Ethical Considerations

For social workers, the potential conflict between personal and professional ethics can be a source of great contention. Abortion is a highly politicized and contested topic. It is also one that reflects great diversity in terms of opinion, personal and professional ethics, and legal stances varying from state to state. For this Assignment, consider the topic of abortion, the laws of abortion that exist in the state or country in which you reside, and your own opinions on the topic. Also consider the relationship between your personal and professional ethical stance on the topic and how that may affect your interactions with clients.

By Day 7

Submit a 2- to 4-page paper that explains what you discovered about the laws of abortion in your state or country and why this information might be shared with clients. Further, explain your personal stance on abortion and how your ethical entanglements might impact your work with clients given the professional social worker ethic. Please use the Learning Resources to support your answer.
