After reading, “A Critique of Utilitarianism” by Bernard Williams, answer the following questions:

  1. What are Williams’ main objections to utilitarianism?
  2. Williams brings two cases that pose difficulties for consequentialists; those who believe in utilitarianism. In the first case, should George take the job with the chemical company? If so, why? If not, why not?
  3. In the second case Williams presented, should Jim, the honored guest, shoot one of the Indians or allow Pedro to kill all of them? If so, why? If not, why not?
  4. Is there a difference between “Allowing” someone to die, and “Killing” someone? If so, what is the difference? If not, then why not?

Post your thoughts and comments to all the above questions.
