ACTION RESEARCH

Unit 3 Discussion

ACTION RESEARCH

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has identified several content areas essential for the HR professional. One of these is Change Management, another is Organizational Development. Change Management is a broad field and addresses approaches used to effect change in organizations, which include, dimensions of change, leading, planning, and implementing change as well as stages of change management. The focus of Change Management is supporting individuals in a change process. HR410 addresses Organizational Development, which has a focus on the organization. Organizational Development is a planned process of change using systematic approaches to improve the effectiveness of an organization. One systematic approach used in Organizational Development is the ADDIE Model as it is a systematic approach intended to improve the effectiveness of an organization. The Analysis component of ADDIE is particularly relevant as it used to identify gaps in organizational effectiveness between an organization’s current and desired state. This discussion will review another systematic approach used in Organizational Development. The Action Research Model has wide application. You will find the Action Research Model useful both in Organizational Development, and in other areas of your professional and personal life.

Figure 18.1 in Organizational Behavior in Health Care, Chapter 18 identifies the eight steps in Action Research. Table 18.1 displays these eight steps (Burke, 1982) simplified into four steps as developed by Cummings and Worley (1997).

How would you explain the eight steps in the Action Research Model using your own words? Critique the Action Research Model. What are its strengths, what are its gaps? Using the four Action Research steps described by Cummings and Worley (1997) described in Table 18.1, which step would you find most challenging and why?
