1. Richard: I found the portion on Dadd to be very interesting. The artist Richard dad seemed destined for greatness when he took a life-changing tour across the Middle East. He was an Victorian artist and in many ways was very lucky as he had open-minded people who cared for him. He started behaving erratically in the last leg of the 10-month trip his increasingly bizarre behavior and the outlandish assertion that he’s acting under the influence of the Egyptian god Osiris was dismissed as an acute case of sunstroke. But in the end they found out it was the start of delusional episodes and psychotic behavior that in the end ended with him murdering his father. What always staggers me is that some people that have these long-term mental illnesses are in their own way amazing genius’s and talents. It is just like Richard dadd . He had a mental illness and yet he produced these amazing works of art that are shown all over. For me his story is both sad and full of Hope it’s sad because the legacy of his work clearly shows that he was a man with Talent and yet it blows me away how a brain can function and create useful detailed Fine Art and yet be so destructive.
2. Richard: Probably no aspect of behavior is more challenging to understand than psychopathology–the study of mental disorders. In everyday life, people often talk about “mental illness”, a term which echoes the medical background of many mental health practitioners. Some of the biological factors of abnormal behavior includeDefective genes. Each chromosome contains thousands of genes (carriers of DNA) that influence psychological and physical development. Defective genes may adversely affect development. Another is structural brain abnormalities. They occur when areas of the brain have not developed optimally or have undergone pathological changes. The next is Neurotransmitter imbalances: The 100 billion neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) communicate by chemical messengers called neurotransmitters, which can become imbalanced. Biological approaches to treatment focus mainly on medications that address neurotransmitter imbalances.Neurotransmitters (e.g., serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, GABA) are released into the synaptic cleft. They regulate level of mood, anxiety, and cognitive functioning, and Hormones. These are chemicals that are secreted by the endocrine glands. They play a role in the functioning of the nervous system and in the regulation of behavior. The list goes on further but I only went through some of them, but there are a lot of factors that play a role in abnormal behavior.
3. Nichole: As the video started to play they gave a scenario of the “blonde’s” having the reputation of being killers. They interviewed a few people about it and one woman stated that all the blonde’s would be locked away someplace far away to protect the townspeople. This must have been what it was like to been like, a possibly still like today having been diagnosed with mental illness. An interesting fact is that only 8% of people diagnosed with mental health problems are likely to be violent. The fear that people have is merely from being uneducated, and scared because of that. The people with mental health diagnosis that were interviewed explained that they felt misunderstood, and really didn’t have a way to communicate their side. Also it seems the stereotyping of people with mental health issues was scary in itself, most believe they are killers, unstable, do not want them around their families, etc. Also the communities do not want the facilities in their neighborhoods, exclaiming that they don’t want “those people” around scaring their children. Also, the medical professionals lacked training to work with certain diagnosis’s and required more knowledge, and compassion. The discrimination that is displayed by so many people against people diagnosed with mental health is very sad. Also, scary because as we learned in the chapter, 1 in 4 people have a mental health issue.(Mental Health Media, 1998).
