After reading, “A Critique of Utilitarianism†by Bernard Williams, answer the following questions:
- What are Williams’ main objections to utilitarianism?
- Williams brings two cases that pose difficulties for consequentialists; those who believe in utilitarianism. In the first case, should George take the job with the chemical company? If so, why? If not, why not?
- In the second case Williams presented, should Jim, the honored guest, shoot one of the Indians or allow Pedro to kill all of them? If so, why? If not, why not?
- Is there a difference between “Allowing†someone to die, and “Killing†someone? If so, what is the difference? If not, then why not?
Post your thoughts and comments to all the above questions.
