Critiquing the validity and robustness of research featured in journal articles provides a critical foundation for engaging in evidence-based practice. In Weeks 5 and 6, you explored quantitative research designs. In Week 7, you will examine qualitative and mixed methods research designs. For this Assignment, you will critique a quantitative and either a qualitative or a mixed methods research study and compare the types of information obtained in each.

To prepare:

· Select a health topic of interest to you that is relevant to your current area of practice- (Pediatric Nursing). The topic may be your Course Portfolio Project or a different topic of your choice.

· Using the Walden Library, locate two articles in scholarly journals that deal with your portfolio topic: 1) Select one article that utilizes a quantitative research design and 2) select a second article that utilizes either a qualitative OR a mixed methods design. These need to be single studies not systematic or integrative reviews (including meta-analysis and metasynthesis). You may use research articles from your reference list. If you cannot find these two types of research on your portfolio topic, you may choose another topic.

· Locate the following documents in this week’s Learning Resources to access the appropriate templates, which will guide your critique of each article:

· Consider the fields in the templates as you review the information in each article. Begin to draft a paper in which you analyze the two research approaches as indicated below. Reflect on the overall value of both quantitative and qualitative research. If someone were to say to you, “Qualitative research is not real science,” how would you respond?

Psychodynamic theories of psychology emphasize the role of the unconscious mind and early childhood experiences in personality development. Despite the far-reaching influence of psychodynamic theories on the evolution and current state of psychology as a discipline, there were many initial criticisms about the relevance and validity of these theories. One criticism of early psychodynamic theories is that they fail to account for one’s free will in the relationship between early childhood experiences and subsequent behavior. Initial theories suggested that personality and existing behavior were directly and solely determined during childhood. Another criticism is what some perceived to be the lack of scientific rigor with which the theories were developed. For example, Freud’s theories were based on case studies of mostly middle class, white Victorian women. Therefore, critics argued that his theories could not be generalized or applied beyond this narrow population of patients. Another criticism of psychodynamic theories was that many of the related concepts and processes (e.g., the unconscious, ego, childhood memories, feelings of inferiority, symbolism, and interpretation of dreams) could not be objectively measured or easily replicated. This criticism gave rise to the emergence of behaviorism, which sought to establish psychology as a science through the objective and observable measures of external stimuli and behaviors.

Fortunately, researchers have attempted to address some of the criticisms of early psychodynamic theories by studying and testing the theories in a wide range of contexts. In this discussion, you will select a study involving one psychodynamic theory of interest to you and determine if and how the results supported the theory or contributed to its evolution.

Assignment Overview:

Identify a commonsense or working theory that you use that could be a scholarly theory if there were any systematic research to support it.  Analyze the theory in terms of the evaluation criteria presented in the textbook (Dainton & Zelley, 2019).  Propose a way to study the theory to assess its applicability in the “real world.”

Structure of the Paper:

Paragraph 1: Identify a commonsense or working theory that you are familiar with or that you use in your daily life.  Clearly label it as a commonsense or working theory.  Briefly describe the theory. (NOTE:  Do not use any of the examples discussed in class.)

Paragraphs 2-6: Analyze the theory in terms of the evaluation criteria discussed in the textbook and in class (i.e., accuracy, practicality, succinctness, consistency, and acuity).  Write one paragraph on each criterion and how it applies to the theory.

Paragraph 7: Discuss whether or not the theory is a good theory based on these criteria.  If it does not meet all of the criteria, does that make it a “bad theory” or are some criteria more important than others?

Paragraph 8:  Propose one way to test this theory using one of the four methods of communication research discussed in the textbook (Dainton & Zelley, 2019) and in class (i.e., experiments, surveys, textual analysis, and ethnography).

As the examining psychologist, you are required to comment on the applicants’ social comprehension, judgment, impulse control, potential for violence, and/or any psychological traits that might render her or him psychologically at risk to be certified. Other Testing Methods: If (after conducting the required test) the licensed psychologist is unable to certify the applicant’s psychological capability or risk to exercise appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer, the psychologist is directed to personally employ whatever other psychological measuring instrument(s) and/or technique(s) deemed necessary to form her or his professional opinion. The use of any such instrument(s) and/or technique(s) requires a full and complete written explanation to the commission.

For the purposes of this discussion, assume the interview and history information reported to you by Mr. C. and Ms. D. is unremarkable and that neither candidate communicated anything to you during the interview that raised concerns about her or his capabilities to exercise appropriate judgment and restraint to be certified as a police officer. Review the MMP1-2-RF Police Candidate Interpretive Reports for Mr. C. and Ms. D. and evaluate the professional interpretation of this testing and assessment data from an ethical perspective.

Follow the rationale with a brief comparison of any additional assessment instruments you recommend administering beyond the MMPI-2-RF. Debate the pros and cons of using other assessments.
