This assignment allows you to assess and defend the reasonableness of personal beliefs through critical assessment of Singer’s arguments and the presentation of your own, original arguments on the subject.

Review the following:

Develop a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation summarizing the main points of the article. Keep in mind that while bullet points are acceptable, complete sentences should be used throughout the presentation.

Complete the following:

  • Describe the portions of Singer’s article you seek to engage/critique.
  • Using the tools of evaluation you have learned throughout the course, create an original argument in response to Singer’s article that advances your own thesis in light of Singer’s argument. Clearly state your argument position, using complete sentences to do so.
    • Remember the nature of the stance is not important; you can agree or disagree with any point Singer makes within this article. The important thing is you construct a stance that clearly engages a portion of Singer’s text. Including properly cited examples from the article is suggested.
    • As you advance your own thesis, be sure to include your position on how to address the problems that Singer discusses in his article. Again, you may agree or disagree with Singer; however, be sure to offer your own solutions to the issue of world poverty, as discussed by Singer.
  • Support your argument with the use of original research. Use at least three credible, academic resources to support your positions. These should be sources other than Singer’s “America’s Shame” article.

Kelly, a new faculty member who recently completed a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a focus on Nursing Education, has been an instructor on a team of nursing instructors for six months. Details about Kelly’s work environment include:

1-I know here in Oregon a free breakfast is given to all children no matter the parents income. If the child falls under the poverty level they can get free or reduced lunch. The school for years ago, installed a backpack program for kids in a very low income family. The packs were filled with food to last the kids through the weekend or on long weekends or breaks. Oregon also has the free lunch program in the summer for all children under the age of 18 Monday through Friday. We do have poverty and homeless, but we do our best to take care of our community members.

 

2-What I have found in the past to be very frustrating is the fact that I have seen a family of 6 get food stamps with a monthyly balance of just under $800. I don’t even spend close to that amount per month for my family of 4. That is plenty of money to buy very, very healthy! I know that the amount families get depends on family size and income. I have also been in line with people infront of me buying prime rib, lobster, and other expensive items and then pay with food stamps. Those things are healthy, but how is that using the money wisely to last the rest of the month. There might be a problem with parents also just buying convience food just for that fact, they don’t have to send time to prep and then cook the food. I know, there are families out there that use the money responsibly and try to be as healthy as possible. But, with the rise in child obesity, those families might be far and few between.(Childhood Obesity and Food Access)

 

3-We are hearing more and more about childhood obesity and how it is becoming more prevalent in our society today. School age children are at a critical point health wise in their growth cycle when it comes to the ability to grow excess fat (Lee, 2012).  According to Daniel L. Millimet, Rusty Tchernis, and Muna Husain,  childhood obesity in school aged children has risen from 4 percent to 18.8 percent in children ages six to eleven (2018, p. 641). It has been found that children in lower income families and minority neighborhoods are more likely to be obese due to less access to larger grocery stores and more fast food restaurants or convenience stores being close by (Lee, 2012). Larger grocery stores are more likely to have higher quality foods and produce and more healthy choices than smaller grocery stores or convenience stores (Lee, 2012). Convenience stores are more likely to carry unhealthy food choices as they more often than not stock foods that will last longer on the shelf and have a lower chance of perishing (Lee, 2012). Smaller grocery stores may carry produce and fresh food but they will likely carry less choices as compared to larger supermarkets (Lee, 2012). The prices in smaller grocery stores or convenience stores will likely be higher and the quality of the food may be poor (Lee, 2012).  The majority of Americans spend a large portion of their grocery budget on pre-made foods or take out and these foods have a higher calorie content than foods prepared at home. In addition, children who eat out often, consume 150 calories more per day than children who do not (Lee, 2012). One study showed that where there were more convenience stores within a specific zip code, the average BMI of the teenagers in that area was higher than the BMI of children who had more supermarkets within their zip code (Lee, 2012). Families without cars or access to transportation are more dependent on the local food retailers in their immediate area but when the local retailers are more likely to offer unhealthy choices, this becomes a problem (Lee, 2012). It has also been found that lower income families are more likely to drive to a discount grocery outlet or store instead of their local supermarket because the prices fit their budget better but they in turn get lower quality foods (Lee, 2012). They are more likely to choose generic foods and will buy non-perishable foods in bulk (Lee, 2012). As you can see, there are health disparities associated with low income families and minorities when it comes to nutritional choices and weight. Another study done shows the correlation between childhood obesity and the physical home environment in low income families. Children who have more screen time and who do not get enough sleep are more likely to become obese (Appelhans et.al., 2014) The study stresses the importance of implementing a bed time routine in children, reducing chaos in the home and removing televisions from children’s bedrooms to combat the increased rates of obesity in lower income families (Appelhans, 2014) The study showed a direct correlation with obesity, lack of sleep and increased screen time (Appelhans, 2014)

2. This tutorial reviews Milestone 2, your assessment and diagnosis paper. For Milestone 2, you will write an APA paper where you will complete your community assessment, and diagnose one community health nursing problem based on this data. You can find APA resources in your resource folder in your course.

3. Download the Milestone 2 guidelines from Doc Sharing, and follow the directions carefully. Use the headings outlined on these guidelines as first level headings in your paper. There is an APA template in resources that you can use to help with APA formatting.

4. Begin Milestone 2 with an introductory paragraph. Start your paper with an interesting sentence that grabs the attention of the reader. Provide an introduction to your paper, and be sure to include the purpose of your paper related to assessing and diagnosing a community health problem.

Follow this up in Section 2 with a second paragraph that describes your community in a little more detail. Include your community’s name and state. Discuss whether it is rural, suburban, or urban. Describe a few interesting facts about your area.

Next, in the demographic data section, discuss a range of demographic data for your community. Demographic data includes the general statistics that describe the community. This data is found in the U.S. Census Bureau reports (similar to the first part of your Week 2 discussion). Compare your demographic information to state or national statistics.

In the Epidemiological data section, include a range of information about disease rates, health behaviors, or public health problems in your area. This information can be found from your local health department records (on their website), the county health rankings website, or other records, such as those from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Do not use Wikipedia. Most .com websites are not considered scholarly resources. Use this data to paint a picture of your community. Compare your community data to state or national data. Be sure to include statistics that support the problem that you will be discussing later in the paper.

5. The windshield survey section includes a summary of the relevant parts of your windshield survey that was completed for the first Milestone. Be sure to include information about what you observed related to the problem you identify.

Now that you’ve collected the assessment data, you can diagnose the problem and discuss that in the next section. Be sure this is a nursing problem that you consider to be a priority concern. Provide the rationale for your choice, and relate your choice to one of the healthy people numbered objectives, not just a healthy people goal. Be sure that the data you collected and your windshield survey validates this problem. Also, discuss the findings of two scholarly journal articles related to the problem you chose. These articles may discuss factors that contribute to the problem you uncovered, but should not focus on interventions.

The summary section provides a paragraph about your paper and should include a restatement of what you discovered and a statement about the problem. When it comes to the patient Sue Li, most practitioners would automatically start with the assumption that she is from Asia (Purnell, 2012). The first question she will be asked is if she is a citizen of the country? If her response were “no” then her nationality would be requested, however, if it were yes the questioning will proceed (Galanti, 2014). The next question will be if she is fluent in English? If not if she would like any translator? If she is not being escorted by one. This will be followed her explanation of her condition in full detail. It is important not to judge the patient due to their difference in culture. The medical procedure that will be given will be explained in full detail to the patient and asked if she will be comfortable with the process. Abuse screen is a tool that nurses can use to evaluate if patient is victim of abuse the screening question will be performed to assess how recent how serious family abuse was.

In the case of abuse, she will be encouraged to express her problems. For a proper healthcare delivery in any setup, cultural competency of a nurse is an important factor (Jarvis, 2016). The nurse should clearly understand the cultural beliefs and the type of family setting that the patient was raised in for him to provide the best care to Ms. Li.  Most Asian American families have strong cultural beliefs and this can substantially influence the decision-making process by the patient. Other Asian American families have washed away their strong beliefs and hence their approach to healthcare might be more Americanized or westernized. Asian communities are family oriented and like coexisting peacefully as a group as opposed to emphasizing individuality. This coexistence is a protection against the hardships of life and a major source of identity (Jarvis, 2016). Inner strength and stamina and respect to the family are important values for the Asian children. By being sensitive to the other person’s mood and being polite in conversation, Asian families expect to be understood mutually and their non-verbal communication. Abuse Assessment Screen is a short domestic violence screening tool nurses can use in their healthcare settings. The tool is formatted such that no one feels singled out. Follow up question are asked if any of the questions are answered with a yes. These follow-up questions will be designed to assess how serious and how recent the family abuse was. Essentially, nurses have mandated reporters in their clinical setup.

If abuse is detected during the interview, the nurse should report it and document a detailed description of the nature of abuse as recounted by the patient. However, the nurse should take particular care to give the full the details of the abuser (McCulloch, 2014).  Ms. Li needs to have therapy services, support, and protection to help her recover and to keep her away from such an abusive environment.
