Neuropsychological Disorder

Biopsychological Analysis of a Neuropsychological Disorder
Neuropsychological Disorder

(Neuropsychological Disorder)

In your Final Project, you will synthesize an overview of the major theories relating to the pathology of a disorder as well as provide a detailed discussion of the etiology (causes) and clinical interventions, using research to support your analysis. Your topic will be the neuropsychological disorder that was selected and approved by the instructor in your Week One assignment, and for which you provided an outline in the Week Two assignment.

In keeping with the focus of this class, the emphasis of your paper will be on the neuroscience aspects of the disorder, to include:

  • Theories of etiology (causes)
  • Associated factors in development of the disorder (genetic, environmental, familial, lifestyle)
  • Pathology (abnormalities of physical structure and function, including genetic and biochemical aspects)
  • Treatment options (pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic, with rationales for use based on current understanding of the disorder)
  • Diagnostic and research technologies employed in clinical diagnosis, care, and basic science research

Your research will include a minimum of six to eight peer-reviewed sources, which provide evidence-based information regarding the biological and psychological features of the disorder and were published within the last five years. At least four of your references should be peer-reviewed publications of original research studies. To justify your assertions, provide in-text citations for all factual statements taken from your research, with corresponding references drawn from scholarly sources. All citations and sources are to be documented according to APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, and should support and enhance your analysis of the selected disorder. Sources may include review articles, original research articles, information from government agencies (e.g., National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control, Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Administration) or professional societies (e.g., professional society position papers or clinical practice guidelines).

Final Project- Components

Discussion1:Self-Determination

Discussion1:Self-Determination

(Discussion1:Self-Determination)

In the Christ & Diwan (2008) article, the authors list seven domains that social workers should address in order to fully assess an older client’s needs. Each domain is considered equally important. This comprehensive evaluation fits well with the social work perspective that it is important to not only address the internal concerns of clients but also their environment. Making decisions for older adults without their input occurs often. In society people sometimes treat their elders like children—making decisions for them based on what they think is best rather than from the client’s perspective. While at times this may be well intentioned, the potential for infantilism and, in turn, compromised self-determination, occurs.

For this Discussion, review the program case study for the Petrakis family. You will focus not on Helen, but on her mother-in-law, Magda. What decisions were made about Magda’s treatment without a formal assessment and/or her input? Consider how Christ & Diwan’s (2008) seven domains relate to Magda’s case. Complete an assessment for Magda and identify the choices that were made without her feedback.

· Post a summary of your assessment of Magda’s situation that addresses the seven domains.

· Fill in the gaps in content as necessary.

· Describe ways you would have included Magda in the original assessment and treatment plan.

· Include questions you would have asked Magda and her professional support system (doctors, nurses, etc.) to gain further insight into the situation.

Discussion 2: Elder Abuse(Discussion1:Self-Determination)

Each year on or around June 15, communities and municipalities around the world plan activities and programs to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day set aside to spread awareness of the abuse of the elderly (Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse & Neglect, 2013). The abuse of older adults is a growing concern and statistics suggest that the number of elders experiencing abuse is an alarmingly high number. Research suggests that close to half the people diagnosed with dementia experience some form of abuse (Cooper, C., Selwood, A., Blanchard, M., Walker, Z., Blizard, R., & Livingston, G., 2009; Wiglesworth, A., Mosqueda, L., Mulnard, R., Liao, S., Gibbs, L., & Fitzgerald, W., 2010, as cited on http://www.ncea.aoa.gov/Library/Data/index.aspx). Elder abuse takes on many forms and can include physical, emotional, psychological, and economic abuse. The legendary American actor, Mickey Rooney, spoke to the United States Senate, describing his own experiences of pain and neglect at the hands of his stepson, asking legislators to take seriously the abuse of the elderly.

For this Discussion, find a scholarly article that presents some of the most salient psychosocial issues related to elder abuse.

· Post a summary of the article you found.

· How does the article reinforce the importance of assessing potential abuse and neglect when working with the elderly?

· Describe prevention and/or intervention strategies on the micro, mezzo, and macro levels that can be used to address the issue of abuse and neglect of the elderly.

Diverse Population Health Analysis

Diverse Population Health Analysis

(Diverse Population Health Analysis)

Population health analysis involves studying the health outcomes and factors influencing the health of a diverse population. It encompasses various dimensions such as demographic factors (age, gender, ethnicity), socioeconomic status, access to healthcare, environmental factors, and lifestyle behaviors.

Analyzing diverse populations requires understanding disparities in health outcomes, which can be influenced by social determinants such as income inequality, education level, and cultural practices. For instance, certain ethnic groups might have higher rates of chronic diseases due to genetic predispositions or lifestyle factors like diet and exercise habits.

Healthcare interventions aimed at improving population health must consider these diverse factors to ensure effectiveness and equity. Strategies include targeted health education programs, improving access to healthcare services in underserved communities, and policy initiatives addressing social determinants of health.

Health Promotion Among Diverse Populations

Analyze the health status of a specific minority group. Select a  minority group that is represented in the United States (examples  include American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian American, Black or African  American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander).

In  an essay of 750-1,000 words, compare and contrast the health status of  the minority group you have selected to the national average. Consider  the cultural, socioeconomic, and sociopolitical barriers to health. How  do race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and education influence health  for the minority group you have selected? Address the following in your  essay:

  1. What is the current health status of this minority group?
  2. How is health promotion defined by this group?
  3. What health disparities exist for this group?
  4. Describe  at least one approach using the three levels of health promotion  prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary) that is likely to be the  most effective given the unique needs of the minority group you have  selected. Provide an explanation of why it might be the most effective  choice.

Cite a minimum of three references in the paper.

You  will find important health information regarding minority groups by  exploring the following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)  links:

  1. Minority Health: http://www.cdc.gov/minorityhealth/index.html
  2. Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH): http://www.cdc.gov/chronicdisease/resources/publications/aag/reach.htm

Navigating Workplace Diversity

Navigating Workplace Diversity

(Navigating Workplace Diversity)

“Navigating Workplace Diversity: Embracing Challenges for Growth” explores the evolving landscape of diversity within organizational settings. It acknowledges that diversity encompasses more than just visible differences like race and gender, but also includes diverse perspectives, experiences, and ways of thinking. The article emphasizes that embracing diversity is not merely a legal or ethical requirement but a strategic advantage. Organizations that actively cultivate diverse teams benefit from increased innovation, better decision-making, and a deeper understanding of diverse customer bases.

However, the article also highlights the challenges of navigating workplace diversity, such as overcoming biases, fostering inclusive environments, and managing conflicts that may arise from cultural or communication differences. It encourages organizations to implement comprehensive diversity training programs, establish clear policies against discrimination, and promote leadership roles for individuals from underrepresented groups.

Ultimately, “Navigating Workplace Diversity: Embracing Challenges for Growth” advocates for a proactive approach to diversity management that goes beyond tokenism or quotas. It calls for genuine commitment from leadership to create a culture where all employees feel valued and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives toward achieving organizational success.

Challenges In Identifying Mental Disorders

Assignment 3: Challenges in Identifying Mental Disorders

(Challenges In Identifying Mental Disorders)

Most mental disorders lie on a continuum with “normal” behavior at one end. For example, nearly everyone has a fear of something, but it does not rise to the level of a phobia. A behavior may seem abnormal in one context but completely normal in another context. These two aspects show why it can be challenging to properly identify mental disorders.

Using your textbook and the Argosy University online library resources, research the principles and methods of identifying mental disorders. Note particularly the diversity of views and the challenges of identification. Based on your research, write a reflective essay. Use the following question to direct your thoughts and organize your essay:

  • Why is determining abnormal behavior or a mental disorder so difficult?

To develop your essay, keep in mind issues such as the role of social norms in defining the abnormal, the multiplicity of indicators of what is abnormal, the stigma suffered by those identified as abnormal, and finally the need for objectivity in dealing with the concept.

Write a 2–3-page essay in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

Using Solution-Focused Therapy

Application: Using Solution-Focused Therapy

Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a goal-oriented therapeutic approach that emphasizes practical solutions to current problems rather than delving into past issues. It focuses on identifying clients’ strengths and resources to achieve rapid and lasting change. In SFT, therapists collaborate with clients to set clear, specific, and achievable goals. The therapy session typically begins by exploring the client’s desired future and what life would be like if the problem were solved. Therapists use scaling questions to assess the client’s motivation and progress towards their goals. Through respectful curiosity and active listening, therapists help clients recognize exceptions to their problems—times when the issue was less severe or absent. These exceptions serve as blueprints for generating solutions. SFT encourages clients to experiment with small changes between sessions, promoting a sense of agency and empowerment. By amplifying successes and building on strengths, SFT fosters a positive cycle of change. Its brief, solution-focused nature makes it particularly effective for clients seeking concrete strategies and rapid progress in addressing specific challenges.

When social workers use solution-focused therapy to work with a client, they employ a variety of principles and techniques. For example, social workers may de-emphasize client problems, look for previous solutions to client problems, and use the compliments technique to work with clients. Using these techniques and others in solution-focused therapy is important to the success of the intervention.

For this Application Assignment, review the case studies provided in this week’s Learning Resources, and select one. Think about intervention and assessment strategies that you might use based on the case study. Consider how you might use compliments and at least one other technique associated with solution-focused therapy to work with the clients in case study you selected.

The assignment (1–2 pages):

·  Briefly describe the case study you selected.

·  Explain two strategies you might use to develop an intervention to address issues in the case study.

·  Explain how you might use the compliments technique and at least one other technique to move the client toward solutions.

·  Explain why the compliments technique and the other technique you selected could be effective solution-focused therapy techniques to use with clients in the case study.

·  Share an insight or conclusion you drew about the nature of solution-focused therapy in social work. Support your response with references to the Learning Resources.

Note: Support your Application Assignment with specific references to the Learning Resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list only for those resources not included in the Learning Resources for this course.

Week10 Discussion2 Response

Week10 Discussion2 Response

(Week10 Discussion2 Response)

Please no plagiarism and make sure you are able to access all resource on your own before you bid. One of the references must come from Broderick and Blewitt (2015). I need this completed by 02/04/18 at 3pm. Respond to at least two of my colleagues using one or more of the following approaches:

· Offer and support an alternative perspective using readings from the classroom or from your own research in the Walden Library.

· Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research.

· Expand on your colleague’s posting by providing additional insights or contrasting perspectives based on readings and evidence.

1. (B. Smi)

After completing the Five Factor Personality Test, my results were as follows: Factor I: Extraversion (Surgency), Factor II: Agreeableness (Friendliness), Factor III: Conscientiousness (Dependability), Factor IV: Neuroticism, and Factor V: Openness (Culture/Intellect).

Factor I

Buchanan (n.d.) declares that Surgency is a descriptor for behavior in social settings. Those who score high in this trait are very outgoing while those who score low are more reserved, introverts.. My score was ranked at about average. I can’t say that this score was accurate or inaccurate because I believe I can be an even split. If I am unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the setting, I can be reserved and observant.

Factor II

Friendliness is described by Buchanan (n.d.) as a trait that displays how an individual treats others. I believe this to be true as I firmly believe in treating others with respect at all times. I am very cognizant about pleasantries and politeness: please and thank yous, eye contact, and respectful tones. The associated characteristics for this trait are identified as trusting, friendly, and cooperative. I would say I am each of these. Over time, I’ve that it takes much more time and energy to be mean, angry, or spiteful. There is also no benefit to that behavior when others are going on about their lives. In addition to this, I know how it feels to be treated poorly and I’d rather not spread that around. I would much rather throw glitter than coal. My score, 29, is ranked as relatively high.

Factor III(Week10 Discussion2 Response)

Conscientiousness is describes a person’s ability to be organized and persistent in accomplishing their set goals. Also a trait that manifested over time. I’ve always enjoyed learning but found high school a bit too easy. Therefore, college was a bit of a shock because I had to learn to study for the first time ever. Now, I am all about planning, time frames, and setting goals that are attainable and realistic. I believe I favor mother in this trait as she has always preached to that I be a woman of my word. It was always her expectation that I did what I said I would do and if I could not, it needed to be discussed. My score in this factor, 44, is categorized as relatively high, depicting me as well organized and dutiful.

Factor IV

Neuroticism concerns a person’s frequency in experiencing negative emotions. Like most people, I have a few negative thought about myself when I feel disappointed or that I could have done better at something. However, this is not a frequent occurrence. I agree with my score of 13, which is marked as relatively low.  In the past I had a lot of negative self talk. I remember reading once that they way parent’s speak to their children is the reoccurring voice in their head. I firmly believe this. I struggled with my body image a lot in school and college even wearing size three jeans because I was often told I needed to lost weight and eat less. An increase in self-love and taking over my views of my body decreased past emotional distress. I would say I am more relaxed and less emotional.

Factor V

The trait of openness, within the FFPT,  depicts a person’s ability to be open-minded and interested in culture. My high score of 31 indicates my likeliness to be creative and imaginative. Buchanan (n.d.) insists similar individuals also seek out cultural and educational experiences. This score is spot on as I love art !!! I literally just received two paintings for my apartment from a friend of mine. I believe in art and its ability to help those who are different and express themselves differently. In addition to this, I sometimes assist a great friend of mine in creative direction for his photo shoots. I also co-founded a blog in which I discussed topics related to non-millennial millennial. Lol

Two Experiences

An experience that impacted my development until adulthood was the way I viewed myself. I was very active in high school: cheerleading, dance team, and working part-time. I wore single digits in jeans but I was never small enough for my mother. I carried that insecurity about my body with me for most of my life. It took some therapy and a lot of “undoing” for me to unlearn the negative self-talk. I’d come so self-conscious I’d talk about my weight before anyone else could to beat them to the punch. However, this undoing also helped me deal with negativity. I was bullied in high school for trivial things. I knew they weren’t true but the pain was very real. As a young adult I’ve decided not to take on other people’s stuff. Through life experiences and educational materials, I’ve learned that sometimes project onto others or reflect their unhappiness by lashing out at others. I have made my personal views of self a priority.

Another experience that has impacted my development was the notion to preserve. My dad is an Army vet and always believed “if there’s a will, there’s a way.” He didn’t believe there was just one route to anything. Implementing that style of thought has helped me through a number of things. There isn’t just one way to be educated, happy, or loved. An example of this could be taken from my workplace values. I work for the Department of Human Resources, assisting individuals in finding jobs and furthering their education. If I cannot find the necessary information, I’m willing to search all systems, send emails, and annoy my teammates to help that person out. I do not believe in trying something once and becoming defeated. I’ve carried this attitude with me in all areas of life.

Summary(Week10 Discussion2 Response)

I believe that the FFPT results were spot on in the assessment of my traits and behaviors. While my Surgency can vary, it is accurate in the sense that I can be both outgoing and reserved. I believe that my childhood traits and lessons have followed me into adulthood. However, I also believe traits can change and evolve as the person does. Finally, I believe a large part of my ability to change is influenced by Factor V: which is my ability to be open, imaginative, and creative.

2. (A. Wit)

Personality traits are relatively stable over the lifespan, but they are also influenced by life stage development and life events. Thirty-five years ago, mental health researchers found they could narrow down measurable personality traits into five categories: extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015).  These personality traits are often referred to as the “Five Factor Model” or “the Big 5”.  The Five Factor Personality Test (FFTP) is an online modification of the International Personality Item Pool (INIP).  Both tests are used to rank individuals within the five personality trait categories (Buchanan, n.d.).  Such tests can be used to analyze stability and change in personality traits over time (Specht, Egloff, & Schmukle, 2011).

My FFTP scores

Factor I- Extroversion- 27- about average

Factor II- Agreeableness- 26- about average

Factor III- Conscientiousness -39- relatively high

Factor IV- Neuroticism- 18- relatively low

Factor V- Openness- 23- relatively low

My scores on the FFTP were predictable in some categories and surprising in others.  The most surprising score was Factor I-extroversion.  I ranked about average.  This is surprising to me because I would describe myself as an introvert.  Although I am adept in social situations, I highly value time alone.  I prefer listening and observing unless I feel confident in making a point.  In factors II-V including agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness, my scores were predictable.  My highly conscientious traits include a preference for planning over spontaneity and co-dependent behaviors such as being overly responsible for myself and others.

Influences on personality development in childhood and adulthood

Despite the stability of personality traits over time, major life events can influence a person’s rank in any of the five factors (Specht, Egloff, & Schmukle, 2011).  Major life events may include normative milestones or unpredictable situations.  One normative life event that has influenced my personality was becoming a parent.  I would expect that my score in the conscientious category would be lower before parenthood.  I had three children in the span of five years.  The responsibility of caring and nurturing three young children trumped a spontaneous lifestyle.  Non-normative events that have influenced my personality were the divorce of my parents in middle adulthood and later my own divorce.  In the period immediately following both divorces, I suspect that my neuroticism would have ranked much higher than it does today, and higher than it was as an adolescent.  My current low-level of neuroticism is a poignant indicator of the stability of personality traits from childhood through adulthood, even if they can vary in response to life events.

Manifestation of personality traits(Week10 Discussion2 Response)

My scores in the FFTP are reflective of who I am today, in this moment.  For example, I scored relatively low in openness.  High scorers in openness are creative, imaginative, and seek out cultural experiences, whereas low scorers are down-to-earth and practical (Buchanan, n.d.).  I tend to gather details and analyze.  I like to do research and math!  Although I am very open and willing to explore spiritually, I value tangible facts.  Another example of the manifestation of traits is my cooperative approach to working with others and my above average agreeableness score.  I live in a small rural community.  I was raised to put trust in my neighbors and expect that most people were allies rather than opponents.

Summary

Counselors should adopt a multidimensional approach to lifespan development.  Although personality traits are relatively stable over the lifespan, they can be influenced by normative and non-normative events.  Using the FFTP assessment can help clients develop an awareness of the quality of life (Buchanan, n.d.).  This assignment has helped me to identify levels and manifestations of my extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness.

Addressing Clinical Challenges

Addressing Clinical Challenges

(Addressing Clinical Challenges)

Respond to each of the 6 statement

Question description

Please respond with a 150 words per statement. APA format.

Question1: During your practicum, determine what clinical problem or issue the organization is facing. Discuss two implications for nursing.

Statement1:Working in the student health center at a SUNY college, a significant issue we are faced with is the increased number of students who are testing positive for sexually transmitted infections (STI). Despite numerous prevention and treatment efforts, the transmission of STI’s on college campuses continue to be a significant health concern (Williams et al., 2008). Here at the center we offer free condoms and partner up with outside organizations who will test our students for HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis free of charge. We also treat our students with the appropriate medication regimen if they are tested positive for an STI and will treat their partners as well if they are a student on campus.

Nursing implications include teaching and educating students and encouraging screenings for sexually transmitted infections. Educating our students is a critical component of STI prevention and management. We conduct many different educational programs on topics pertaining to STI’s, sexual health, and safe sex practices. Nurses can offer guidance to individuals about communicating an STI diagnosis to their current or previous partners and can help facilitate treatment (Maria et al., 2017). Encouraging screening for STI’s is also an important nursing implication. We recommend our students to be tested every six month to one year if tested negative in the past. For students who have tested positive, we recommend testing in three months. Students have expressed great gratitude to us for the services that we provide to them.

STATEMENT 2: I work in a community clinic serving the needs of the underserved in Pinal County Arizona. The clinic provides services in family care, pediatrics, dental, and women’s health. I take a special interest in women’s health as I am the Registered Nurse Team Leader for the OBGYN department. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 2018 cervical cancer impacts women globally and it is one of the cancers that is the most preventable. I recognized a calling in women’s health because all too often I see how this topic is overlooked and realize that more attention needs to be placed on preventative care of the complex health issues that affect women. Pap smears are a very easy and important tool used in the early detection of cervical cancer. While the Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA), 2018 underscores that 100 percent of women should complete routine cervical cancer screening they suggest, “an organization can set an appropriate and realistic goal based on the review of comparable data after consideration of the payer mix of the patient population served” (p.10). As an organization we set the benchmark at 75 percent of females in the community ages 21-65 years have routine cervical cancer screening, however the organizations 2017 dashboards indicate they are only at 50 percent. This has many implications to the nursing practice as nurses play a key role in prevention and detection. It is within a nurse’s scope of practice to advocate for screening, provide training and education, and with many nurses in advanced practice roles such as nurse practitioner, they are also performing the screening tests. Greensdale, Fitzgerald, Doyle Barry, and Power-Kean, 2013 stress that women need to be empowered through proper education, take advantage of new technology and electronic medical record (EMR) systems to track and send reminders to patient, and evaluating health behaviors for avoiding routine pap exams. There is absolutely no reason why these screening numbers cannot be turned around and have a positive impact on patient outcomes when we have the resources right at our fingertips.

STATEMENT 3: Working at a local hospital in the orthopedics department, there is currently an issue regarding readmission to the hospital due to secondary infection in post-operative patients who did not follow their discharge instructions for wound care. Being in a low income region with high rates of diabetes, there are increased risks for health complications after surgery, including improper wound healing (Providence Health Network, 2016). Although there are instructions given to the patients prior to discharge regarding their medications and the physical therapy they need to attend or wound care they need to perform, there is a lack of compliance to the care plan. Many of the patients stated upon readmission that their initial surgery or hospitalization was covered from their insurance but the necessary outpatient therapies or wound care appointments were going to be out of pocket costs, which they could not afford. Because they opted to not follow-up or go to their appointments, they had decreased wound healing and many of them developed staph infections leading to them being readmitted (Providence Health Network, 2016). In order to address this problem, there are several measures being taken both prior to discharge and afterwards in order to reduce these complications and promote proper wound healing and health.

One primary method of reducing these readmission rates is to provide supplies and education for the patients to perform their dressing changes or necessary wound care after being discharged. Public community resources and resources provided from the hospital as donations are given in order to reduce the financial burden on those who cannot afford the follow-up visits to specialty wound care clinics (Providence Health Network, 2016). Prior to discharge the nurses also provide education and demonstration to the patient and their family in order to confirm that they are capable of performing the care needing. In addition, the case managers have created a team of wound care nurses who follow-up with these patients via phone or video chat to ensure they are performing the care.

Another way they are working to correct this issue is to provide diabetes education to patients that already have diabetes or who are at risk for developing diabetes. Because many patients come in and are unaware that they are at risk or have diabetes, they also present a higher risk for complications. Teaching them about proper nutrition and glucose monitoring, as well as checking their feet are all ways the nurses are able to increase knowledge of diabetes. By making them aware of the risk for impaired tissued integrity or decreased wound healing, it will help encourage them to be more diligent in their post-operative care upon discharge (providence Health Network, 2016). Making sure they are educated regarding the effects of diabetes is a priority for all patients, but increasingly so in the patients with a higher risk for complication because of the comorbidity.

QUESTION 2 What is the main issue for your organization in addressing a solution to evidence-based nursing practice? Discuss what might be the first step in addressing and resolving this issue.

STATEMENT 3(Addressing Clinical Challenges)

As the nursing profession continues to evolve, the educational focus is also changing. One of the most significant emerging needs in healthcare today is evidence-based practice. Key elements in the successful implementation of evidence-based practice in nursing include: (University of Texas Arlington, 2012)

  • Reviewing research and studies that examine the best practices in clinical nursing (University of Texas Arlington, 2012).
  • Interactive decision-making regarding care and treatment planning which integrates care team members, as well as the opinion of the patient and his or her family (University of Texas Arlington, 2012).
  • Ongoing professional development education of nurses, including pursuit of advanced degree programs when available (University of Texas Arlington, 2012).
  • Addressing clinical issues and critically examining possible practice changes (University of Texas Arlington, 2012).
  • Strong emphasis on problem-solving skills, clinical judgment and the use of sound evidence to support clinical decisions based on research, experience and the environment (University of Texas Arlington, 2012).

There are many ways to help address, and resolve the need for more EBP in health care settings. It starts, with support from management, and across the board education.

  • Confirm management support (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).S
  • Expressed support for the initiative (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
  • Additional months for Implementation Team to work (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
  • Training resources and release time for unit staff involved in prevention (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
  • Resources for equipment and supplies (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
  • Policies and procedures in place (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
  • Develop a process for monitoring implementation closely and making midcourse corrections as needed (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018).
  • Carry out your strategies so that you successfully implement the new practices (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018)

RESPOND TO THE STATEMENT WITH 175 WORDS APA FORMAT SOURCE IF NECESSARY.

STATEMENT 5

Evidence based practice (EBP) involves clinical decision making based on current best research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences (Stokke et al., 2014). Research has revealed that patient outcomes significantly improve when nurses utilize evidence based practice. EBP has been shown to increase patient safety, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce healthcare costs. One of the main issues we are faced with in addressing a solution to evidence-based nursing practice in my organization is lack of support and resistance from senior staff to use and conduct research. Without support and engagement from senior staff, it is nearly impossible for our facility to sustain a culture of evidence based practice. Due to this issue, we are also currently one of the few SUNY colleges who have not yet implemented electronic health records into our facility.

The first step to addressing and resolving this issue is to stress the importance of implementing evidence based practice into our facility. Communication and collaboration is imperative in resolving this issue. Many of the senior staff are afraid of technology and simply refuse to embrace it. A few of them lack support because they feel they lack knowledge and competency. Conducting a meeting with all staff involved and explaining the significant benefits that ebp can bring to our facility is imperative. Explaining how evidence based practice is used in similar facility settings would also be beneficial. The hardest step in this process is to get everyone in agreeance that implementing evidence based practice in our facility is a necessity.

RESPOND TO THE STATEMENT WITH 175 WORDS APA FORMAT SOURCE IF NECESSARY.

STATEMENT 6(Addressing Clinical Challenges)

Evidence-based nursing practice is an approach used in nursing practice that allows nurses to use up to date research that has been proven and tested by professionals in improving patient outcomes. This practice involves the ability to access, summarize, and apply information from literature to everyday clinical problems (University Libraries, 2018). According to the Journal of Clinical Nursing, evidence-based nursing is an ongoing process by which evidence, nursing theory and the practitioners’ clinical expertise are critically evaluated and considered, in conjunction with patient involvement, to provide delivery of optimum nursing care for the individual (as cited in, University of Libraries, 2018).

One of the main issues in addressing a solution to evidence-based nursing practice in our organization is the everchanging policies and procedures. The constant changing of policies and procedures makes it almost impossible to keep up with. When we do have time to research a certain topic we are not sure if we are looking at the correct one. Sometimes the policies have not been updated in our system and we can only go by what was said during our quarterly meetings. A way to address this issue is to promptly update our policies before they are introduced in our meetings. This way we have a formal written policy we have access to for reinforcement and guidance. Another step in resolving this issue is to keep staff updated and reminded of these changes via emails, posters, meetings, and end of shift reports.
