The Journey to Sustainability

Imagine a future (probably a long time from now) in which human beings have achieved environmental sustainability on a global scale. That means that we as a species have figured out how to maintain a lifestyle that can go on indefinitely. Humans will exist in harmony with their environment, not needing more resources than can naturally be replenished. What would such a world be like? How might we get there from here?

In this final assignment, you will play the part of science-fiction writer, imagining and describing what a sustainable Earth, inhabited by humans, might look like in the distant future. You will need to provide examples throughout to support your descriptions. You should include all the terms that you have researched during Weeks 1 through 4 of this class, underlining each term as you include it. Be sure to expand on your terms and include other concepts that you learned in the course. Provide as detailed a picture as possible of how that future world might function on a day-to-day basis. In your paper, use grammar and spell-checking programs to insure clarity. Proofread carefully prior to submitting your work. Finally, you will submit the document to Waypoint.

Your paper will consist of seven paragraphs using the format below to address the elements with the assumption that environmental sustainability has been achieved:

·  Paragraph 1:

o  Describe how the human relationship to nature will be different from what it is at present.

o  Examine how humans will cope differently with the ways that natural phenomena like hurricanes affect lives.

·  Paragraph 2:

o  Describe what Earth’s biodiversity and ecosystems will look like in a sustainable future.

o  Explain what humans have done differently to enable biodiversity and ecosystems to function sustainably.

·  Paragraph 3:

o  Examine how agricultural production will be different in a sustainable future.

·  Paragraph 4:

o  Differentiate between how humans will manage water resources (fresh water and ocean) in the sustainable future compared to how it is done now.

·  Paragraph 5

o  Examine how humans will meet their energy needs in the future in a way that will enable maintenance of a sustainable, habitable atmosphere and climate.

o  Indicate the changes that humans have made that are enabling them to maintain a healthy atmosphere and climate for all.

·  Paragraph 6:

o  Describe how waste management will be different in a sustainable future.

o  Indicate the changes have been made to how humans think about and treat what is currently called “waste.”

·  Paragraph 7:

o  Summarize some of the major social, economic, political, and ecological choices and tradeoffs that will need to be overcome for this sustainable future to arrive. What are some of the major issues and challenges humans will have to face in order to achieve sustainability on a global scale?

The Journey to Sustainability final paper

·  Must be seven paragraphs in length (350 to 700 words) (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA Style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s APA Style (Links to an external site.)

·  Must incorporate all four of your previously selected terms.

·  Must utilize academic voice. See the Academic Voice (Links to an external site.) resource for additional guidance.

Advanced Toxicology

Introduce yourself to your classmates with your name, location (Memphis Tennessee current employment Laboratory Corporation of American (Labcorp), and future goals. In the event of a natural disaster such as Hurricane Matthew in 2016 or Hurricane Katrina in 2005( my home state is Louisiana I was affected by Katrina) identify and explain which two specialized fields of toxicology would be most involved in assessing the health risks and environmental issues involved in the aftermath of the storms. What do you think their main role would be?

ALSO REPLY TO ANOTHER STUDENTS COMMENT BELOW

Adam:

Hello, my name is Adam, I currently live in a small town called Visalia California where I am originally from but, lived in San Jose for 7 years. I currently work at UPS where I transitioned my poisition to health and safety supervisor however, recently I am also learning about processing hazardous material and recovery as well. My future goals is to gain experience in the feild of health, safety, and hazardous material and advance my career to the best of my ability. I also strive to be the best health and safety professional I can be keeping employees, the environment, and infrastructure as safe as possible.

In the case of a natural disaster such as a hurricane, there are many components of toxicology that would need to be considered to assist in the recovery process. This would include what and who were exposured to toxic substances and in what quantity? What are the impacts that this toxic material can have on factors like human health, air, water, soil, and infrastructure? What are the adverse effects of this toxic substance? Can the damage done be mitigated or reversed? These are some of the questions that would be asked in most cases related to exposure to a toxic material.

A descriptive toxicologist would be involved in assessing these factors in relation to human health. This would be the people who focus mostly on toxicity testing of chemicals and identifying the hazards associated with the harmful effects on human organs. This would also include understanding of how toxic material in absorbed through the human body and figuring how to remove it. The other toxicologist would be a applied toxicologist who study how chemicals interact with real world situations. They would help determine exposure limits associated with the level of toxic material present in non-laboratory environments. This would also include understanding the pathways of how a toxic material can be absorbed into the human body or environment. I believe these two studies would be the best in understanding toxicology impacts in the case of a hurricane.

Discussion: Individual Responsibility Versus Victim Blaming in Health Promotion

Discussion Tips for Students

Part of what makes a discussion a discussion and not a lecture is the back-and-forth, in-depth, animated engagement of  at least two  people. If you start a topic and your colleagues are not engaging in it, consider what you can do to get the conversation going. Include something that would elicit further thoughts and different opinions from colleagues. Remember that discussion supports a discovery learning experience that facilitates a deeper understanding of content from multiple viewpoints. To ensure that your contributions to the Discussion posts are timely, relevant, insightful, and engaging, keep the following in mind as you post:

•   Engage in the Discussion as early as possible and continue to post throughout the module.

Health promotion and disease prevention are based on the idea that optimal health should be promoted and disease should be prevented wherever possible. The focus on preventing disease often leads to tension between encouraging individuals to take responsibility for their own health, on the one hand, and making them feel as if they are somehow responsible for causing their health condition, on the other hand.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the section “Assumptions of Health Promotion” (pp. 9-10) presented in your course text, and the methods utilized in planning a health promotion program. Consider the assumptions of health promotion on which these methods are based, paying particular attention to assumption #8.

With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 5

Start the Discussion by describing the challenges that program planners face when trying to promote the idea of personal responsibility with regard to health behavior while also trying to avoid placing the blame on individuals for their health status. Is it possible to do both? Explain why or why not.

This Discussion will be available from Day 1 through Day 7 of this module. While you are required to submit your initial post by Day 5, you are encouraged to post early. Once you have submitted your initial post, start responding to your colleagues by no later thanDay 5. Continue to interact frequently with your colleagues through Day 7,supporting your responses with credible sources.

1st COLLEGUE/ BRIAN DISCUSSION POST:

Hello class!

Program planners find difficulties in promoting the idea of personal responsibility with regard to health behavior because planning involves finding the solutions to the problems that exist in the environment and how to approach the people affected so that they can learn more. The learning or education part is a challenge since the people affected may not be in the best position to make sound health related choices due to their state of leaving. A perfect example is how to eradicate the issues of malnutrition in the community. In such conditions, the health program planners may find challenges to educate the poor communities on how to have a balanced diet while they are not in a position to afford a single meal. Besides that, providing education on how to eradicate some diseases in the community is a challenge to the program planners because some of the diseases and disabilities are because of genetic and environmental factors and may not make any sense to the community or target population

The other challenge experienced by the program planners is the constant changes in the environment settings, which may block some of the programs. For examples, when the resources allocated to a certain program are not released on the arranged time, the education program may not be conducted at the required time since the resources required may be inadequate. Moreover, changing the perception and desires of the people rooted in their culture is a challenge since the people may not find a way of substituting the education provided on health and their culture or lifestyle (Resnik, 2007). Moreover, the program planners address problems that are beyond the ability of the people to deal with. Controlling and managing environmental health cannot be achieved by the individuals but by the government.

It is possible to promote the idea of personal responsibility with regard to health behavior while trying to avoid placing blame on individuals for their health status because the program planners can promote the health status by providing education on sanitation (Society for Public Health Education, 2017). The health planners can also focus on disease surveillance, controlling of pollution, occupation health, and urban planning so that the risks exposed to the environment can be minimized.

Resource Conservation And Recovery Act (RCRA)

This unit has presented the regulatory environment related to industrial and hazardous wastes. The required unit resources and unit lesson presented aspects of the historical and current regulatory environment, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) requirements, and the impact of nonuniform international environmental laws.

For this assignment, review the case study that was in the required unit resources “Hidden Externalities: The Globalization of Hazardous Waste” concerning the Colbert brothers’ hazardous waste business.

In your case study, discuss the Colbert brothers’ business and how they were able to conduct this business operation.

In addition, address the following items:

· Assess the historical and current regulatory environment on this case.

· Summarize RCRA requirements regarding this hazardous waste case.

· Appraise the impact of nonuniform international environmental laws concerning this case.

· Assess the ethical standards for the Colbert brothers and if their punishment fit their crime.

· State your opinion on how the case was handled.

You do not need to write your case study in the order of the above items. Weave the items into your paper to create a flowing, readable document with smooth transitions.

Your case study must be at least three pages in length with a title page and reference page (title and reference pages do not count toward the minimum page requirement).

Besides using the source from this article in your case study, locate an additional peer-reviewed article from the CSU Online Library that centers on RCRA requirements and the current regulatory environment regarding hazardous waste. The article must be no more than five years old. Also, it may be helpful to utilize the Environmental Protection Agency websites listed under References.

Because this assignment requires you to reference peer-reviewed articles, you may find it helpful to review the library’s  tutorial on How to Find Peer-Reviewed Resources . ( Transcript for How to Find Peer-Reviewed Resources video )

Adhere to APA Style guidelines when constructing this assignment, including in-text citations and references for all sources that are used. Please note that no abstract is needed.
