Final Research Paper

In the Final Research Paper, you will examine your own culture from an etic (outsider’s) perspective and another culture from an emic (insider’s) perspective to demonstrate your understanding of cultural relativism and examine misconceptions and ethnocentric beliefs concerning each of these cultures. In doing so, you will demonstrate a culturally relativistic perspective, in order to understand why different groups of people do what they do, without expressing a positive or negative opinion of their cultural practices. Keep the distinction between cultural relativism and moral relativism in mind as you write your final paper. Even if you do not personally agree with a cultural practice, demonstrate your understanding of the practice in its cultural context. Avoid opinionated or judgmental language in your paper.

Your Final Research Paper will consist of two main parts, framed by an Introduction and a Conclusion. See the flow chart for a quick overview of the assignment.

Introduction

Begin with an introductory paragraph that has a thesis statement at the end. The introduction should set up your topic, giving a preview and summary of the analysis you will present in the body of the paper. The thesis statement is the last sentence or two of the introduction and states what the main point structuring your paper will be.

Here is an example of an Introduction.

Part I

Using the Miner (1956) article and the feedback you received from your instructor on your “Summarize Your Sources for the Final Research Paper” assignment in Week Three as a guide, describe one aspect of your own culture from an etic perspective. See the appropriate sections in the textbook, based on your chosen topic from Week Three, for information on how to approach your paper from an anthropological perspective. You can describe American culture in general, as Miner does, or you can describe an American subculture, such as a specific geographical group (e.g., New Yorkers), a particular ethnicity (e.g., African Americans), or an age-related category of Americans (e.g., millennials).

Use reputable statistics and/or scholarly research to support any factual statements. Do not rely solely on personal experience or opinion. Here is an example of how to properly support your statements.

Potential sources you can use to support your analysis are listed below. You can also conduct your own research to find other sources.

Important: see additional instructions in Part I under Final Paper Requirements.

Here is an example of Part I.

Part II

Refer to the article you chose for Part II of the “Summarize Your Sources for the Final Research Paper” assignment in Week Three and describe an aspect of another culture from an emic (insider’s) perspective. You do not have to do research beyond reading your chosen article; however, if you do choose to conduct additional research make sure to use reputable statistics and/or scholarly sources to support any factual statements. Do not rely solely upon personal experience or opinion.

Important: see additional instructions in Part II under Final Paper Requirements.

Here is an example of Part II.

Conclusion

End with a concluding paragraph that reinforces your thesis. Summarize and tie together your main points for the reader. Provide a brief self-reflexive analysis of what you learned while writing this paper.

Important: see additional instructions in Conclusion under Final Paper Requirements.

Here is an example of a Conclusion.

Cultural relativism

Cultural relativismis the idea that the beliefs and practices of a culture should be understood within the context of that particular culture’s background, history, and current events surrounding it. We should not ethnocentrically impose our own beliefs and opinions, which are products of our own enculturation

Cultural relativism is not the same as moral relativism, however. As Crapo (2013) notes:

“We need not, for instance, come to value infanticide in order to understand the roles it may play in peoples’ lives in a society where it is customary. What cultural relativism requires of us is simply that we do not confuse our own feelings about such a custom with understanding it. To do the latter, we must investigate the meanings the custom has for those who practice it and the functions it may fulfill in their society.”(section 1.4, “Cultural Differences: Cultural Relativism,” para. 3)

Sociology Essay , I Have Instructions In Black And Also A HELP ESSAY In Red That The Professor Gaved Us. Please Read Them Well Before U Start

So often, influential people make claims about the way things are (or should be) based on their own ideological beliefs and not on actual facts.  This essay is all about finding and interpreting real data to “fact-check” such statements and learn the real truth, not what others want you to believe.  For this exercise, you’ll compare talk and reality around some aspect of work and money in America; then once you know the truth, you’ll apply some sociological theory to go beyond the headlines and really explain what’s happening.

  1. A quote describing the American economy, American workers, or work in America. Your quote must fit all of these guidelines:
    • Printed by a legitimate news source (major newspaper, magazine, news website) within the last 5 years or so.
    • Spoken by a prominent “opinion leader” (someone many people listen to, like a politician, reporter, religious leader, famous businessperson, etc.).
    • Makes a claim about something real that you can fact-check with a statistic (NOT a feeling, dream, thoughts on God or human nature, etc…)
  1. A statistic printed by a legitimate source (news, academic articles/books, government report, etc.) or pulled from a database (like the World Bank, US Bureau of Labor Statistics, US Census, etc.) that clearly relates to your quote.
  2. Explain whether your statistic either proves or disproves what the quote said. (If neither, you need a new statistic, or quote, or both!)
  3. Now that you know the truth, pick at least one major sociological theory (functionalism, conflict theory, interactionism) and use it to explain the meaning of your statistic.
  4. An in-text citation following your quote and your statistic, and a separate “references page” detailing the sources of your quote and statistic.
    • Use any format you’re comfortable with—APA, MLA, ASA…just be consistent.
    • Your references page does not count toward the 2-3 page recommended length for this essay.

Citations and references are important.  Small errors in format make you look unprofessional, and will cost you a few points.  Major errors may make it impossible for me to track down your sources myself, so your quote and/or statistic may not count (how do I know you didn’t make them up?), which will cost you way more points.  And complete lack of quotation marks, citations, and references means you’re plagiarizing, which will get you a zero for the assignment.

Try to give equal attention to explaining the quote, comparing it to the statistic, and your sociological analysis at the end.  Each task should get about the same amount of space in this essay.

The Focus Of This Paper Is To Explore How Residential Patterns Affect Intergroup Relations. You Will

The focus of this paper is to explore how residential patterns affect intergroup relations. You will use research approaches such as observation and secondary data analysis to further understand your community. You will need to choose whether you will research your city, county, or state. Be sure to choose a large enough geographic area to perform meaningful analysis. For example, if you live in Hawaii, you may want to research your state. If you live in a small town, you may want to research your county. If you live in Atlanta or another big city, researching at the city level should be fine.

Step 1: Using Secondary Data
Use the data gathered on your chosen locality in the Week Three assignment, “Demographic Report,” . If more data is needed, use demographic data from the latest census (available online using the US Census American FactFinder) and identify the various social and economic characteristics (i.e., education, population, housing, race, class, etc.) of this locale. You can also check government websites for your state, county or city for data. Present your findings in two to three pages of the paper.

Step 2: Using an Observational Study
Taking the information you have gathered in Step 1 regarding social and economic characteristics, and take 30 to 60 minutes observing your community or use a newspaper if you’re unable to physically go to your community. Take notes of what you observe. Compare this data to what was found in the census data and make note if there are differences. Present your findings in one to two pages of the paper.

Step 3: Analysis and Reporting of Research
Analyze your data and present your responses in two to three pages in the paper:

  • Describe how segregated the neighborhoods are in your locality. Be sure to consider the various social inequality indicators: race, ethnicity, class, gender, and perhaps sexuality for some areas.
  • Indicate if there are policies, practices, or specific circumstances that have created and maintained these patterns.

Here are some examples of aspects to consider: Historically, has there always been racial segregation or not? Was it traditionally an area of immigration from a certain ethnic region? Is there an LGBT community? Was it an industrial area that had a strong working class community, or is it a technology area with highly educated citizens? Have there been efforts to desegregate or plans in the future?

  • In Chapter 1 and throughout the text, you have explored several sociological theoretical perspectives. Indicate which theoretical perspective best presents your analysis of your locality. Describe why you have chosen this theoretical perspective and ensure you include detail on which theorist’s work is most representative.

The Research Paper:

  • Must be seven to nine double-spaced pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted
  • Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.
  • Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
  • Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.
  • Must use at least five scholarly resources, including a minimum of two from the Ashford University Library.
  • Must document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a separate reference page

Philosophy

one to two paragraphs, I don’t need a cover page just include reference though APA format.

(1)What is the difference between critical reasoning and faith?   Please look at the issues surrounding Galileo and his observations that the sun circles the earth and the earth does not move. Church authority claimed that both of these observations were true and their truth was established not only by the Bible but also by the science of Aristotle.

It is this discussion that created what we now understand as the crisis between religion and science. Please do some research on this discussion and issue.  This is the fundamental issue that created our division between science and religion.

Are there claims about which it is impossible to reason critically?

(2)How do you use arguments every day? Provide at least two examples in the last year in which you have used critical reasoning in an argument.  Please look at both induction and deduction. Work on providing an example from each.

In deduction, if the premises are true, this is called soundness, and the form is valid, the conclusion must be true.  Validity applies only to the form of the deductive argument and not whether the premises are true or false.  Thus, one can have a valid argument that is not sound.

In induction, one can have true premises and a false conclusion. This is because one is making a general conclusion based on specific observations.

Please look at both induction and deduction and I look forward to your examples.

(3) Case study:

Identify the main point and the supporting points of each argument:

  1. Throughout history, people have disagreed about moral issues.  This isn’t true about science, because science is objective, and people can come to objective agreements.  If morality is not like science, and science is objective, morality must be subjective.  Morality, then, is just a matter of opinion.

Main point:

Supporting points:

  1. We should help people that are starving in other countries.  We have plenty of things that we can share without adversely affecting our own lives, and we are morally obligated to help people who are less fortunate than us if we can do so without giving up anything of comparable importance to the aid that we are giving.

Main point:

Supporting points:

Identify the premises and conclusion in the following arguments:

  1. Since large corporations make more money than small businesses, we should tax them at a higher rate than we tax small businesses.  This is because everyone should contribute to society according to his ability.

Premises:

Conclusion:

  1. Some people use handguns in self-defense.  Preventing someone from defending herself by taking away her weapon is the same as helping the attacker.  Bans on handguns are therefore the same as giving aid to the attackers.  Since giving aid to the attackers is wrong, we should not ban handguns.

Premises:

Conclusion:

Identify the premises and conclusion in the following arguments.  Then put the arguments into standard form.

  1. Bill is going to be able to tell the difference between disagreement and critical reasoning.  He is going to read the lecture, and anyone who reads the lecture is going to be able to tell the difference between disagreement and critical reasoning.
  2. Students will not become interested in learning for its own sake.  Universities will become more vocationally oriented.  Either students will become more interested in learning for its own sake or universities will become more vocationally oriented.

Premises:

Conclusion:

Sociological Meanings Of Basic Concepts-Reply To Two Comments

Two replies or critical comments to other students’ postings. These replies should have a minimum of 150 words each. Read each student posting and provide a critical comment for each one.

Student 1

A sociologist’s point of view on race states that it’s a social construction, because of people in society connecting physical traits and physical differences amongst people. People assume a certain perspective of someone, based on their skin tone, features, air and make assumptions about their background and religion. The movie ” Is Race Real” reflects on the topic of “hierarchy”. “Hierarchy is a system in which people or groups are ranked one above the other, according to dictionary.com. The example of the hierarchy being used in this movie is stating how some people believe “one racial kind is better than other racial kinds”. The cause of hierarchy causes the conflict between races, leading to violence. The man mentions the fact that racism causes the violence, and history repeats itself. Something tragic would happen, disappear, and appear again. In the movie ” Racism: What to do”? focuses on young kids and their opinions on certain subjects that have to do with “racism”. A girl mentions the fact of her little brother playing in the park with another boy, of a different race and the boy’s mother picked him up and gave the girl’s little brother a dirty look. Another girl mentions the fact that a boy and his family looks different from her and her family but she didn’t care and that was still her friend. While another girl mentioned that she doesn’t have a problem with interracial marriage and that she think her parents wouldn’t mind if she had dated someone of another race and religion. But she feels if she were to marry them, her parents wouldn’t be happiest. After watching both films, I had many observations and perspectives about each. For the movie ” Is Race Real”? my observation was that this film focuses on African American men, who were speaking and defending African American people, especially the men. It focused on the fact, racism does indeed exist then and it does now. My perspective after watching the film was that the men didn’t necessarily talk about the concept of slavery, but I believe the concept of slavery was the main focus because it showed videos of black men getting arrested and beaten. Also, it stated how history is repeating itself when it comes to racism amongst African Americans especially. For the film “Racism, What to Do?” , my observations were that it focused on a child’s point of view, there were only young girls speaking on their opinions about racism, and a majority of them were white. After watching the film, and hearing the young girl’s opinions, I came to the conclusion that majority of the time, it isn’t the child’s fault of how they think and act towards other children or people in general, that is a different race from them. It is usually their parents or family fault, because of how they told/ taught them how to think and act towards people of different races. I also kept in mind that there are some children that look pass the racial difference, and learn to act and think of others with a different race, no matter how they were raised. I noticed that because one of the girls in the video mentioned that she noticed her friend was a different color from her and her family, but it didn’t matter to her. As for the articles,”Growing Up, Growing Apart it focuses on three young girls who are different races and have a different religion, but see past that and be close friends. Although these young girls looked past their racial differences, others didn’t feel the same way. One of the girls had a party and invited people of different races that didn’t socialize with each other. ” Johanna had invited all her friends. white and black. But the mixing didn’t go as she wished. The black kids stayed down in the basement and danced and the white kids went outside on the stoop and talked”. (Lewin, PG1). As for the other article “Best of Friends, Worlds Apart” this article has a similarity that quickly turns into a difference compared to the other article “Growing Up, Growing Apart”. This article focuses on two men. Joel Ruiz who is black and Achmed Valdez who is white. They were best friends who always loved playing soccer together and as they get older things changed. Both of them eventually adapt to their own race and began to discriminate in racial differences. Ruiz surrounds himself in black-owned business, people, and women. He also made the comment that “White barbers don’t understand black hair”. As for Valdes, he surrounds himself in all-white neighborhoods, hang out with white Cubans and he doesn’t go to black neighborhoods unless his job requires him to. My perspective from both films and articles is that some people look past racial differences and see a person from deep within and some people just look at a person’s racial difference and doesn;t want to know them for the inside instead of the outside, and only make assumptions on which leads to racism .

Student 2

In the short film “Racism: What to do?”, it’s has kids of different races and backgrounds that gives their insight to some questions that were asked to them. The film expresses that race is thought based on how people react to each other. One girl mentioned that her brother was playing with a Hasidic Jewish kid in a park and the mother of the Jewish kid came and  grabbed him away from playing with her brother. As stated in chapter one of the textbook religion is not something that is biologically instilled in us as humans it is something that is thought, the mother of the Hasidic Jewish background just showed her son a lesson that playing with others that are not of the same cultural background or not similar to him he should not play or be among them. The other child that was their although he might have been a pasty of what is considered the dominant group he also knows not to accept or play with others now because of what that mothers actions. Also in chapter one it’s stated that members of the dominant is unwilling to marry outside of their group, as stated by another young lady in this film “ her parents wouldn’t mind if she dated outside of her race however she knows that her parents wouldn’t be happy if she married someone that is not of the same race”. As shown in the textbook as well many people might not verbally state that they are against the other race but something her parents did makes her know that it wouldn’t be approved by them to marry out of her racial group. I believe that race is something that people pick up from other people, family, and friends and it can be controlled based on how much it is enforced by the people around you. One of the other students has a friend that she is aware that their family looks different and is different from her family but that does not bother her that individual is her friend no matter what is the difference between them. This film showed different kids with different points of views based on how they were raised and what they were thought weather by family or outside people.

Race: The Power of an Illusion episode one, this film enforces that race is not a biological thing it is something that is socially developed. Based on the many Anthropologists that was featured in this film  there is nothing shown in our DNA that makes us significantly different from another person. When the students in the science class tested their DNA and told us that they think their DNA would be more similar to the person who they shared the same skin color with or who they had some similar features like hair and eyes. When the test was complete one student which was white his DNA matched someone in Iceland and someone in Africa. Although this same white male who had a DNA similarity to someone in Africa he was asked if he would change his skin color, his reply was no. He wouldn’t change his skin color because he feels that it is a privilege to have his skin color. The privilege that he refers to is known as “White Privilege” as described in chapter two page 66, white privilege are rights and immunities that you are given just because you are white. One privilege that they are granted which is shown when going into certain department stores or restaurants is that they are always financially reliable when using checks, credit cards, and cash. Also started in this film is that there is no gene that makes someone better at something than another person, if there was a gene it would consists of multiple other genes that can influence this trait and scientists have yet to come across that discovery. Not only do they think that a gene is involved if an African American is achieving at a sport as stated by the white male he thinks that the black males can beat home because they are bigger than him. Jesse Owens was a famous black track athlete who was thought to be only a successful because he was closer to the primitive, the primitive being a monkey. In both these films along with the text but you see that race is socially developed and racism can set people back from achieving things that might be more common in another group of achievement. However if the opportunity is given to people of different races and they set they mind to it I believe that anyone of any race can achieve and activity weather dominant in one group or not.

In the article “Best Friends Worlds Apart” by Mirta Ojito, raises the question how can these people be best friends but are living in two different worlds?. You have two Cuban men in this article that grew up together in Cuba the only thing different about them was that one was of darker skin being considered black and one of lighter skin being considered white. While in Cuba they had no racial difference that would’ve segregated them in Cuba being that everyone was just considered a Cuban. After their migration to Miami Florida that’s where they both noticed that they are different from each other. Being that Ruiz was Cuban he was black and when arrived to Miami he was treated like a black male of America, he was placed to live in what we know as the ghetto and was underprivileged.  Valdes who was Cuban as well however was white was not underprivileged and lived like a white person does in America, he had access to many things and was given greater opportunity than his friend. They both went through the same process to come to America but was treated and granted different things when arrived. In chapter 2 table 1.2 Miami/ Miami Beach was 73% segregation of blacks and whites. Did the move to America change the way each other viewed them self and each other? Yes, Ruiz adapted to his limited opportunities and became accustom to what he was now considered a black man he his his Cuban culture and adapted a fully black culture. Valdes adapted to his opportunities that were granted to him and also looked at his friend as a black person now. Being stereotyped can set limits upon someone and deprive them of equal opportunities.

Is it really a racial segregation or just kids leaning more to the people that they share more in common with? In this article “Growing up, Growing apart” by Tamar Lewin, it’s about a group of kids going to a multiracial school that they are friends with many kids of different races. As time goes by the same kids that used to hang out with each other begin to hang out with kids that share more in common with them and some happen to be kids that share the same racial background as them. Making racial comments like your acting white or acting black this is where I believe it becomes a racial stereotypical segregation among these kids, it should not be this way people should be able to hang out with who they want to and not be judged.

The world we live in consists of many people from different racial backgrounds, people should not be put in groups or categorized based on physical characteristics. As seen in the videos and articles it has happened and although proven by many scientists that we are not different. People of these many different races and hit with racism, stereotyped, and the segregated. We are all human and if we are being treated differently it should be based on what we do as a individual.
