LASA 1: Protecting Children From Media

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Protecting Children From Media

(LASA 1: Protecting Children From Media)

For his 10th birthday, Greg was given a handheld videogame system. His parents allowed him to pick any two games. They knew the games might contain violence, because there was a violence rating sign posted on the games, but rationalized that they were only games and other kids play them. Greg would quickly finish dinner and run up to his room to play his games.

His parents were pleased to observe that Greg enjoyed their present so much. After a week, his parents noticed that he wasn’t turning off the videogames at bedtime, and had begun turning homework in late. He was up so late playing that he would not get up for school without argument. His parents decided that enough was enough and took the video games away. Greg threw temper tantrums and persuaded his parents to buy him a computer after convincing them that it was necessary to keep up at school. Greg soon returned to the same pattern of behavior where he spent long hours and late nights at the computer. This time, his parents felt a false sense of security that he was doing his homework. One day, his curious parents decided to scan the computer history to see what Web sites Greg was browsing. To their horror, they discovered that Greg was spending many hours online playing interactive, sometimes violently graphic, games on the Internet. He was also chatting with other “gamers”. Before confronting Greg about his behavior, his mother and father agreed to investigate what types of intervention strategies might be available within their community. They have come to you, a behavioral consultant, for advice.

Click to Read the Kaiser Family Foundation Study: Generation M2. Media in the Lives of 8- to 18- Year Olds.

Describe the issue of exposure to videogame violence in today’s society as related to Greg’s situation. Explore issues such as:

  1. Prevalence (e.g., age, gender, racial diversity, etc.)
  2. Given Greg’s developmental level, what are possible dangers of exposure to media violence? Be sure to address this in the context of his cognitive and socioemotional development.
  3. Risk and protective factors, including predisposition to violence (e.g., are all children who play violent videogames likely to become more aggressive? What protective factors might mitigate the possible outcomes for Greg?
  4. Discuss the possible outcomes if Greg’s behavior continues unchecked.
  5. Discuss types of intervention strategies you would expect his parents to find at a community level, such as in community centers, schools, and social service agencies, to assist children like Greg who are at risk due to ongoing exposure to media violence.
  6. What would be a good plan to recommend to Greg’s parents?
  7. Compare the dangers of exposure to videogame violence with other forms of violence. What are similarities and differences between videogame violence exposure and the other type of violence you chose to compare?
  8. What are the costs of videogame violence to the family and the community and society at large and the other form of violence you chose for comparison?

By Wednesday, July 26, 2017, format your paper in APA (6th edition) style, using information you learned in your textbook and from the Kaiser Family Foundation Study to support your response.  Your paper should be between 4 and 5 pages in length. Include a cover page, abstract, and reference list, which should cite any information used from your assigned textbook, Kaiser Family Foundation reference, and other sources such as online course content.

The Prisoner’s Dilemma

Negotiating Self-Interest: The Prisoner’s Dilemma

(Balancing Self-Interest: Ethical Dilemmas)

(The Prisoner’s Dilemma)

The Prisoner’s Dilemma; What is in My Best Interest?

We learned in earlier discussions that according to Aristotle and Bentham, one’s happiness was the highest goal. Enter social contract. How does one ensure one’s self-interest when one has to compromise with another to achieve the goal? David Gauthier proposes that it is possible, offering the Prisoner’s Dilemma as an example.

According to the story of the Prisoner’s Dilemma, two people have been brought in for questioning, conducted separately, about a crime they are suspected to have committed. The police have solid evidence of a lesser crime that they committed, but need confessions in order to convict them on more serious charges. Each prisoner is told that if she cooperates with the police by informing on the other prisoner, then she will be rewarded by receiving a relatively light sentence of one year in prison, whereas her cohort will go to prison for ten years. If they both remain silent, then there will be no such rewards, and they can each expect to receive moderate sentences of two years. And if they both cooperate with police by informing on each other, then the police will have enough to send each to prison for five years. The dilemma then is this: in order to serve her own interests as well as possible, each prisoner reasons that no matter what the other does she is better off cooperating with the police by confessing. Each reasons: “If she confesses, then I should confess, thereby being sentenced to five years instead of ten. And if she does not confess, then I should confess, thereby being sentenced to one year instead of two. So, no matter what she does, I should confess.” The problem is that when each reasons this way, they each confess, and each goes to prison for five years. However, had they each remained silent, thereby cooperating with each other rather than with the police, they would have spent only two years in prison.

(Note: For additional information, you can read more about Gauthier by copying the URL into your internet browser. (http://www.iep.utm.edu/soc-cont/#SH2a). It will take you to the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. The link takes you to the beginning of a great article on social contract. The outline at the beginning shows that the discussion on Gauthier and the Prisoner’s Dilemma is in the middle of the article, in the “More Recent Theories” section, following Rawls. Gauthier comments on the idea that the Prisoner’s Dilemma shows that it is in an individual’s best interest to cooperate, even when it means that they will give up some individual freedom.)

Assignment Requirements:

Write a 3-page (650-750 word) paper addressing the following questions:

  1. Consider the concepts of utilitarianism, egoism, and social contract. What moral theory—utilitarianism, egoism, or social contract—is consistent with coopering with the other prisoner and rejecting self-interest as the best option? What is the recommended course of action for each prisoner in regard to the other two theories?
  2. From your experience, is cooperation always in your best interest? Share an example. Alternatively, to state it negatively, why do selfish, self-centered people seem to prosper if cooperation is always in their best interest?

All written assignments and responses should follow citation rules for attributing sources. Please use Microsoft Word spelling/grammar checker before submitting your paper. Please remember that the plagiarism policy applies.

Perception Of Gender

Perception Of Gender

(Perception Of Gender)

I need this assignment completed by 10/11/17 12:00 pm aka 12 noon New York eastern time. Thank you

Gender, as a term and a social concept, has taken many different forms and meanings over time. Your personal experience and expression of gender may be reflective of your generation and the sociopolitical landscape during the influential development stages of your life.

This assignment will allow you to expand your knowledge base and support your acquisition of various expressions and experiences related to gender.

Select a person from a different generation than yourself. Schedule a thirty-minute interview with that person.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the evolution of the concept of gender over generations. Select at least two scholarly, peer-reviewed resources for use in this assignment.

During the interview, ask the following questions:

  • What does the term gender mean to you? How does it differ from sex?
  • How has gender played a part in the understanding of your role and responsibilities at home and at work?
  • How was gender conceived of when you were a teenager and what differences do you see in today’s youth regarding gender roles?
  • How was gender discussed in your household when growing up? If you have children, how have you communicated gender to them?
  • In your estimation, what has been the greatest accomplishment for your gender in achieving equality or equal footing regarding career and family advancement?

During your interview, be aware that the person’s responses could be reactions to the advancements of the opposite gender and the impact he or she experienced. An example would be men’s experiences of child rearing as more mothers enter and excel in corporate environments.

Complete the following:

  • Analyze the person’s ability to communicate about gender issues and the role gender has played in his or her life as a member of society.
  • Compare and contrast the person’s views on gender with those of your generation. Explain the reasons for the differences.
  • Integrate the interview responses throughout your narrative as necessary by summarizing them and utilizing quotes.

In your analysis, be sure to integrate ideas and concepts from your independent research as well as the module readings with your findings from the interview.

Write a 3-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to the formatting of your paper and the citation of sources. Remember to include a cover page and reference page in APA format. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.

Suicide and euthanasia Comment

Suicide and euthanasia Comment

(Suicide and euthanasia Comment)

Comment1

Suicide and euthanasia are extremely sensitive topics for the majority of individuals including health care workers. According to the Christian belief, it is considered a sinful act and therefore goes against Christian beliefs. Meilaender (2013) states that “Christians have held that suicide is morally wrong because they have seen it in a contradiction of our nature as creatures, an unwillingness to receive life moment by moment from the hand of God without ever regarding it as simply “our” possession” (Meilaender, 2013). He goes on to say that our life is not something we own and that by committing suicide we are essentially playing the role of creator. We need to remember that life is a gift from God and to take one’s own life is a selfish act and disrespectful to God for the gift of life he gave to us.

Suicide and euthanasia are controversial topics. I don’t whole heartedly agree with Meilaender. I believe that if a patient has a chronic illness that is causing them to have a very poor quality of life and/or chronic pain, then that person should be allowed to decide if they want to carry on with life living that way. What a bleak existence it would be. My husband and I have had numerous discussions about this very topic. We both agree that if either one of us were extremely ill, we should find a way to put that person out of their misery. On the flip side, if a healthy person were to take their own life, then I totally agree with Meilaender and that person is selfish and not following in the footsteps of God.

Comment2

Based on Meilaender’s (2013) perspective of suicide, it is morally wrong because there is an unwillingness to receive the life given, by our creator, moment by moment.  Suicide
is not God’s will, it is the irrational desire of a man to be in control and a repercussion of sin with man acting as the creator, instead of the created.  Meilanender (2013) contends that life is not “our” possession, nor ours to take whether by suicide or euthanasia.  I appreciate his comparison of our lives to being characters in a story that God created while God gives us the freedom to act according to the nature he provided.  However, I don’t believe that it was ever God’s intent to allow us the freedom to rationally take a life by suicide.

Capstone Continuation..

Capstone Continuation

(Capstone Continuation )

Question description

You are required to write a capstone paper for this course. A capstone paper is exactly what it sounds like. It is a paper that will encapsulate all that you have learned as a Criminal Justice major.

This paper must be a minimum of 25 pages in length: NO EXCEPTION! Papers can be longer, but if you are approaching the 30-page mark, then you need to narrow the scope of your paper. The paper must be typed, double spaced in 12-point font. A title page with your name on it must be included. An abstract and a full reference page must also be provided in your paper. This paper must adhere to APA format, including citations. An example of this format will be provided to you in class.

This is the continuation to the paper you began and just the continuation to a lot more time to finish the paper.

from the professor who graded online writing center:

Add in-text citations – the most important revisions still needed are including in-text citations in every sentence that uses information/facts from a scholarly source (i.e. article, website or book, etc). Even when paraphrasing information, it is necessary to cite the source with an in-text citation at the end of the sentence. While reading your paper it was not clear if at times you were paraphrasing information and not including in-text citations to explain where you found that information. This website explains how to format APA in-text citations: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/02/

This video explains how to properly insert APA in-text citations in your essay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLlLIYxeGls

Page numbers for APA in-text citations – there are relevant and insightful direct quotes integrated throughout your body paragraphs. According to APA guidelines, when using a direct quote it is necessary to include the page number or paragraph number in the in-text citation. Most of your in-text citations did not include this information. See this website to gain further clarity about APA in-text citations:(Capstone Continuation )

https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/02/

Semicolon & Colon Grammar Rules – often in the paper a semicolon was used, when instead the correct punctuation was a colon. When introducing a list of items or concepts, it is best to use a colon. Watch these videos to understand the grammar rules for colon & semicolon usage.

Colon Grammar Rules – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9K0dnA2K4Y

Semicolon Grammar Rules – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kssP4fWs9U

Add a ‘Summary’ section at the end of your research paper – to conclude the research paper and tie up all loose ends, I suggest adding a summary section at the end. Most research papers include a summary section as the conclusion. In this section you can reiterate the purpose of the paper and assert any closing thoughts for the reader to remember about your research.

Research Designs – 11

Research Designs – 11

Question description (Research Designs – 11)

Analyze the differences and merits of the phenomenological proposed studies presented Below . Which design do you think would answer the question better? Explain your rationale in the response

  • Develop a brief study description (no more than three paragraphs) using a phenomenological design to answer the question: How do nursing students cope with stress? Include a brief discussion of how trustworthiness, confirmability, credibility, and consistency would be assured.

Stress is the body’s reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses. Stress is a normal part of life and you can experience stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts (Cleveland Clinic 2018). Even positive life changes such as a promotion, a new home, or the birth of a child produce stress. The human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. It can be positive, keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger, or it can be negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between stressors. As a result, the person becomes overworked, and stress-related tension builds. The stress response, also known as the “fight or flight response”, is activated in case of an emergency. However, this response can become chronically activated during prolonged periods of stress. Prolonged activation of the stress response can cause both physical and emotional wear and tear on the body (Cleveland Clinic 2018). (Research Designs – 11)

When nursing students practice health care, both in practice laboratory and in their experiences with patients, they may experience both positive and negative forms of stress (Radames, et. al, 2018). How they perceive stress is as important as how they cope with it. A phenomenological study designed to answer the question: How do nursing students cope with stress? seeks to gain knowledge and develop an understanding of the various causes of stress and how the nursing students manage it. This method consists of interviewing both current and former nursing students to gain various perspectives on factors that cause stress and how they perceive them at the different stages of their nursing studies. Other data such as age, gender, lifestyle, and socio-economic factors can also help to paint a broad picture of identifying stressors. Obtaining a broad depth of perspective and experiences is essential to understanding the various coping mechanisms and methods used to alleviate stress by the students.

Trustworthiness, confirmability, credibility and consistency can be assured through the use of consistent interview methods and data collection. Accurate, extensive documentation and the use of interview responses can ensure the absence of any bias on the research findings. The subject of stress on nursing students is not new to the research field and findings can be used in future research. (Research Designs – 11)
