Small Group Communication

PART A

This is a Collaborative Learning Community assignment

A group of seven individuals embarked on a weeklong cruise aboard a chartered luxury yacht. On the third day, a severe storm caused the yacht to run aground on a deserted island. Aside from minor scratches and bruises, all crew and passengers escaped serious injury. Unfortunately, the yacht was damaged beyond repair. Furthermore, the yacht’s only radio was damaged. It can receive messages but can no longer transmit messages. After several days, they hear over the radio that the effort to locate and rescue them had been abandoned. The group is presumed dead. The island is uninhabited. There is sufficient vegetation and fresh water to sustain them indefinitely. Despite the outside world’s assumption that they are dead, the group has resolved to find a way to return home. In the meantime, they must prepare for a life together on the island.

Use the file titled “Selecting a Leader” to complete the following:

1. Individually rank the applicants and report your ranking to the group with one to four sentences explaining how you determined your ranking.

2. As a group, come to consensus as to a ranking of the applicants using one to four sentences for each applicant. Be sure to present your reasoning based on criteria established by the group.

Select one member of the CLC to submit your paper.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the GCU Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.

Essay Social Stratification

Attached are instructions along with chapter 4 and for the journal.
Thank you
Write your own personal thoughts about the following questions:
1. If you could remake the United States and/or the world in any way you wanted to do so, what would the social stratification system look like?  In other words, outline what you believe to be the key principles or the rules of the game by which rewards should be allocated?    Keep in mind that rewards could include power, status or prestige, and/or material resources such as money, land, water, or any of the things that money can buy.   Not all kinds of rewards need be allocated according to the same principles.      This first question is essentially about how you think about how things should be in an ideal world.
2. If you were to characterize the social stratification system as it currently exists in the United States and/or the world, how well does it measure up to the ideal world you defined in question 1?  In other words, by what principles or rules of the game do you believe that rewards are currently allocated?    This question is essentially about how you think things are, regardless of whether or not you think they should be that way.   What, if anything, about the current system of social stratification do you find to be unfair or problematic in some way?   What, if anything, about the current stratification system do you think should remain the same?
Write a minimum of 800 words.

Based On The Data, You Determine That You Must Design A Behavioral Intervention For Kaya And Determine If It Is Successful. As You Begin The Process Of Investigating Your Research Question:

Assignment: Conducting Time-Series Research

Traditional experimental research dictates that there must be one or more experimental groups (groups receiving a treatment or intervention) and a control group (which does not receive the intervention). Participants are assigned randomly to the experimental and control groups. Although experimental designs may be preferable to other designs, even in action research, they are not always feasible for practitioners for many reasons. There may be ethical issues regarding withholding an intervention from a client group; or time, financial, or logistical constraints may make it impossible to include random assignment into groups.   In such cases, the use of time-series research can provide a meaningful alternative to true experimental research. Time-series designs are quasi-experimental, meaning that they still seek to evaluate the impact of a treatment or intervention on a target group (or individual) but do not include random assignment to treatment and control groups. Researchers still have control over admittance criteria to the treatment group (e.g., mothers under the age of 21). Times series then allows researchers to take measurements of treatment effectiveness at various intervals over time. Taken together, these data points provide information about the intervention under consideration.

In this Assignment, you apply time-series research techniques to a case study.   To Prepare  Imagine that you are a human and social services professional working with a child, Kaya, who is having some behavioral problems at her elementary school. As a scholar practitioner, you approach your work with her from an empirical standpoint and want to measure the effectiveness of your recommended services. To date, you have provided information about resources to the family and coordinated services for the child and family.  As such, you pose the following research question: “What impact do the services the child is currently receiving have on reducing off-task behavior, physical aggression, and verbal aggression for the identified child?”  For the purposes of this research, the target behaviors are as follows: 1.Off-task: failure to maintain eye contact with task at hand for more than 3 consecutive seconds 2.Physical Aggression: hitting/pushing/kicking peers/teachers, throwing objects 3.Verbal Aggression: threatening, yelling  Consider the following observation report:  During the first observation period, which was conducted on Monday (in math class) between 11:20 and 11:30, 10-minute, 10-second, partial interval recording was used to assess the frequency of off-task behaviors, physical aggression, and verbal aggression. Kaya was observed to be off-task during 12% of the intervals observed, engaged in physical aggression 0% of the intervals observed, and engaged in verbal aggression 2% of the intervals observed.  During the second observation (during recess), which was conducted on Wednesday from 9:00 to 9:30, Kaya was observed to be off-task during 15% of the intervals observed, engaged in physical aggression 20% of the intervals observed, and engaged in verbal aggression 3% of the intervals observed.  Kaya was also observed on Friday from 10:30 to 10:40 during a group activity. Kaya was observed to be off-task during 20% of the intervals observed, was observed to engage in physical aggression 7% of the intervals observed, and was observed to engage in verbal aggression 10% of the intervals observed.   Off-task   Physical Aggression   Verbal Aggression    12%   0%   2%    15%   20%   3%    20%   7%   10%

The Assignment (1–2 pages)  Based on the data, you determine that you must design a behavioral intervention for Kaya and determine if it is successful. As you begin the process of investigating your research question: •Briefly describe a time-series design that you would use to investigate the impact of your intervention, and explain how you would collect and record the additional data. Be specific.  •Select a method for graphically representing the provided data. Use the method to create a graph. (You can use Microsoft Excel or Word).  •Analyze the data and provide a narrative description of your analysis

Analyze A Piece Of Music

Analyze a Piece of Music   The principles of unity and variety apply to all music, regardless of compositional style or historical period.  Now that you are familiar with the concepts in the first section of the course (Basic Musical Concepts), and you have seen how they work on different pieces of music, try your hand, mouse, and ears at how they operate in a music selection that you may not have heard yet:  “Manha de Carnaval” by Sigman and Bonfa.

Your analysis should include:

•The number of different musical ideas in the piece (for example, can we say that there are two ideas A and B? Or is there only one?).

•The timings (start and stop times) of the different sections of the piece. (Hint: Listen for changes in musical ideas and timbre, for example, points when different instruments come in or give way to others.).

•How unity and variety are exemplified in those sections through the use of: 1.Dynamics.

2.Timbre.

3.Pitch. .

•Although there are sections that feature one instrument over others, whether you think this is a piece for a solo performer or for an ensemble..

•A list of the characteristics of the musical style closest to the one this piece exemplifies. (Hint: Look at the last lecture in the first section of the course). •Whether you think this piece serves (or could serve) a specific purpose.. •Whether or not it has any specific connotation(s) for you..

Discussion

Discussion: Cognitive Behavioral Orientation: Case Conceptualization

For this Discussion, you will write a case conceptualization as though you were a cognitive behavioral counselor. Continue to refer to and incorporate previous Instructor feedback as you examine these cases.

As you review this week’s Learning Resources and media files, note techniques and interventions, and consider the role of a cognitive behavioral counselor in planning treatment. Further, reflect on cognitive behavioral therapy with respect to developing your own theoretical orientation. In what ways do you find that cognitive behavioral therapy may resonate with your own point of view?

Note: For this Discussion, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleagues’ postings. Begin by clicking on the Post to Discussion Question link, and then select Create Thread to complete your initial post. Remember, once you click on Submit, you cannot delete or edit your own posts—and cannot post anonymously. Please check your post carefully before clicking on Submit!

To Prepare:

  • Review this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Review the Psychoanalytic Case Conceptualization Example found in this week’s Learning Resources and use this document to prepare your initial Discussion post.
  • Select one of the four case studies presented in this week’s Learning Resources and answer the following points as if you were using a cognitive behavioral, rational emotive behavioral, or reality therapy approach. Use your Learning Resources and the notes you took from the videos to support your conceptualization and integrate examples to support your post. Include the following:
    • Presenting Problem
    • Treatment Goals
    • Identification and explanation of at least two techniques and interventions from your chosen theory (i.e., cognitive behavioral or reality therapy)
    • Expected Outcome
By Day 3

Post your cognitive behavioral, rational emotive behavioral or reality therapy conceptualization.

Be sure to support your main post with specific references to the Learning Resources using proper APA format and citations. Your response posts may be more conversational and less formal.

Read your colleagues’ postings.

Thinking And Doing Ethics PHI-210RS-OL05 (MOD 1)

Module 1

2 Parts:

(Note: In responding to your classmates posts, respond to both Parts I and II of their initial posts.)

Part I

The information that you will need for the first part of the discussion can be found in Case 6J, p. 76; Case 8, p. 140; and Case 5, p. 46 of Thinking Critically About Ethical Issues. For two of those cases (you pick), clearly identify what you take to be the parties and the moral issue(s) that are at stake in those cases.

Part II

In the very beginning of one of your textbooks book, Vincent Ruggiero responds to the question “Why do we need ethics if we have laws?” (Ruggiero 4) in a rather striking way by claiming, in effect, that ethics is required by the law because it underpins and informs our laws in some way. At one point Ruggiero goes so far as to assert that, “…law is not possible without ethics. The only way for a law to be enacted or repealed is for one or more people to make a decision about right and wrong” (Ruggiero 4). Ruggiero attempts to back up this claim by providing some examples that he sees as providing some clear evidence for his position, one concerns the creation of a law against sexual harassment and another concerns the repeal of the law of Prohibition. In this vein he writes, “The only rational basis for a law against sexual harassment is that the act is wrong” and he adds further, “The Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution made Prohibition the law of the land—until the Twenty-first Amendment repealed it in the name of justice” (Ruggiero 4, italics are mine).

My question for you then, is “Do you agree with Ruggiero’s assessment of the intimate relationship between ethics and the law?” I intend this question in a general sense, but especially in regards the two examples he gives concerning the laws against sexual harassment and Prohibition. That is, can you think of any other (non-ethical) explanations for why we (now/no longer) have these particular laws? If so, what would those reasons be if not “ethical” ones? And furthermore, what might that mean for Ruggiero’s initial characterization of the relationship between ethics and the law in general?

JOURNAL

Formative Guidelines and Rubric5.html

Overview

There are many tools to evaluate implicit biases, such as surveys and tests. The most popular is the Implicit Association Test, or IAT, which measures association between concepts and evaluations or stereotypes. This test, which was created by Anthony Greenwald and his colleagues, is an online test that is available to the public through Harvard University and has several adaptations, including a Gender-Career IAT, Disability IAT, Age IAT, and others. Although you are not required to complete the IAT for this assignment, feel free to explore the tests and their descriptions.

For this assignment, you will be completing a “Comfort in Social Situations” survey and reflecting on your results. The results of this survey may help identify any implicit biases you may have and how they may impact your communication in the criminal justice field.

Prompt

For this journal assignment, visit the Breaking the Prejudice Habit website and click on “Comfort in Social Situations (College Student Version)” at the bottom of the page. Complete the worksheet. You do not need to share your results or hand in this worksheet; this is for your personal reflection only.

Once you receive your results, reflect on them. Were you surprised at the results, or were they what you had expected? What factors or experiences may have contributed to how you responded to the scenarios? Compare your results to your journal response from Module One. Do your results align with the personal factors from Loden’s Wheel that you identified in that journal assignment? Next, identify any implicit biases that you may have, based on your survey results, and any known explicit biases. Lastly, explain how your results, along with any implicit and explicit biases you may have, may impact your communication in the criminal justice field.

Specifically, the following rubric criteria must be addressed:

  1. Reflect on your “Comfort in Social Situations” survey results.
  2. Compare those results to the personal factors from Loden’s Wheel.
  3. Identify any implicit or explicit biases.
  4. Explain how the survey results and your biases may impact communication in the criminal justice field.

Guidelines for Submission

This assignment must be 200–350 words in length. Any references should be cited in APA format. Consult the Shapiro Library APA Style Guide for more information on citations.

Note: For this journal assignment, you can receive a Proficient, Needs Improvement, or Not Evident score on each of your rubric criteria. There is no Exemplary score for this assignment.
