data mining and link analysis

Data mining and link analysis are two of the most important tools utilized by the counter-terrorism analyst. In simplest terms, data mining is finding the information and link analysis is tying the information together. In the real world, this is not always easy given the vast amount of information available and the uncertainty that any linkages actually exist to be uncovered.

Assignment:

Write a 2 to 4 page (maximum 1,000 words) paper on what links, if any, exist between four “terrorist groups.”

For information on these groups, go to the Internet Movie Database website (www.imdb.com) and search for the following movies:

  • The Matrix (1999)
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
  • Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  • Rocky (1976)

For each movie, scroll to the bottom of the cast list and click “More” in order to receive the complete list of cast members, directors, writers, and producers (called “Full Cast and Crew” under the “Overview” section).

For this exercise, each movie is a separate “terrorist group.”

  • The director(s) is the leader of the terrorist group.
  • The writer(s) is the spokesperson.
  • The producer(s) is the financier.
  • The cast members are the terrorists (but do not use any cast members listed as “uncredited,” “extended edition,” or “voice”).

For the members of the terrorist group, use their true name as their true name in your analysis and the names of any characters they have played as their alias(es).

Stick to the limits of the information requested above and do not go beyond those limits while trying to find linkages. For example:

  • Do not use information from other movies (including sequels/prequels).
  • Do not use information from the stories within the movies.
  • Do not use information from the original source material such as the books, comic books, or TV shows that inspired the movies.
  • Do not use information from the real world such as family or romantic relationships
