Week 1 – Discussion

No unread replies.No replies.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

 Learning and Cognition Perspectives

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please read “Cognition: Overview and Recent Trends” (pp. 3-8), “Neuroscience Bases of Learning” (pp. 9-15), and “Learning in a Cross-Cultural Perspective” (pp. 16-22) in your text.

Based on your resources this week, in an initial post of 450 to 600 words, explain how emotions and social learning are suggested to affect memory and thought processing. Apply skeptical inquiry to a brief discussion about how specific thinking styles may also be highly important to the learning process (Zhang & Sterberg, 2005, 2010). Explain the theoretical perspective of “wealth” as a predictor of academic success. Describe how the multifaceted complexities of “wealth” may affect performance and success. Apply the concept of “wealth” to your own past academic success. Do you personally capitalize on one particular definition of “wealth”? If so, how? Apply the Type I thinking style outlined in the Zhang and Sterberg (2010) “Learning in a Cross-Cultural Perspective” article to each of your responses.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleague’s posts and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies early each week to stimulate more meaningful and interactive discourse in your discussions.

How does your explanation of emotion and social learning differ from your peers’ explanations? Did your colleague address his or her personal application of “wealth” in a way that is similar or different than your own past experiences? Did your peer apply the Type I thinking style to his or her initial post? If not, pose questions that could encourage the application of this area of the discussion. Look for peers whose posts have not yet been responded to and reply to these so that everyone has a chance to reflect and develop their knowledge more fully. Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Day 7 of the week and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post. Peer responses may vary in length but should be detailed and thought provoking. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses.
